And let's not forget the fact that Louisiana's National Guard are mostly deployed over in Iraq. They were not even in place or ready to help the state cope with the disaster, because the Federal government thinks they can be put to better use overseas.

Fool - there were national guard left in the state, and the state government let them sit around. The state government was advised to preposition everything they had before the storm hit to help keep order and control post-hurricane. They did not. They heeded no warnings.

Let's also not forget that since 2003, the levy budget has been but a pittance due to lack of contribution by the federal government because of, specifically, needing to fund the Iraq war.

I keep wondering why it's the federal government's job to build levies in NO, a city. Nevertheless, it would have taken a whole hell of a lot more money than what was asked for by *anybody* to get the levies category-4-hurricane-ready.

So yeah, the government screwed up bigtime... but it was the state's and city's faults entirely. It isn't the federal government's job to protect states in this situation... mereley to augment or aid them.

Isn't that what the Inquirer is all about, though? We don't go there to read about solid, concrete facts. We go there to read about the industry rumors.

And a lot of other parallelizable applications require access to huge datasets that make them unsuitable for distributed work. For example, 3D rendering can be parallelized pretty well... but the datasets are huge. For your CPU to render a single frame of Pixar's latest movie, it would need access to anywhere from hundreds of MB to several GB of texture and geometry data.

'cause they like me. Seriously. I'm two for three so far. And my first story was really crap (written horribly).

Look at other /. postings; this is the style of article they like today. It's hardly a troll... two popular linux distributions released x86-64 ports (er, well, sorta... Slack didn't release Slamd64) today... it's news. :-)

That's not a clone of Slack 10.1, it's an officially sanctionned port.
It is a port, but it's not official.
Furthermore, Slack 10.1 will run just fine on AMD64, because AMD64, and ia64 as well, are backwards compatible and will run code intended for 32-bit processors.
Yes, Slack 10.1 will run fine on x86-64 boxes, but it won't take advantage of any of the 64-bit extentions OOTB (nor ever as well as slamd64). And no, IA64 is not backwards compatible and will not run code intended for 32-bit processors without emulation. That's why x86-64 is so popular...
