The effect of prayer might be due to knowing you are being prayed for, the researchers did not want to eliminate this possibility.
There have been dozens of prior studies which had various flaws. This is the largest well-formed study I'm aware of.
Similarly, studies of say accupuncture, where it is difficult to hide the treatment from patients have been typically poorly formed. One interesting study I saw recently uses bogus needles so patients believe they are receiving treatment, but are actually not. The doctor would have to be unaware but this isn't possible in this case for it to be double-blind.
Prayer-receiving and non-prayer receiving, told they were getting prayer and not told they were getting prayer. This eliminates the placebo effect, since you can compare people truthfully told they were getting prayer with people falsely told they were getting prayer.
You're complaining about something being posted on slashdot being tired and redundant.
This complaint itself is tired and redundant.
I don't think anyone reads slashdot for the latest news, they read so they can post and read comments. CNN doesn't listen to or publish readers views, and fark is, well, fark.
I've become much less dogmatic about things as I've grown older. I used to be brutally honest about everything all the time, and encourage everyone else to do the same.
I'm still more open than most, but accept that pragmatism is sometimes the better part of valor. The type of women I'm drawn to aren't easily freaked out, but some of my friends definitely need to keep their filthy natures on the lowdown to avoid unnecessary relationship friction.
Personally, I think many problems can be avoided by being honest about human nature. We will always be attracted to other people. I think this can be handled in a healthy manner. Not everyone shares this perspective, and I've grown to accept that. I live my way, they live theirs.
There's something to be said for uniform behaviour for non-expert users. The kind of user who uses TweakUI would only use support as a last resort, and knows how to navigate around. The kind of user who has trouble finding the start button won't be able to change the UI. Which makes troubleshooting over the phone possible.
If my mother were able to dink around with settings easily I'd have to change my number instead of firing up my "straight windows" box and telling her exactly what to do.
With a monitor that big, it'll be easy. Top 1/2 of the screen will be my movie, bottom left will be work, bottom right slashdot.
Actually, I don't tend to watch tv while using my computer much these days. Between having no ads and choosing shows I actively want to see, it's easy to pay attention. Oh yeah, I don't watch live tv anymore. Too much bullshit. I download/record what I want and watch it on my terms.
Just have a bot check an email account every minute for your request, when you email your special acct it initiates a connection to your location. You don't care what ip address is used, you just want a connection right?
I've been storing up bandwidth in my bunker for just this scenario.
I've got about a dozen 55 gallon drums full in my compound's basement.
Seriously though, I thought there was a lot of unused fiber around, and it's just not that expensive to add more bandwidth. Obviously there isn't enough for everyone to saturate a huge pipe 24/7 right now, but if demand spikes there are ways to increase supply. I'm doing my part by keeping my pipe flowing full blast with about 99.95% uptime, although upload saturates way before download. Yeah, I've got DSL.
Smokers, obese, and inactive people die younger than healthy people, right? So they need healthcare for fewer years. If they need twice the healthcare for 1/3 the number of "health care intensive" years it saves money.
I've never seen a study of the numbers, but my healthy grandpa used up much more healthcare than my smokin' uncle. Every time I've seen somebody blandly state that unhealthy living "costs society money" they ignore the shorter lifespan, and the fact that most people (healthy or not) need intensive healthcare towards the end of their life.
That is an interesting suggestion. Instead of using my monitor as a TV I could use my TV as a monitor. That's the kind of thinking this country needs!
It would work pretty well I think. It could sit at the back edge of my huge desk, about 5' from my eyes. My couch could be 5' further back from my desk. If I keep my desk cleaner it'd be a nice setup.
People got bored of their sex partners before porn existed, and people today who ostensibly do not watch porn get bored of their sex partners.
People who watch porn sometimes do not get bored of their sex partners, in fact porn may help them stay interested in their sex partners.
I've seen many relationships broken up by "cheating" but none from porn. (although sometimes it is best to hide porn habits - some women feel threatened by it and arguing is rarely erotic)
I have an elderly 17" CRT monitor I'm going to replace when it dies. (Please die soon!) I've been watching the LCD prices drop and drop, now I'm thinking 21" if it dies now.
That's nearly as big as my TV, so maybe it makes sense for me to spend double my monitor budget and replace my TV at the same time. I could mainly use a small part of the screen sitting at my desk (to avoid too much neck motion) and sitting back on my couch use it as a TV.
Remember when people were paying hundreds of dollars for megapixel cameras? or $500 for 15" LCD displays?
The same items do the same things today, only they are 1/10 the price.
My only problem now is how to motivate. I told myself I'd get a 17" display when they hit $200, then 19", now I'm saying (without believing it) 21"/$200. I'll probably buy whatever I can get for $200 when my current "good" monitor dies. I hope it is within 10 years or I'll lose credibility.
Here in Colorado we have many voter initiatives every election, often a dozen. Such as Abortions for Everyone, or No Abortions for Anyone. In addition to this we vote on President, federal senate, federal house, state senate, state house, school board, sheriff, district attourney, numerous judges, transit authority reps, and various other political offices.
I've lived in several states, numerous counties within the US and never seen a simple "A or B" ballot. Not even close.
It gives us the illusion of democratic government and the possibility of change.
I assumed it was because they were near the harbor, and sold freight that came off the boat.
Maybe I'm being too logical here, but it sorta makes sense.
Now, they're everywhere, so the colorado stores aren't so logically named.
You're complaining because emule doesn't install spyware?!?
Damn spoiled kids these days...
I thought it got a lot of graffiti before it was posted on slashdot.
You can buy them anywhere, here is an example
Well, according to Mirriam Webster the 2nd definition of nadir means "the lowest point."
I'm afraid GP is correct in his usage.

I'm glad to see some proper studies done regarding this, as I'm sick of listening to people quote the poorly formed studies.

Hm, makes sense. That way our President won't capsize.
India Aims to Tame Soaring IT Wages is the headline for anyone too lazy to click.
Let's start a PR campaign for "Other White Meat Barrel Projects"

Sure, I suppose I'm a hit, but does that matter anymore?
For $18 I got a ticket, a drink, popcorn, and some CD single of a band I didn't like.
They called it "lidrock." Came on the lid of my drink.
I'm never going back to that theater.
