I believe the intent is to prevent pedophile pedators from clandestinely communicating with potential underage prey.
It's an attempt to prevent people that have been convicted of a crime and paid their dues / served their time from participating in legal activities on the basis that they *might* commit the same crime with new victims.
Are car thieves prevented from owning/driving cars? Are bank robbers prevented from having bank accounts. Are rapist prevented from dating and/or getting married and/or having children? Nope, but as a sex offender, they can't play WoW - along with a whole bunch of other things they must do, like register themselves everywhere, avoid schools and parks, etc...
I understand that sex offenders have an unusually high recidivism rate and the laws are intended to "protect the children" (or others) but isn't this simply shifting the responsibility of parents to teach their children, and for the children themselves, to act safely and responsibly and for parents to monitor their children properly?
You know the financial industry gets away with the disclaimer, "Past performance is no guarantee of future results," and their failure rate is probably worse than the sex offender recidivism rate. But, I guess it's okay to ruin people financially, just don't show them your winky.
Being smart, gifted and/or talented, ("gifted" people often think differently than just "smart" people), doesn't automatically mean you'll be successful, but you can be happy none-the-less. There are plenty of perfectly happy "gifted" adults washing dishes or waiting tables at restaurants.
Disclaimer: Before she died in 2006, my wife was a Gifted Education teacher for 20 years, after being an English teacher for 20 years, and was one the Outstanding Gifted Education teachers of the year for Virginia in 2005. What I know about "Gifted" I learned from her, but I don't claim to know anywhere near what she knew or that I am, in fact, relaying things correctly - YMMV.
Manual skilled labor doesn't have too much to do IQ. The 'skilled' part, but not the manual labor part.
I would argue not the skilled part either, but rather how quickly/easily the skill was obtained and mastered. Even then, the individual person and skill probably matter too.
My wife was a Gifted Education and English teacher (before she died in 2006) and her school district recognizes several categories or areas of "Intelligences" for their students - Math, Music, etc... Gifted students/people often - but not always - have a high IQ or high measurable IQ if also dis/differently -abled and their IQ/Intelligence may only be in one or a few areas of interest, like Math or Music. The same is probably true for everyone.
In short, one IQ number / measurement is probably insufficient as a true, complete indicator of everything.
... the bottom line is the whole concept of IQ — or of you having a higher IQ than me — is a myth,' said Dr. Adrian Owen, the study’s senior investigator.
You sound a little bitter there Dr. Owen - if that's your real title!
[ Many people probably have a higher IQ than you; get over it.:-) ]
Wasn't saying he was wrong, just dead. Jesus' current credit score is probably crap too, because, you know, he's dead.:-)
On a personal note, I am currently debt free and don't lend money to anyone. I have given about $60K to friends in need over the last 7 years (since my wife died in Jan 2006), but always as a gift w/o any expectations. Friendships seem to work out better that way.
Data collected automatically from some Windows users
Oh, that gives me such a warm feeling inside...
Feel this.
If it works like on Windows 7, the data is collected automatically, every day/week, regardless of whether you participate in the "customer experience improvement program". It's just not uploaded if you decline. Check the Scheduled Tasks and you'll find several scheduled to run every day/week to collected data and some to upload the data (if you opt-in) - look for "Customer Experience". I've manually disabled all those tasks on my Windows 7 systems - just to be sure, and save some CPU cycles and disk space.
Windows 8 and Server 2012 are far from "enterprise" they are basically toys.
Agreed. It seems the purpose of Windows 8 is to provide a consumer-oriented environment conducive to buying content such as music, movies, books, etc like on the iPad and other tablets and smartphones. To date, the only things I've seen people doing with Windows 8 systems in commercials is playing movies, games, finger painting, Skype, "clicking, clicking, clicking," sliding and (often angry) dancing. No one's using the thing for any actual work...
I don't own either type of device - e-reader or tablet - but imagine that e-readers offer a simpler experience for the user - no/fewer software and security updates, etc - and that will always appeal to various consumers. Tablets are more powerful and capable, but also more complex.
What I want is the ten inch paper white touch screen at a reasonable price ($200 - $300 or so)
I also want the weight to be somewhat less than my ipad3.
I also want my kindle to support epub without having to do crazy side loading.
I don't use the kindle that much because it really is only useful for reading on the train and such, which I don't do that often.
As a pedestrian, I think it's fair to trade off a few more rear-end collisions for better pedestrian safety.
Or smarter/more aware pedestrians. Seriously, while it's a given that motorists have a responsibility to be mindful of pedestrians, if you're not *also* being pro-active as a pedestrian, watching the traffic to ensure that you're not going to get run over, then you're even more irresponsible and probably a future Darwin Award winner. Just sayin'...
I say this as a bicyclist who was once, many years ago, hit by a car at an intersection, even though I had the right-of-way. I had even looked directly at the driver as I approached and he looked at me, then he pulled out anyway. I ended up on the hood of his car glaring at him with my best "WTF" look and he looked *really* surprised - like I came out of nowhere. Luckily, I wasn't hurt, got off his car and he drove off. I'm a better, more alert, bicyclist - and pedestrian - because of this and hope he's a better driver.

I have another post in this thread with a few related links if you're interested: http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3328079&cid=42342845
never heard that one before? i quite like it.
I heard Aeryn Sun exclaim "Frell me dead!", but I'm sure she was talking about something else... :-)

Do what you love, love what you do - people too.
Life's too short and can end abruptly, w/o any warning - I know.
Read the book Gifted Grownups (it's available at Amazon) or research Intellectual Giftedness or Gifted and Talented.

This, along with credit card companies raising your rate after you borrow a lot because you're "riskier"
How does that affect people who follow Dave Ramsey's advice not to borrow?
Or even people who follow Polonius from Hamlet ?
Getting killed by Hamlet? Probably not good for the FICO score...
pay a lot of money to someone to produce a report that looks like they did something science-y
The TSA thought about getting the Mythbusters to do the study, but decided they needed people with less integrity, ethics and skill ...

You see, you can claim to want a gun for self defense but how many do you need?
What did she need that arsenal for? Why so much ammo?
So, it could have been much worse...

this gunman should be burned at the stake cause lethal injection is two good for him
He's already dead Jim.
I have an IBM Model M keyboard with a 5lb steel plate on the bottom. Most assuredly I can kill someone with a computer.
Sure, sure - of course. But you're going to get *really* tired out trying to kill 27 people all at one time...
Didn't you know? Guns don't kill people, people kill people.
Actually, it's the bullets that kill people.
The Second Amendment says people have the right to bear arms, but it says nothing about ammunition ...
The group ... reiterated its demands: that a controversial YouTube video mocking the prophet Mohammed "be eliminated from the Internet."
And these idiots think the banks are responsible and/or control the Internet and its content? - sigh
