Please keep in mind that being only nearly 20, the depth of my personal experience is not that of say, someone who was around when UNIX was first rolled out. However, I have been in my day an avid C and BSD (mostly FreeBSD, but some NetBSD) user. Honestly, from where I sit (you may agree or not), programming and computer stuff in general has become a lot less like a science or craft, and more like a factory job. In the early days programmers who physicists, engineers, and mathamaticians. Today programmers are just programmers. More and more computer science departments are teaching using Java. Why? because it helps people to understand how the computer works? no. Simply, because it's what the industry is using. I had 4 technicians from Cox over at my house yesturday because my parents couldn't figure out what was wrong with the cable modem. They were the most filthy, disgusting bunch I have ever seen and were dressed more like gas station attendants than professionals. Why? because that sort of work has become blue-collar and low-rent. Programmers are no longer expected to be educated beyond their field. they are being educated to produce software, not to be COMPUTER SCIENTISTS. How many graduates of say, ITT Tech would actually understand Knuth, even if they have ever heard of him? Likely, not many. That is why software sucks. That is why the programming "trade" sucks. and that is why companies can send the jobs abroad to people who work for peanuts. Programming is just like stamping "Ford" on the grill in a Detroit assembly plant these days and nothing more.
i don't like buying things because i am broke. The web pisses me off because all it wants to do is sell me shit. If i am trying to research something i just want the information, not bloody sales propaganda. Perhaps PBS was a poor choice of comparison, but the only one I can think of just now. However, I have no problem with non-profit organizations and there are a number of them which I have the utmost respect for.
Excuse me, I am sure I must be mistaken, but interesting is hardly the word i would use to describe this. What would be interesting to me? A free, non-profit, search engine. Not funded by advertising. It would sort of be like the PBS of the of the WWW. If I search for anything, pretty much the first hits are going to include Amazon.com advertising books about the subject. Doesn't this defeat the purpose of the web? I would like to see only the online information which is A) free (as in dollar bills) to access and B) actually acurate (ie, not written by jr. highschool history classes which leave out all of the details and most of the actual facts). Honestly, if it would also search articles in magazines and scientific/trade journals, and give me access to the full text, i may even be willing to actually PAY for the service. Something like, $10-$15 per month, even. This would greatly enhance the productivity of unversity students and professors.
psychology is the big lie and the only reason it's worth investigating is to educate ourselfs in order to counter the propogation of psychology. Therefor, as ths guy is a psychologist, he must be a liar and a thief. Why do we want an artificial orangutang for anyway? we can grow real ones that don't require programming to tell the difference between an apple and a bannnana
In "Open Sources," Bob the Red Hat guy responds to the question "how do you make money with free/open source software" with "that makes the assumption that it is easy (or easier) to make money selling proprietary software." (not an exact quote, but it's close enough). I suspect that most software products actually fail in the market place, or atleast will fall into a small niche market. Linux itself is a niche market, and targeting to niche users in an already niche base futher decreases the amount of potential customers. Even if someone has 100% of the Linux market, that's only like, 10% of the total market, with a liberal (not something i am known for) estimation. So i would say taht the real problem with selling to linux users is the selling to linux users. A company is not going to stay afloat vending end-user software only to Linux customers. Even the most sucessful Mac software producers find it necessary to port their stuff to Windows. StarOffice has the ease of instillation and support on Windows, Linux, and Solaris. Adding Mac to taht is no issue. I've made it work on FreeBSD without too much hassle either. A successful linux ISV is going to have to have Windows and/or Mac versions of their product to keep the company with enough revenue in order to offer the product to Linux users because the base simply is not there to keep the company opperational otherwise unless the product is truely groundbreaking, breathtaking, or has 0 competition and no free alternatives (not bloody likely). Just my $0.02. Take it for what it's worth.
Sedition is defined as speach which advocates the immedate and violent overthrow of the government in a fashion as to provide a clear and present danger, if my memory serves me correctly. My question is, would an internet website fall into that catigory, as it does not have the same force as say, Hitler in the Haufbrauhause with like, 2,000 SA going to storm the Bavarian capital building. It does have a wider audience, but due to the decentralized nature I doubt that a website can provide a clear and present danger or immediate action at all. Am I wrong? Does the PATRIOT Act redefine it in such a way as to make it "terrorism?"
the constitution says that congress may raise an army for a period of no more than 2 years. The standing army is evil and unconstitutional. Plus, people don't pay attention if it's not their son/brother/cousin/friend/husband being shipped off to some god forsaken hell hole. However, I do not believe in the PATRIOT Act or the Homeland Security people. We have a homeland security provision already: It is called the 2nd Amendment. I'll more than gladly join the militia, but i refuse to be forced to check bags at the airport, and i am less than enthused about the idea of going off to war outside of the country. However, I am still against the standing army and for the draft.
The only thing i have against Bush is the PATRIOT Act. And honestly, I'd be more affraid of Reno running around with that than Ashcroft... Waco, Ruby Ridge, Elian... and all that withing "acceptable" laws... I'd rather die that have a democrat in charge. But I won't vote Republican either.
Libertarians were always a lunatic fringe. I'm strongly concidering going to the CP's VA State Convention on the 24th and attempting a seat as a party elector for the electoral college. I don't know where my sis has gone off to in order to ask her the bill numbers or i would cite them.
skilled officers are not cannon fodder. They want the unwashed masses that are otherwise useless drains on society in order to eliminate the problem by killing them off. Besides, if you join the military with a college degree, they automagically put you in OCS (or so i have heard), or at least as a relativly well off NCO. I have no military experience myself. I had a cousin in Vietnam, grand parents in the Army and Navy in WW2, and an uncle who sucked so bad they sent him to Korea 3 times to get him out of the way, so don't quote me as an authority.
there are twin bills in the house and senate in order to conscript for active duty, rerserve military, and homeland security civilian jobs. Male and female. 18-26. Manidtory 2 years. I forgot the bill numbers. My little sister did a paper on it for her highschool government class. I'll stake my life and reputation that it's true, though. The bills have been in the works since early in 2003 and the schedual is to bring them into effect in 2005.
We have a real world with real problems to deal with, and these people would rather play a game and pretend in order to avoid it? Isn't this like drugs? One the one hand we have evil, money-stealing authoritarian Democrats, on the other evil coportaist fascist Republicans. Neither party respects the constitution. Neither party will do what is right (defined by me as both constitutional and expediant). So, how about instead of worrying about dream land, we worry about what's actually outside beating down on our doors? Don't vote for Kerry or Bush. Don't vote for Nader. Vote for real candidates from parties that are true to the cause of freedom: The Constitution Party Libertarian Party Vote first, revolt second. However, do not ever allow yourself to lose the right to either. We'll be needing them rarther soon.
i'm not working...i've gone back to school and live at home..being only nearly 20 i still have the luxory of fixing my mistakes. After I finish my English BA with a minor in Economics and my Associates in Business Administration I am going to take the series 7 stock broker's exam. Clearly I am not a man of the proletariat, but being in state and local politics, it is my perogative to tell others what to do with their money, although I dislike doing it. I'm just an ultra-nationalist and don't believe in free trade.
i ought not need to leave my country to get a job working for a company from my country. then again, i'm not in tech anymore anyway. But it's a matter of principle.
troll means hooking for bites, like fishing. yeah, so? just because it's a troll doesn't mean it isn't the truth, just that it's not fun for the fish. it's not like i used fake baite.
but does it really matter? they'd have spent the money on something anyway because they seem to think that it is theirs to spend and that they are some how above the citizenry that they were elected by and from. They might as well have spent it on something "cool." as for searching for terrorists and stuff, big bloody whoop. As long as they only index and infringe on non-citizens, i really don't care. of course, they are going to do that and it doesn't matter who is president because both major parties are in on the international totalitarian conspiricy.
who is sick of this commie liberal "think of the children" bullshit that seeks to substitute parents actually teaching their kids right from wrong? Maybe I'll go play DOOM and shoot up a high school, since apparantly that's all it takes...
Like "terrorists," "script kiddies" and other "h4x0r" types just do this sort of shit for the notority and publicity. Unlike terrorists, they have no real goal. Therefor, once the publicity, which creates a justification for the activity, disapears the activity will become unprofitable in the sense that fame is a comodity which is worth something. It'd be better just to ignore the little fuckers until they grow up and go away. At least, that is how it seems from where I sit.
I'm sure I am going to get modded down for this, but even until fairly recent (19th century) times, students in Wales were forbidden from speaking in Welsh. If they spoke, they had to wear a "Welsh knot" which served to single them out, like a dunce cap. Elvish is based on Welsh. Therefor, I find it slightly ironic and a little offensive that after attempting to stomp out a language and culture to subjugate a people, th English would now teach a bastardization of Welsh as some sort of joke. disclaimer: I am not Welsh, but Irish-American. I am, however, extremely sensitive to exploitation and abuse of Celtic peoples and cultures. I do have many Welsh and Welsh-American friends and acquantances. Elvish, and Welsh are very beautiful languages though. I just wish they would teach the/real/ language and culture instead of a synthetic creation.
until they take this thing and use it to photograph the rape for their sick, twisited pleasure. I don't think that this is a good marketing scheme for these.
In fact, I don't think there is any way to market these things that'd make/me/ buy one. Of course, I do have a tendency to over estimate the sanity of the average tech consumer (which is sad, because they must be buying, in droves, all kinds of stupid shit or companies would not continue to make them).
Please keep in mind that being only nearly 20, the depth of my personal experience is not that of say, someone who was around when UNIX was first rolled out. However, I have been in my day an avid C and BSD (mostly FreeBSD, but some NetBSD) user.

maybe they should draft everyone in India then ;-)
