Why does this surprises us at all? It was a bit obvious that the switch had to do more with money (since IBM didn't want to lower their prices for Apple) than by the mere ideology of which processor Apple feel is better. Hello, wake up.

Really comparing Linux vs Mac OS X is very much pointless... Now, Darwin (XNU) vs Linux would be more interesting... especially Darwin running Xorg and KDE (or GNOME) vs Linux running Xorg running KDE (or GNOME)... that would be more fair, I believe.

This type of problem would have been likely to happen in just about any other unpatched operating system... be it UNIX or not UNIX, it would' have not made any difference whatsoever.

Well it depends very much on which way you wish to look at it. if you want to count which is the Operating System that most servers use, then yes, it's fundamentally flawed. But in the other hand, if you want to see which operating system people prefer when it comes to their websites decissions, etc... it pretty much serves the purpose.

Apple's XNU (Darwin), is simply superior in many ways. With the OS X kernel you simply get the best of both worlds, the best things of a monolithic BSD kernel, while a lot of advance features of the Mach microkernel.

Apple's XNU is the way kernels will be in the future. The future is Hybrid kernels. Stop arguing.

What's the matter here? I'm seeing a lot of Slashdotters arguing whether this statistics are worthless because it represents the users of that particular website. But it's almost certain that when the statistics exceed the 10 thousand surveyed users it pretty much represent a whole community (That's why they are statistics!) And it represents it more, since it's a desktop Linux website, it doesn't represent a particular window environment. I don't understand why all the whining. People get mad when what they use "isn't winning". NEWSFLASH: Shut the fuck up, take a Xanax and relax pal, this is not a race, and it is merely a survey. Be happy, the overall growth that they show is good; it means more people have adopted Linux in their desktop.

And having more bus doesn't automatically make a processor faster either. The Motorola G4 (and PowerPC in general), gives me more performance per CPU cycle, than _any_ x86 CPU. Oh, and above all, their quality and efficiency is something you will never find on any x86 processor... well perhaps, on the VIA CPU's. :)

Yes, it's good, that they teach you how to protect yourself, but giving this information is as good as if they give you a gun and try to teach you how to use a gun "ethically". Some people will actually serve the purpose of the program, while others simply will not.

Like I said, theoretically speaking, it's OK. Practically speaking, it will fail their purpose.
