I love the way Slashdot gives a +3 "informative" rating for a statement that has no real citation or merit whatsoever but as long as MS, or Bill, is being bashed they figure it must be worthy. Here's a hint to both you and Slashdot. Providing a link to the history of a product where your argument is not proved, or even mentioned, is NOT informative.
Is it just me or does everyone realize that MS takes a pounding whichever way it turns. If they tighten security the get hammered. If they don't address security, or have current security issues, they get slammed
I think most people today are forgetting a fundamental rule. You must make tradeoffs on the scale of security vs. usability. If you want a more secure environment you must limit the amount of access that is allowed (user, app, process, etc.)MS is struggling a bit now to find that sweet spot. But, if one takes into account that security being treated as a major issue at MS for only about 3 years they've come a long way. Consider that fact that they had to go back to 9x, NT 4 and 2000 and address issues as well as ship a consumer OS (on an NT Kernel) and server OS at the same time is quite a feat in my book.
MS has drawn a line in the sand with the release of XP SP2. Going forward, most need to understand that the changes made in SP 2 are not to stifle the user. Instead, they are created to set a bar for future releases of third party software and set expectations on how to build their apps. Granted, it kinda sucks now that some apps won't work but I'd rather have that happen now and take the hit to have improved security in the future.
It's pathetic sometimes how moderator's biases at/. can shine through.
I'm making a legit point here.
Google's Web Definition for Troll: A purposely stupid, inflammatory, or downright wrong article.
A. This is not stupid or downright wrong, it's a fact that Apple, along with Microsoft, do this.
B. This is not inflammatory. Again, I'm simply stating a FACT of what's done. However, people may take it as the may.
I am NOT trying to Flame Apple in anyway but only stating FACT.
When someone bashes MS,/. moderators just then an "Insightful" or "Funny". But once someone stated a FACT that Kingdom of Apple of OSS does it...oh, that's not cool.
I'm not trying to incite a riot!
Slashdot is becoming a huge Communist Propaganda Machine.
If you sign-up for the free service, you'll have to agree to "INSTALL THE MSN MUSIC ASSISTANT"
I recall another company doing the same thing when you install their media playback software...I think their name is Apple. Yea, it's Apple.
It's not new that software makers do this. In the case of Apple, when you install QuickTime iTunes is dumped on your computer whether you like it or not.
I give MS credit for the Music Assistant because when you install it at least it's for a purpose to use the service. Not like Apple on the other hand where the app just sits there, whether you want it or not.
I agree for the most part.. However, MS,IMO, has done a lousy job in educating the genpop about it's secuity features.
Take SP2 for example. A lot of cool security work was done but more that half the people who use Windows have no idea to use the Firewall feature for example. Thus, if Joe Blow user does not know how to do anything he's open to attack. Now this data live on his PC, it makes it a jucy target. That's why MS is having to take the "Make it Idiot Proof" appoarch. Make a Freak'n tutorial, that helps!
I agree that bloat can be a big pain in the rear. However, lets take a look at the other side of the coin for a moment. If Microsoft did not "bloat" its software then the hardware industry, particularly Intel, would not have had an incentive to keep pushing their envelope, thus keeping hardware stagnate, processing power low and research capabilities limited.
Remember the days when a 4MB "upgrade" was ~$250. We'd still be in times similar to that. We have now hit a time when the hardware power has by far out ran software. This next decade is about building the best software to run on the hardware can handle it instead of in the 90's when it was the other way around.
The main difference is that these tools only search on filename etc. that are available with flat file systems. With WinFS you can search not only by file name but by the files properties (i.e. All Photos that "Jim" is in). It also indexes and stores items in relation to other items and acts just like a database exclusively for files.

As usual you people resort to personal insults, or at least attempt to, to try and mask your own insecurities and make yourself fell good about yourself. This is another great "elude and derail" tactic.
As for the REAL issue at hand, yes I do not try and elude the issue that Microsoft was found a monopoly. And yes, Bill Gate's testimony was a disaster. And yes, Microsoft did abuse its power in the past. However, in today's business climate that has come about after the Enron scandal, the WorldCom situation and Microsoft's Antitrust Trial a company would be foolish to attempt to sabotage, mislead or stifle ANY government body. They are so closely monitored by several government agencies that any attempts would be discovered. Attempts to abuse its power today are limited to nil. Any company who is considered a "victim" to Microsoft can now become a whistle blower and insight a government investigation. So why risk BILLIONS of dollars of monthly income just to "thumb their nose" at the EU or anyone else? Yea, it sounds really far fetched to me too! Coincidence theory? Nope, just a factual and common sense one.
So, to set the record straight:
Jimmy Hoffa is NOT buried in Redmond
Bill Gates was NOT the shooter on the grassy noel
And... NO, Microsoft DID NOT stage the Moon Landings
Nice try to side step my question which you still didn't answer! That's what's pathetic!
As soon as someone stumps you MS bashes you always side step and say "..but what about this and what about that" and ever hone up the question. You conspiracy theorists, my friend, are the ones who are truly pathetic and live in an altered state of reality with your own delusions.
If this was the case, then why wasn't MS brought up on contempt or falsifying evidence/statement charges?
You're watching the movie "Conspiracy Theory" and "Antitrust" a bit too much.
Just because video clips embedded into Microsoft Word documents don't run properly does not mean that Media player is sabotaged! Show me some proof a.k.a actual fact!
So if IE does not render a page properly it too is "sabotaged"?
Well hell, if the fan belt in my car breaks should I think Nissan sabotaged it.
These arguments just get further into Left Field as time goes on.
All users want seamless use. MS gives it. Then government bodies complain and make them strip things out and complain about the performance.
That's like having gum in your hair and then bitching about your fucked up hair cut that was needed to take the gum out!
When will this madness stop!?
Hmmm...well lets see.
The key word in your argument is SOMETIMES...yes sometimes. That is when the severity, attack surface and overall impact are low.
Patch creation process:
MS - Problem identified, severity determined dev work scheduled, dev work performed, interop testing done, dev work on interop issues, regression testing, patch rolled out
Open Source - Problem identified, Open Source Community whining, more whining, some more whining, unknown unemployed dev writes fix to shut whiners up, some testing done, patch rolled out with piss poor distribution method.

sorry to be redundant, but....
Nex up: COMDEX Bagdad!
Comes complete with a tour of "The Green Zone"
The old adage for Comdex amoung the various casino staff members went something like this:
"A Computer Nerd treats a $20 bill the same as his shirt...he never changes either of them."
Thank God almighty, I get tips at last!
Most people react just like Michael Bolten does...with a bat!
And no,he has no relation to that "No Talent Ass Clown"
.....Again! I lose my keys on a daily basis....I can imagine what I'd do with one of these
Making it a key chain would not help either...
"....damn...I need to upgrade my RJ-45 Jack...anyone have a 88Mhz proc that I could borrow?"
