Why not pick up a pair of Etymotic ER-6i earphones? You get 35dB of noise isolation so that you can listen to your music at more reasonable volumes. They sell for $89 through several outlets on Amazon. I use them all the time on a very noisy subway train in Boston and they do wonders for canceling the noise (not to mention they sound great).

I think it's clear that Google Labs will be what Bell Labs was 30 years ago. Trust me, we haven't even seen a fraction of what they are currently working on. You can doubt what they are doing all you like, it doesn't change the fact that they are packed with talent. Perhaps they will not be as hugely profitable as they have been with AdSense, Bell Labs never made great profits, but I have no doubt they will be the most innovative place on the planet for the next 10 years.
The US getting its ass kicked (economically) will hopefully put a lid on the arrogance that it has displayed by running roughshot over world opinion on matters of security, economic justice and the environment.
Besides, the Chinese make better scientists anyway.
Amen, my brother! MIT is not a land of unfathomable genius. It is a good school full to the brim with students who test well, work their asses off, and pay an enormous amount of tuition for a great brand name. Don't get me wrong, there are smart people here, but the MIT brand name does not bestow special cognitive abilities to its students. It doesn't really surprise me that a group of motivated high school students could whoop some MIT ass. There are alot of very bright people in the world who never get a brand name education and yet still manage to make incredible contributions to society. Send these kids to a good state school for engineering and see what they can do!
