  1. First? What about the African Prostitutes et.al.? on Man Cures Himself of HIV? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I'm sure I am not the only one that has seen documentries that include African prostitutes that have gathered a similar immunity to the virus. One of them was a Nova episode that aired on PBS last week (atleast I think it was last week). The women are exposed to the disease many times per day but seem unnafected by it. This sounds like a similar case for the following reasons:

    Article

The article states that 1) The prostitutes are completely void of the virus and 2) The trait is not genetic. Therefore I assume that the people contract the virus and their immune system then deals with it. In this man's case if the first test was done before his immune system kicked in and the second one after then this could explain the result.

P.S. I am not a doctor or in the medical field so I leave myself open to corrections. (and not just for my english ;0)

  3. Nvidia 3d=vid card+50$glasses=SAME TECHNOLOGY on IBM Develops New 3D TV Technology · · Score: 2, Informative

All Direct3d and OpenGL programs ALREADY have this ability. Nvidia has been doing this for years. It's built into they're drivers. All you need is to purchase a 50$ pair of 3d LCD Glasses (the same type described in the article) and download the '3d stereo' driver from their website and you're ready to go. Nvidia does it by rendering to two buffers at the hardware level (one for the perspective of each eye) and showing the buffers in succession. Say you have a monitor with 100hz refresh rate it just dumps one buffer on even frames and the other on odd frames. (note: the refresh rate is constant and not related to your fps).

This IS the same technology that IBM is talking about. The traditional problem with this is the refresh rates of projectors. Basically a refresh rate of 50~60hz is not enough to fool the eye without major strain. This is a limitation of the projector and not of any other hardware involved. So I don't know what IBM is relly talking about.

And an other thing! To have 3d VIDEO all you need is two 2d video streams from slightly different perspectives. Basically two regular cameras positioned beside eachother. By expensive they mean the price of 2 cameras instead of one. The hardest thing(and not very hard atall) is encoding a new codec that would encode both streams into one. kinda like stereo audio).

And yes, Half Life 2 is awesome with the glasses on. Especially when a projectile like a rpg or a rail gun type thing shoots at you. You can actually tell how far it is and what trajectory it's on.

Another downside (for me) is that it's too verbose. I'm used to short commands like 'cat' instead of something like 'get-contents'. And the .NET implementation just looks really ugly, IMHO.

FYI From what I can tell you can set any alias you want for a command, or download a file with all the *nix aliases you like that someone else has already written.

  5. Cellphone and Bluetooth on ePaper To Be Used For Newspapers and Magazines · · Score: 1

I agree, their view of the new technology is more narrow than its potential. I mean, why would you have paper at all if you could just have the single screen update with each page of the news paper or anything else. With the continuingly increasing power of cell phone technology the real application will be a single bluetooth enabled page that is controled by the phones buttons. You would be able to navigate page by page and content provider to content provider with the phone and just update the display over bluetooth. The tech is there right now and would be the best way to do it because the phone is connected to the internet. Bye bye paper! Cheers

  7. A compromise of security and privacy on Vein Patterns to Verify Identity · · Score: 1

For most biometric devices I see a clear invasion of privacy. For example fingerprint scanners can be used against you, retnal scans can be taken at a distance and DNA... is well, obvious. I think something that people have missed in the preceding discussion is that this type of biometric identification may have a much higher level of privacy involved. This type of scan cannot be detected after the fact and (as I understand it) cannot be scanned from afar. IMHO this could be a good comprimise of security and privace in terms of biometrics. Granted that the arguments about the reliability of the technology are valid IMHO cheers

I applaude the NDP's efforts but lets not get ahead of ourselves, they are the NDP. They have ~15 seats (not sure exactly the number) in a parlament with ~300! They dont have enough pull to move a chair, let alone get a bill passed. This is probably for political points with canada's left that are looking for a reason to not vote Liberal in the looming election. Ohwell... I'll probably have to start downloading music illigally soon. OhOh, but then it might be morally wrong! :-O Cheers
