Public school teachers are in much the same position as prison wardens. Wardens' main concern is to keep the prisoners on the premises. They also need to keep them fed, and as far as possible prevent them from killing one another. Beyond that, they want to have as little to do with the prisoners as possible, so they leave them to create whatever social organization they want. From what I've read, the society that the prisoners create is warped, savage, and pervasive, and it is no fun to be at the bottom of it.
In outline, it was the same at the schools I went to. The most important thing was to stay on the premises. While there, the authorities fed you, prevented overt violence, and made some effort to teach you something. But beyond that they didn't want to have too much to do with the kids. Like prison wardens, the teachers mostly left us to ourselves. And, like prisoners, the culture we created was barbaric.
The only stupid question is one that isn't asked. Nobody knows everything (and I asked the question before I had my first cup of coffee). I got my UID by being on slashdot ten years or so ago. I'm 59 years old and my synapses aren't as well oiled as they used to be.
My first computer was a slide rule. My second computer I built out of two potentiometers, a voltmeter, and a battery. When I was a teenager I made a little extra cash by converting cheap transistor radios into guitar fuzzboxes and selling them to friends.
These days it's fashionable to be a nerd, but I was a nerd back when we were pariahs.
Since Linux runs well on ARM, then I don't see what the big deal is about not being able to run legacy Windows apps in Win 8. All you'd have to do would be to install Linux dual-boot on your Windows 8 machine, and run your legacy Windows apps under Wine in Linux. Maybe I still need more coffee...
You forgot something in your post-- "GET OFF MY LAWN!!!"
in reality you'll forget your frustration in a year when you're looking to buy another graphics card--if Nvidia's top graphics card at the time outperforms AMD's graphics card by 15%, then you'll just get over it and buy the Nvidia one. It's happened to me a hundred times.
... but here in Vietnam we DO hear quite a bit about the rapid encroachment (and salinization) by the ocean into the Mekong delta. It is clear that with the ocean coming in (I seem to remember an encroachment figure of 1.4km/yr.) and that hundreds of thousands have already been displaced because they can no longer farm there. (This has driven the growth of the big cities which is where I live). The government is constantly projecting that millions more will move in the next few decades (This is from their Thanh Nhien News which is a pretty widely read paper, there's an English website you can visit).
Of course matters will soon be made even worse as upstream countries start damming the Mekong. (They may be doing so because the freshwater source in the Himalayas is losing its snowpack cover. This may also be due to climate change.)
Vietnam is supposedly one of the most susceptible countries to sea level rising but I can imagine things could be even worse in an even poorer (and closer to sea level) country like Bangladesh.
surely you can come up with some legitimate report of these 1.4km/year losses of property??? no???
you know I seem to recall hearing somewhere that the sky is actually orange

Here's a video that he tried to take down unsuccessfully.
that's nice but I don't care about that I would like to know why the UN said this in the first place if they knew that there weren't going to be climate refugees. I mean seriously, if it were coming true real estate would have fallen apart in those areas, which is wasn't. So it seems clear the UN had an agenda which they are now failing to hide and cover up.
mythical country you live in, haven't found any where it's actually that good. They put on a show and you get whisked away to the best doctors and get great care if you're in one of these countries as a traveler or rich person, but the majority of folk get pretty crappy care.
This will be a supremely unpopular stance among a large section here - but taxes are one of the best bargains in any marketplace.
most of the internet denizens over in the United States seem to be liberal, so I'm not sure why people here like to keep saying this. about 7 times out of 10 a pro-right comment has more "overrated" "troll" or "flamebait" moderations on it than a pro-left comment.
250 billion bits? That sounds as stupid as a republican opening her mouth !! Caps are ALWAYS given in bytes. Another hack without a clue is on the loose !! SAGA !!
The "adjustment" people talked about was just the first 15 minutes of the film being nonstop fast paced action. On IMAX, a moving stick across the screen jumps at least 5-6 feet per frame. That's why we need 48fps.
amount of content doesn't mean crap if you can't filter through it.
Netflix lets you watch any of 100 4/5 star rated comedies or 1000 3/5 star rated comedies when you feel like a comedy. Want action? Plenty of that. Romance for those lonely friday nights? Check. It's a pain to find new good stuff to watch. Rather just have it shoveled to be based on my previous ratings of films. And lets face it, who is going to pre-download a season of Hercules? How would I have found that if not to watch an episode on demand right now to laugh at, and then recognize "hey this is a pretty hilariously entertaining show"?
For $8/month it beats any and everything in my book. If you run linux, quit whining, pony up the one time fee of $50 and get a box that will play it.
the city prison I visited on field trip had cable TV. They could watch it all day as long as they didn't fight over it.

imagine that, you do something bad, and you get put somewhere you don't like.
The nerve of our society.
it's so much harder to wear a condom than have an abortion.
I'm simultaneously for and against this.
Schrödinger? Is that you?
I'd rather not know.
this is probably because his phone was rooted!!!!

uh, I know I and my friend were. I just want them to run at higher FPS in the action sequences, that's all, and then I'll be happy.
statistically better health care in most areas (look up infant mortality rates etc.).
that's easily done without demographic diversity, and is not a valid comparison for quality of healthcare.
Oh right and nevermind the other 85% of countries running socialized healthcare. Lol.

only 25% is foreign owned, the rest is domestically owned debt.

sir, your logic is flawless.
ahem.
stupid.
that's why they're splitting the film into hobbit 1 and hobbit 2.
BUT BUT BUT WE'RE IN A RECESSION &&& HAVE TO DEFICIT SPEND!!!
