My suggestion is get an NT box with all the Microsft hoo-haa, Notes, etc. but also have a *nix box, with Apache, perl, etc. whatever you *really* like to develop on. This way you get the best of both worlds, and above all - choice.
Well, the fact that many people have different opinions on the Palm devices should be an idicator that a variety of devices at a variety of levels is a Good Thing.
I can see the cheap Visor not having a cradle, some people who own Palms don't even use a desktop computer! Some of them never load a third-party app... It's an *organizer* for them, not a computer peripheral. How do you back it up? Well, that expansion module would work...
As for the Visor's form, like the Palm III, perhaps they wanted to leverage the third party products like cases, and the like...(?)
The coolest thing I see about the Visor is the expansion port - based off of what people have done with the HotSync port - this could be a biggie!
Also, I can see the 'competition/collaboration' effort between HandSpring/Palm being a good thing (I hope anyway...)
I'm working on a way to recharge the batteries via the infrared port;) [what we really need is a solar panel to attach to it!]
We've got someone developing an app for us (for the last year and a half!) that is the biggest, bloated mess you've seen. (No, not Microsoft;) It's built on FoxPro - oops, that alone should be a clue. Anyway, the 'developer' did some testing with users (not me, which was a mistake...) and I don't know what methodology he used, none I'm guessing, but the features are ridiculous... I think the higher-ups said 'this is what we need' and thought they'd just 'magically' get it without any involvement...
There are people who liked: NeXT Cubes Apple/// Lisa
Well, people liked, NeXT Step/Open Step, and the Macintosh, and Apple... Jobs left the Lisa project...
Oh, I really liked Toy Story and A Bug's Like, hmmm, both Steve Jobs were involved in!
Apples SUCCESS was its 'open' Apple ][
Yeah, *was*, and Microsoft's success was DOS, they've both moved on eh?
The iMac has sold almost 2 million units in one year! If Apple had not created the iMac, can you name any company that would have created a computer that would have caputured so much attention (from ORDINARY first time computer buying people?)
Tada! Impossible to copy data (except by analog sampling the speaker output) and all the user has to do is buy a USB SDMIdrive and USB SDMIspeakers. Fire away if you see any technical problems.
Instead of 'analog sampling the speaker output' I just crack it opne, and reroute the speaker wires to the audio in of my stereo, or, send it right back into my computer for re-digitizing... hmmm?

iMac Clone Gets Sued

Honestly, there isn't really anything innovative about the iMac... Compaq was making all-in-one Presarios about 4 years ago... And Im sure they weren't the first.
Yeah, and Apple was making the original Macintosh in 1984 which was an all-in-one... and the TRS-80 I have is even older...
Oh, my favorite prop was the little rotating display thing that Jobs had for the Mac, where he pushed the red button and it turned 180 degrees. Can't you just see him pushing it 100 times for practice before he shows Gates and company?
Gotta get one of those for my next product launch!
Yeah, it was ok, it was *entertainment* not exactly reality. Funny in parts though. Any real hacker admires Steve Wozniak, of course. Did Apple invent the GUI? No, but they did market it, and bring it to the people. A.M. Hall was great as Gates, Ballmer is such a jackass, Jobs is, well, Jobs... no mention of NeXT or Pixar, of course. And, gee, Microsoft _owns_ part of Apple? So does every stockholder, right?
Ummm, try publishing a commercial-quality magazine on something other than the Mac. I've been doing a lot of research on color management, and the Mac OS is still *light years* ahead of even Windows... I don't know when you'll see something like ColorSync for Linux, but until we do, we'll be using our Macs for professional color scanning and color correction, graphics, and publishing.
>Apple is more proprietary than >Microsoft--Microsoft has usually shown a >willingness towards open hardware designes
Yeah, all the computers that Microsoft designs and sells... if Microsoft made a computer it would have all MS proprietary components, be welded shut, and ugly as sin!
>I'm afraid that they're going to be reduced to >same scratching-to-stay-alive heap as Apple.
Oh yeah, apple has no money, no assets, and no cutomers... nobody is buying their products, they'll be gone tomorrow!
Compamies of that size just don't disappear, I bet most people though DEC would be around longer, SGI seems to have an identity crisis... Apple is doing pretty darn good...
I heard on my local news today that a church is asking people to bring in 'objectionable' material - books, cds, etc. and they will then have former professional football player for the Green Bay Packers Reggie [god-tells-me-what-to-do] White stomp on them...
I remember the movie Dune. I saw it in the theater and fell asleep. I then watched it when it was on cable, and fell asleep... Hmmm, I guess I only remember *some* of it...
>I don't see any GUI better than the Win95 GUI out there, do you?
Good god! Of course... do some research, and you'll find the many many flaws in the Win95 GUI, mainly that is it a *badly* done knockoff of the MacOS. And as stated, Be and NeXT are also pretty good...
Oh yeah, Perl, Perl, and more Perl... it's nice ant portable, I do mostly cgi stuff, and run perl scripts on the Mac, NT (ugh!), FreeBSD, Linux... the swiss army chainsaw! the duct tape of the internet!
Mmmmm... perl.... (and occasionally UserTalk, and AppleScript)
My suggestion is get an NT box with all the Microsft hoo-haa, Notes, etc. but also have a *nix box, with Apache, perl, etc. whatever you *really* like to develop on. This way you get the best of both worlds, and above all - choice.
Hmmm, the PowerMac I've got at home does dialup, and has no ethernet card... neither does the older Mac that my kids use...
Will there be 'black market' ethernet cards?
Can I install 3 NIC's?
I haven't used a floppy on my home Mac in a long, long, long time... CD and Zip work fine...
;)
Can we admit these new iMacs have some killer, groundbreaking features (that will be copied by the PC cloners very soon?)
I want an iMac, even last years model, for my kids and the wife - it really would be the *perfect* machine for them...
(I want a G4 for myself of course

The EvangeList was best when it was a group of FUD Fighters (there's a band name idea!) and worst when it was a rabid pack of Mac-Maniacs...
We need more FUD Fighters...
Reagan was there too...
