  1. FUCKING P.C. on What's New in Blade Runner - The Final Cut? · · Score: 2, Informative
I haven't seen it yet, but what's wrong with the director ? Seemingly, he added more gore, but removed the line

    "I want more life, FUCKER"

?! For me, it was a significant line, and it was working well in the movie. This was the point in the movie where the roles of master and slave between Tyrell and Roy were reversed. It was Roy now who was in control. If you replace "fucker" with respectful "father", you lose that, you'll get a respectful 'son'.
I've seen both the international/theatrical lasedirsk version and the Director's Cut, and I liked the Director's cut more (no voiceovers, unicorn). But this time I might pass on it. If I get a chance to see it in a theater, I will; but for DVD I'll stick to 1992 version.

I've been interested in SAGE for a while, but never heard about the Firefox plugin. Heck, world does not revolve around Firefox (besides, I use Opera for a number of reasons, let's not get into that). If there's so much freaking ambiguity that the wrold cannot tolerate (more than Apple Inc. vs Apple Music vs. Apple Bank vs. Apple Younameit), you should understand that the folks on Sage Math have done quite a bit more work on the package, and probably shouldn't ditch a name that has been known. If you never heard of it- probably you never needed to use Mathematica or the like anyway.

  3. I knew SPAM=email before I knew SPAM='food' on Spam Lawsuit's Last Laugh is at Hormel's Expense · · Score: 1

I can see a day where people will scratch their heads and wonder why Hormel name a product after junk mail

Actually, coming from Ukraine, I was quite amused to see SPAM on the shelves at the stores. Of course, I kind of knew the origin of the term, but somehow I thought that SPAM-the-product was long extinct. Actually, the only reason I bought a can of SPAM once was just that - that act of "buying spam". I really felt amazed that a popular product could be "named after junk email" =)

The next thing that I'd buy in that spirit would probably be a "1337" T-Sirt, signifying Petrarca's visit to Rome in 1337. Or maybe YouTube plumbing kits, MicroSoft small pillows, maybe a Digg shovel (given that these products come into existence some day)

On an unrelated note, my father seems to actually to like spam-like products. I'll defintitely buy him SPAM some day. Then I would be able to make stupid-cheesy jokes, like "My dad doesn't have any spam, he ate it all yesterday" etc.

  5. DJVU anyone ? on Amazon's Ebook The Future of Reading? · · Score: 1

I bet this thing won't suppport DJVU, the best format for eBooks tha weren't natively typest into PDF.

As an aside note, I'm 20, and I have a bunch of books and a bunch of eBooks, and I think that each kind is better for its purpose. For instance, software documentation requires fast lookups, and I'm using it while doing things on a computer anyway, so it better be in electronic format. On the other hand, 'real' books IMHO are more comfortable to read, never require batteries, and so far DPI resolution of print is biggern than the one of the screen.

I think it's a stupid thing to say that one format is better than other, especially when you can have both and convert freely. I frequently print out sections of scanned books, so that I don't have to carry the whole book, but have the comfort of paper (thus going the full circle: print-scan-print). I hope that in the future every book will come with a CD containing it; and you already can print out your ebooks for not-that-much (Kinkos/laser printer/inket with 3rd party $2 cartridges). So let's stop the zealotry war, and start celebrating the spread of both formats =)

Oh yes they are. They only really go after corporate piracy (and not that hard either). I have yet to hear about a home user being 'busted' with bootleg Windoze. Moreover, with their activation scheme it's not that hard to know who's pirating; probably they do know and do nothing about it. The main reason is that when someone who's been bootlegging buys a new computer, that computer will be preloaded with Windoze. And his computer at work will likely be a Windoze PC too, just because most people know how to work in it. etc. That's an old drug-dealer strategy - the first time is for free, then they come to you with money. Basically: 1. Let users pirate Windoze 2. Get them hooked on the OS/Platform-dependent software/MSOffice/IE 3. ??? 4. Profit !
