I'd have to say that I'm in full agreement with your post, however MS is actually just a marketing company, not a software company. Their products are all crap, intended for profit margins and not innovation of the computing industry.
Years ago, I wrote applications using the win32 api. But I could never get my work to look as clean as theirs. I finally concluded that they must keep some special system api functions secret to maintain an edge on competitor's efforts.
Another example to add to my disgust for microsoft is when I used their backup software that came with winblows 95, to archive my work and data, later down the line when I was running winblows 98 or 2k and decided to access the archived data on those old CDs, "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that". WTF??? Those fucking assholes changed the backup format and skipped including any backwards compatibility. I opted to just throw out the unreadable disks rather than reinstalling that abortion of an OS (win95) just to recover the data contained on those old archive CDs.
Life has become much better since I migrated my life to Linux, and if I need to perform a compressed archive, at least tar will always work. But since DVD's became the archive medium of choice, there isn't much need for compressed archives.
I dumped MS for Linux in 2001 and have used slackware, suse, mandrake, red hat/fedora, ubuntu, debian, etc...
All beading edge distributions use alpha/beta applications which cause the instability that most complain about. Ubuntu is NO different despite all the rave.
I use my system for production and business management and have no time for system crashes, software glitches, or file system corruption. As such, I have settled with Debian Etch i386 and KDE as my distribution and GUI of choice. It is extremely stable and far more advanced than any MS product that I care about. Even operations that will choke Windows "Extra Proprietary" run quickly and smoothly in Debian 4. I have the most recent 2.6.23 kernel, OOo 2.3, K3B 1.x, full multimedia, USB hotplug, self-healing journaled filesystem, etc, etc,... Win2k/WinXP can hold NO candle to this. Occasionally I must boot 2k or XP for QuickBooks or Autocad, but the MS experience is always frustrating, buggy, gets in your way, and pisses me off to the point of wanting to throw my PC out the window. Most anything else that you can do in WinBlows can be done in Linux faster and easier. There is always a learning curve to any new technology, and I prefer to learn and use the OSS solution than using any "dead end" MS based crap-ware.
The best thing Microsoft can claim to it's credit is an Internet full of spyware, malware, spam bots, trojan horses,... and WTF is up with all those dipshit asshole web site designers that comply to IE specification in lieu of W3C compliance. Anyone that writes a web site that cannot be properly rendered using a web compliant browser should be strung up by their balls in the center of town square.
As you may recall, MS was behind the funding of the SCO lawsuits. Now that SCO is in their final death throws, MS has found more fools to finance and carry on the assault champaign against open source software, the community, and linux in general. At the moment, I forget what they call themselves, but they are essentially the patent trolls of texas, and are the ones bringing the new round of law suits against Novell and Red Hat, for starters.
So much for Novell's alliance with MicroShaft. Shake hands in the open and smile for the photo ops, but plunge a knife into Novell's back when no one is looking.
Truth be told (which I am rather embarrassed about now), I voted for Bush in 2000 because and only because of Tipper Gore and Lieberman's stance on video games.
Thank you for owning to to being wrong on that one. Not many republicans are smart enough or even willing to admit responsibility for fucking up America by voting republican. Just don't do it again and all will be forgiven.
I knew Bush was a loser from the start when his fuzzy math statement came out. Clearly he was, and still is a dimwit. His father was also a liar, big time loser, and did nothing good for the country.
Neither republicans or democrats are good for America and freedom anymore. Unfortunately we don't have any good choices this time around. Quoting wisdom: "Choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil".
The best contest for next election will be a choice between Obama and Ron Paul. I believe either one would uphold the principals of democracy and freedom, the Constitution and Bill of Rights. All other candidates will be CRAB revisited: witch hunts, spanish inquisition, no bid contracts to the good 'ol boy club, and continuation of dark ages mentality,... and it goes downhill from there
Maybe its just me, but I own an HP laptop with windows xp on it. I have the codecs installed by HP, and have been granted and purchased the right to use them to view/listen to media. Both the laptop and my desktop dual boot linux and MS. If I own a dvd and want to watch it in the comfort of my home, I have that right even if it is viewed on either system and using windows or linux. Same as running windows software on linux using cross over office. By purchasing the software from MS I have been granted the license to use it if I choose. Anyone that has ever purchased any microsoft OS and has been granted the license to play any media using propritary codecs have that right.
There is a big difference between listening or viewing media you have purchased legally, and burning thousands of copies of media and handing it out to all your friends or selling them on the street corner. Of course I would not do any such thing anyway as this is the reason the artists do what they do and I don't mind supporting them. Piss on the RIAA!
The exception to never, ever is in the case where haliburton sells goods and services to iran illegally. Cuba does not train and sponsor terrorists but iran does. Go figure...
Your post is pure bullshit... you must work for fox corp or some other republiNazi group. In the REAL world, all conservatives are self-centered gluttons that believe that is morally correct to cheat on their taxes, cheat everyone they do business with, never pay your bills on time, and never pay interest on past due debts you owe other hard working people you do business with. Get a clue, or buy one if you don't have the brains to formulate your own.
I disagree..
this study is flawed
I'm the 3rd child out of four.
The oldest is male, then female, then male (me)...
I am much smarter than my older brother. He sucked @ calculus, I aced it. He is republican, I am not.
I rest my case!
The purpose of DHS is to propagate widespread paranoia and maintain a controllable level at all times.
With paranoia, those in power can enjoy freedoms such as controlling the flow and subsequent market price of OIL. It's all about avarice and control, nothing more.
For example, the past few years have been extremely profitable for the "good 'ol boy" club. They have literally raped the American people (and the rest of the world for that matter) of trillions of dollars of national wealth and shipped it into offshore accounts. Hailburton has moved it's corporate headquarters off shore (posted here on/. recently).
Managing threat levels and paranoia also function as a great smoke screen. For example, when caught with your pants down with a young boy, or busted for some scandal, raise threat levels, tell everyone they are all going to die, the terrorists are coming for your children, run for cover screaming AHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Works every time!
Another side effect of general paranoia is that they can side step the Bill of Rights and conduct illegal surveillance and wiretaps of any citizen.
The one thing republicans love as much as acquiring other peoples money is wiretapping and spying on citizens and/or dissenters. They have a long history and tradition of illegal wiretapping. Nixon got in trouble with it and Reagan enjoyed an unfettered use of it. All in the guise of national (in)security. If they could have a camera in everyones home they would be in hog heaven.
This is not a new story. They could refit Hubble with new gyros, faster computer hardware and better cameras, but they would rather throw billions of dollars more than what would repair Hubble, at the next-gen space telescope (NGST). They have this brilliant idea that they can locate this thing at Lagrangian point L2, or about 4 times the distance to the moon from earth. This way when it breaks or just doesn't work, there is no easy way anyone can get to it for repairs.
What they should do, instead of chasing fanciful dreams, is concentrate on repairing and upgrading the shuttle fleet so they don't blow up on lift off or landing. And keep the Hubble in service which is a reliable and working technology, and can be repaired and upgraded when necessary.

Not too proud to be an American these days
