The AI could see not only see in a view fustrum, but also by how much light you were lit by. The AI could hear depending on what surface you walked on, you could affect the light by putting out torches, affect the sound my mossing the floor. The AI notice bodies and things out of place, such as a climbing rope. The AI also had different alert states. I think that they are pretty good for a game made almost a decade ago.
There are over 400 Thief series fan missions. Last night, I played "Ominous Bequest" http://southquarter.com/?p=131 One level change for 6 hours of gameplay! Yes, Thief 1 and 2 graphics are quite dated, and low-poly, but if you can forgive that, the gameplay and atmosphere compensates for it.
I have written over 150,000 words in OpenOffice Writer on both Windows and Linux.
The windows port has not crashed in years. It's more than stable enough for production work.
Both the Oasis file format and the old writer formats are zip compressed XML, which allowed me to save all 1,500 versions of my book from the day I started on it--to its revisions. An entire 100,000 word book weighs only 242KB whereas the Microsoft word version is 697KB.
My pet peeves are: I hate quickstarters, and I want the quickstarter in OpenOffice removed from the project. The program starting(desktop) icons are poor glyphs.
The questions is: Now that Sun is blowing MS, how do we keep Sun from sabotaging OpenOffice?

The Segway, and other small EV's make sense--especially in Northern California. Cars not only add pollution, make it difficult to find anywhere in CA where you can't hear the roar of the highway during the week.
Segway does have an uphill battle, fighting against the car as the vehicle that has been programmed into your mind as part of the American Dream. We have an entire infrastructure surrounding cars, parts manufactures, mechanics, parts stores, and accessory sales, and they must challenge that.
Find some pictures of an open Segway, look how their made. The machines are expensive, but they cost a lot of money to make. Now they include Li-ion batteries, and have better range.
In urban areas, Seqways make more sense than cars, parking isn't a problem, insurance is cheap, and you can take store them in your apartment.
For everyone riding a Seqway or any other small EV, there is one less car on the road--that is something everyone wants.
The problem is there are too many incompetent people working there who are not intelligent enough to decide who invented what. So they are giving up, saying that anyone can steal anyone's idea, as long as rush into the office quick enough.
They do not want their shoddy work to be reviewed by the courts!
What if this laptop was on a commercial ailiner, would they be able to put the fire out, being on 10 feet from thousands of gallons of fuel.
What if the laptop were in the baggage compartment? Would the exinguishersput out the fire in time.
How many lithiumn batteries on on planes?
Almost any lithium batter can start on fire if overloaded, or most batteries for that matter--even VRLA/SLA, but Lithium batteries in particular, becasue the lithium burns at a low tempature. Li-polymer batteries are supposed to be safer, but after time the lithuium becomes plated around the electodes.
I mentioned it years ago in my fiction book:
"While he held his finger back on the key, he
tapped a password into his portable using a
distinct rhythm."

It also combined a "deadman's" switch program.

Lately, there's been a reinsurance in Thief 1 and 2 add-on missions. There's a updated version of 680mb Thief2X add on. Missions like "Ashen Age," and a "Night in Rocksburg" have breathed a little life into T2 visually.

Someone is working to refresh the Thief Series Engine, but the source code would help. I wish that Eidos would release the source code--for an eight year old game.

I hope I'm not the only one who noticed that it took 10 years to complete the study.

A year or two ago, I wrote a Sci-Fi eBook describing things like this. I wished that it was just all fiction.
A line in the book reads similar to the Slashdot article:
You can download the entire ebook from: http://www.brendamake.com/numbers/
The validation that I feel is overwhelmed by the specter of horrific consequences of the treaty.
