Well, I guess I know what I'm doing this weekend. Sounds like it rocks. Some of my dad's friends that are retired Air Force fighter pilots are contractors on the Predator, so I have slightly more than a passing interest in what ti does
Well, there must have been some serious misthinking involved in this endevour. Its not as if Sun is alien to open source of free software ideas, having been cofounded by Bill Joy, who started the whole BSD thing, wrote Vi, etc.
Sun should have been able to do this right. Frankly, I think that it might have a lot more to do with Linux having already been solidly entrenched by the time they got around to putting OpenSolaris out -- sort of like how Free/Net/OpenBSD now lurk in the shadows, despite whatever technical merit they have compared to Linux.
We already have a free SysV UNIX and that is Linux. Open Solaris is trying to solve a problem no one really had -- but I suspect that it does help out a good bit those who have to administer the systems to be able to see everything inside of them.
There is just really no compelling reason for us to pick it up when we already have everything we want.
At least they seem to be finding their footing again with the news of making Java free software yesterday. There is reason to hope that things might get better.
you can't play with/etc/shadow unless you are root. if you are root, you can change your user's password. if you forgot your root password, you can't get/etc/shadow, unless you have your user and do sudo, in which case you could change your password anyway... or boot into single user.
I am not a hillbilly or a redneck. I am just fed up with federal MURDER of innocent citizens. It has nothing to do with the wicked north, just the wicked democrats who support abortition, gay marraige, and a whole slew of immoral acts, most of which would make the ancient greeks cringe in disgust.
Yes, I believe in elected officials, Republic (democracy is anarchy and pisses me off), et cetera.
I don't want to see a world government of any form ever. Government is not ment to take care of the needs of the people, anyway. That is communism and can kiss my paddy-ass. James Connolly may have been a great many, but it's not the 19th century anymore. "The Jungle" isn't relevent, and communism is dead. I give to charity. That is my duty as a human of good moral character. However, to allow the government to steal from me and give my money to other people is flat out criminal. To allow the government to tell me what I can say or think is evil. There should be consiquences for what is DONE not what is THOUGHT or SAID. say I openly advocate the murder of the British Royal Family. Doesn't mean I am going to do it. If I do, then throw my ass in Long Kesh, see if I care.

you just dont' value anything but your bloody palm pilot and think that "open source" is the be-all and end-all of "freedom." try waking up for once and looking around. Everything you have was paid for with the blood of martyrs and patriots.
Obviously you've never had to fight for your freedom, or know anyone who has died for it, gone to prison for it, et cetera. How soon you forget all the people who gave so much so you could be free, that you'd sell it out to forigners in a heart beat for some empty line.
My grandfather was in the American Army durring WWII-- fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the Colmar Pocket in 75th infanty, k company, 3rd army... he was a mortar squad leader. I seem to remember a war being fought to keep the Nazis from A) controling all of Europe B) silencing anything they disagreed with
So, now we have a government controling all of Europe, sliencing what they don't agree with (hating hate is still being hateful. They must therefor ban anti-nazi websites).
And World War One... britian entered in for, what was it? oh yes... to defend the right to self-determination of small nations (except, apparantly for Ireland or anything else they weilded their iron fist over).
How soon you all forget the men who died and what they died for. Personally, I think it's shameful that Europeans are willingly giving up soverignty, autonomy, and local flavour (don't even get me started on how much i hate the Euro).
Why do you have to aid diversity? Ireland for the Irish, England for the English, France for the French, Italy for the Italians, Catalan for the Catalonians, Arabia for the Arabs, Africa for Africans, et cetera. The world is diverse, and destroying local culture in an effort not to offend foreign interlopers is a sick, sick travisty of justice.
but for different reasons. I am against the Federal Govt. of the United States. I am against the UN. I am against the EU. What do all these things have in common? The destruction of soverignty were it belongs -- with people who are going to use it. Personally, I don't give two shits what people in California think. I refuse to accept anything as law that they had anything to do with. Equally, I don't see how the Germans have any right to go telling the Irish what to do. We've lost too many men getting rid of the British to just sell it out again (i'm a Sinn Fein member, 100% all beef Paddy, blah blah, who cares). Likewise, what some communist like Kofe Annon thinks means shit to me whether I am in the USA, Ireland, or the Republic of my Asshole. For christ's sake, people, get over it, leave your neighbours alone, and get on with living your life in your own little community and you'll be happier for it. Politics be damned!
The sad fact is, that not only are the glory days of NASA behind us, but the glory days in general are behind us. I, for one, have an extreamly bleak outlook on the future, and I am sure I am not alone.
what you are "allowed" to do, and what you DO do are too different things. Besides, a lot of good it's going to do you when nothing is in theodora or whatever because all the people putting out South Park episodes use RM and all the pornographers are into AVI and MPEG. Then of course, there is the reverse: when no one can watch our propaganda because they've never heard of whatever this is, and they say "why should i download yet another media player!," or when they attempt to open it and Windows Media Player says "cannot find software needed to decode this file!" like it or not, mpeg and mp3 are more or less de facto standards. the big players arn't going to just go and include this willy-nilly to make an angry hoard of geeks happy (it'd take many, many slashdots to bring down microsoft.com, i am sure). it is easier for the angry geeks to shell out the dough in contributions to XMMS or whatever so as to buy the licensing fees. Why? becuase everyone knows what MP3 is -- even tards who slipped on the ice and hit their head on the pavement.
tcp/ip and http seem to be the only standards that people actually adhere to anymore... but wait!! i can't look at finegael.ie and see the news ticker unless i am using IE. BS! and that is just one example.
Do we really need yet another format? i know the mantra of "choice is good," but then having to track down all the little things i need to decode every random video or audio file i come across is sort of the opposite of good. it's bloody obnoxiouse, honestly. i still don't know what an asf is (mostly because i am too lazy to look it up).
I'm sure i'll catch flack, but i suspect this is a good idea. Of course, it would take legislation or money, or both, and those are two things slashdotters don't like. here it is any way:
Step One: say, CERT or someone else makes a task force whos only job is to constantly audit software for security issue like the OpenBSD people do. All commercial software venders, even Microsoft had to fork over the source to them for audits. Step Two: said taskforce notifies vender A about security hole b. Vender a then has a certain number of days, say, two weeks, to release the patch. Penalties are dished out for companies who don't patch their software Step Three: the people who USE the software are given the patch. They then MUST patch the system OR ELSE. Home deployment of Windows or something have to be auto updated. Corporations maybe not so, particularly due to network structures and whatnot. However, if they don't patch the system, then they can';t complaine when their network gets trashed. If another network gets hit after theirs, they are responsible for allowing the virus/worm to propagate.
Putting everything out there in public journals and whatnot and not having any force of law to make companies put patches out ASAP (such as MS who will say "it'll be in the next service pack..." in like, 3 months) makes it so there really is no point in saying anything, when little gets done. h4x0rz churn out exploits faster than companies put out patches because they can get away with the "don't blame us" bullshit in their EULAs. EULAs should also be outlawed.
Because as we all know, Saddam was such a nice guy. he would have given all kinds of food and medicine to his poor, starving citizens who democratically elected him, had the big bad US not imposed those sanctions on those little doe-eyed children.
Fuck you you commie pussy licker. Someone ought to crush your head into the curb with the heal of his Doc Martins.
Well, I guess I know what I'm doing this weekend. Sounds like it rocks. Some of my dad's friends that are retired Air Force fighter pilots are contractors on the Predator, so I have slightly more than a passing interest in what ti does
And in other news, slide rules have lost ground to graphing calculators with CAS systems...
We put a man on the moon with less computing power than my TI-89. The morale of the story is, people are just getting lazier in general.

I went to join the other day. I have to be off my meds for 6 months first. Secret armies don't bother with such things, anyway.

Michael Jackson beggs to differ.

how very cleaver ripping off the comment of AC
Step 1: Steel Saturn V
Step 2: Steel phantom WMD from Iraq
Step 3: Put up a tent in some desert hell hole
Step 4: ???
Step 5: PROFIT!!
Zoolander is one of those things which should not be available AT ALL, commercially or otherwise.
the point of corporations is that they act as an individual, can have property, et cetera.

that know about present-day java performance, the more people will use java. is that really "the better?"
