I think they should just use the post office to conduct the census.
The census is conducted by mail. The census workers are there (among other reasons) to contact people don't return the mail-in form by the cutoff date...
Fron TFA: They would use the computers to collect and transmit information from residents who failed to return the census forms mailed out by the government.
When Windows 7 launches sometime after the start of 2010, the desktop OS will be Microsoft's most 'modular' operating system to date.
In 2010, the EU rules Windows still not modular enough, tells Microsoft, "All these desktops are yours, except Europe. Attempt no installations there."
Ha, I've got a system running NT 4.0 SP6a -- SE440BX-2 MB, 450 MHz PII w/384 MB RAM and 2 4.5-GB F/W SCSI disks. Been running (almost) 24/7 since 12/1998. Runs like a champ.
From TFA: Each chip would be able to communicate directly with every other chip via a beam of laser that could carry billions of bits of data a second.
I do have an unhealthy obsession with my Roomba, but it doesn't come close to the religious outrage that descends on my blog whenever / if-ever I say anything that doesn't approach worship of Apple.
Just wait until Apple starts making the iRoomba...
Oh for the love of all that is good in this world, are you going to let THAT bother you?
I don't want to inject too much seriousness, but... It's amazing how the little things can bother people. Perhaps we're all spoiled or just have no control over the big things, so the little things seem important.
Though I'd like to think I was/am not this bad, I learned a lesson two years ago when my wife died of a brain tumor. Twenty years together ended in just seven weeks (diagnosis to death). We did almost everything together over the years and I spent almost every moment with her over her final weeks both in the hospital and at home. I took care of her and gave her the meds 4 and 6 times a day (even the IV meds). I was there 24/7 the last week when she was in a coma, even sleeping next to her in the 8 inches between her and the railing.
That said, Lisp & Prolog were my most favorite and least practical languages I've learned.
Yes, but they're wonderful research languages. I did work on automated programming techniques using abstract data types in LISP (on a Xerox LISP workstation) and n-version fault tolerant programming in PROLOG - both way back in 1985-87. I'd love to get back to using LISP... Still have my InterLISP-D manual too.:-)
The Army's $10 million grant proposal calls for the bat to be six inches in length, weigh four ounces and use just one watt of power. The bat is supposed to be powered by a lithium-ion battery, charged by solar and wind energy, as well as simple vibrations.
Those wacky Army guys. Hell the battery and recharging equipment will weigh more that 4 oz -- especially if powering surveillance *and* flight components.
Wouldn't it just be easier and cheaper to mount the equipment on actual trained bats and let them eat insects? As a bonus, the Guano could be used for munitions - Mmmm Guano...
Personally, I think they're pursuing this project so they can tell people they work in the Bat Cave.
Career Counselor: What do you wanna do with your life? Tell me your dreams!"
Student: I wanna be an astronaut! And go into outer space and discover things that no one's ever discovered before!
Counselor: Look, you're British, so scale it down a bit.
Student: All right, then I wanna work in a shoestore! And discover shoes that no-one's ever discovered! Right at the back of the shop on the left...
Counselor: Look, you're British, so scale it down a bit!
Student: All right, then I wanna work in a sewer. And discover sewage that no-one's ever discovered before. I'll pile it on my head, then come to the surface and sell myself to an art gallery.
Counselor: What the fuck have you been smoking, eh?
I'm just going to interject to say that if your career started 20 years ago than college was a heck of a lot cheaper when you worked your way through.
True, but *everything*, including salaries, was a lot lower as well.
I was fortunate in that I was interested in unusual courses, like LISP and Prolog. This allowed me to get an undergraduate research position studying "automated programming techniques" in LISP. They actually wanted a graduate student, but I was the only one with the requsite programming skills. I guess chance favors the prepared. The job paid $9.50 / hour - in 1985 - but I worked my ass off for that dough -- mostly 3am as LISP development was limited during the day on our VAX 785 running 4.3 BSD.
Give me a break you old piece of shit. Everyone who says 'nobody gave me anything' and 'I worked my way up' is almost certainly lying their arse off. You also seem to think you know what experience I have but clearly you don't. I don't think it is that you aren't aware of the problems facing young people these days, you just don't care. All you care about is getting your own taxes down at the expense of those just started out. You are probably too stupid to compete on intellectual merit, so you and your ilk promote a system where young talented people can never get anywhere to threaten your cushy jobs. Cunt.
Not to belabor this, but...
I'm not that old; just turning 45.
I *did* work my way up from almost nothing and had two jobs through college. I did get student loans, but paid them off myself.
True, I don't know what experience you have, but it almost doesn't matter at this point because of your attitude.
I do know what problems younger people face as my wife was a teacher and I work with and mentor several younger colleagues fresh from school.
I'm a Democrat and don't mind paying tases, I just don't like my tax money wasted (like on the war).
Calling me stupid is silly as *you* don't know me or my skills and experience. Perhaps I'm an "talented" person too, just not as young as you.
Why should I get out of your way when you haven't proven that you deserve anything.
Of course, now all you old fucks have no more need of public education... You simply don't want to pay now for the things you were given to help you out when you were young....I don't hold out much chance of getting away from selfish middle-aged wankers any time soon.
Yawn. I worked my way through college with several jobs. No one gave me anything. I started at the bottom, and now have 20+ years of SA and programming experience on everything from Crays to PCs. Sure I now make really good money and set my own hours, but I EARNED it.
So, suck it up and write back when you have some actual, useful experience instead of being a whiny young brat who wants the brass ring NOW 'cause you took a class and have "skilz".
Brooks logged in and found over 1,700 emails all with user account information... he deleted the emails, changed the account password, and notified Google.
Now watch this guy get arrested on either a DMCA or Network Intrusion charge for "doing the right thing" in 3... 2... 1...
No one in their right mind, or otherwise, would blow up a Macbook Air. The cost of the unit not withstanding, do you know how hard it would be to get replacement parts, or service, for that thing after that? Not cool. Plus, I think it would void the warranty. And we all know what dicks Apple can be about that -- especially the the incendiary device wasn't official factory-installed Apple gear.
Nope, it'd be way easier to get a Dell or Sony unit and simply trick out the standard battery.
Those sound familiar, but I can't be sure - don't have anyone's thighs wrapped around my head at the moment...
My younger brother liked to take his apart and reassemble with one piece reversed, which (apparently) made it unsolvable. Drove people nuts.
Well hey, lets just get rid of microwave ovens, radio stations, television signals and police radios.
In fact this technology seems so dangerous I think we should just go back to living in caves.

Dear Commerce Department, See: Why OldTech Keeps Kicking
Also true, but merging the result set is problematic.

Do not look at chip with remaining good eye.
Like "Apple" :-)
[Man, oh man, now I'm going to hell...]

Even now, I remember everything.
The little things don't bother me anymore.

I'm predicting "NoScript 2.0" :-)
I think I'm in love... :-)
To bad Guinevere is taken.

I *knew* there was another bit with a ladder, but couldn't recall it. It's been bugging me all night. Thanks! Time to get out the DVD....
