He can be considered lower middle class if he is supporting a wife who doesn't work and a couple of children, depending on how expensive the cost of living is in the area of course.
If he's single an making 60K, then that's a different story.
The IT Crowd is hilarious. Perhaps you don't appreciate British humor? Not everyone is into it, and this show is full of it. I know many people who love the US version of The Office, but hate the original British version.
The very short article consisted of Berners-Lee saying that male geeks act stupid, and that causes women to not want to enter the field. It would be nice to have some examples of this so-called stupid behavior. You're always going to have idiots, both male and female. I don't think this is the rule.
I work as a software developer, and being male I am the minority. We have 3 men and 7 women on my team, and none of us act stupid. I would say most teams here have at least 50% women.
This sounds like ranting that has no factual basis what-so-ever. Don't bother reading the article, it contains no more info than what is contained in the summary.
I regularly have days that I either don't answer the cell phone. I also don't drop everything I am currently doing every time the cell phone rings. However, I now have the reputation of "never answering my cell phone." I am the geek amongst my friends, yet I also get made fun of for my attempts to not be ruled by my devices.
I don't think "true blue" geeks are the only, or even the biggest offenders, of sacrificing social life for tech... more often than not I'm sitting at the bar and I'll be the only one not texting.
I also do the most things outdoors - I do lot's of backpacking/camping/cycling yet it's like pulling teeth trying to get my "non-geek" friends to join me in these activities.
I agree. Except for the price and Word, I actually really like Microsoft's office suite. I would love word too if it didn't insist on telling me how my documents should be formated instead of doing what I tell it to, but oh well.
As an aside, does anyone know of a good resource on how to make MS Word behave?
LIcenses, contracts, or whatever you sign or agree to go out the window if the contents of the agreement is illegal.
I'd say that running code on your machine without your permission and knowledge consitutes the digital equivalent of trespassing and vandalism, and should be punished as such.
My personal boycott is due to their overly high prices on used games. I am not a big console gamer, but enjoy the occasional ps2 title. I go in and still find titles 3+ years old selling for more than $20 used. Seems a bit ridiculous to me, seeing that if one were to try to sell said games to gamestop they'd get about $5.00 for it.
Read tfa... Just mistyped since I live in the US, google is based in the US, so naturally the first thing I think of is the US when posting google-related comments.
I sincerely apologize to the slashdot crowd for my mistyping, it was due to lack of coffee resulting in a low blood-caffeine content this morning.
I need to remind myself to not go for the +1 funnies when the/. crowd is cranky...
What needs to happen is for the government to have a serious look on whether the electoral college voting system is still needed today. Remember, Gore won the popular vote in 2000. With the electoral college system, living in a state that gets a low amount of votes (like Rhode Island) lowers the power of your own vote.
I think it's about time to do away with the electoral college and just go strictly by the popular vote.
I think what needs to happen is that the law, and punishment, need to focus on the actual damages done to the content owner, and not just a blanket law for all "copyright infringers."
Are the movie studios going to lose one dime because of this girls recording? Nope. It can be argued that they wouldn't lose anything if she recorded the entire movie. The quality will be crap, and who would really want to sit through watching a shaky camera-recorded copy anyway?
This is a slippery slope... what if I am at a friend's house videotaping, and they happen to have a dvd movie playing and 20 seconds of it is shown in the scene (like in the background or something). Will I go to jail for a year?
Bah... I'm willing to cancel out my MOD points to make this comment.
SysAdmin Appreciation Day is a way for ThinkGeek.com to boost their sales for the year. I'm willing to bet that the summer months are a slump for them, as is the same for most retailers. Nov-Jan is christmas, Feb is valentines... after that the retail buying frenzy is back down to normal levels. This is non-holiday is always in July.
Hallmark does the same thing... I live in Michigan and we have "Sweetest Day" in September (or October, can't remember). It's basically Valentine's Day round 2...
Sorry, but I'm just full of conspiracy theories today!
Why use an algorithm? Can't it just pick a number from X to Y?
Because all a computer can do is run an algorithm. Think about it, how do you instruct a computer to "pick a number." It has to follow a sequence of instructions, and because of this it cannot generate truly random numbers.
From a math perspective, all modern computers are based on the Turing Machine model of computation. If you look up how a turing machine works, you can quickly see that it is impossible for it to generate random sequences. A turing machine is by nature deterministic. There is the concept of a non-deterministic turing machines, but these are proven equivalent to deterministic ones.
Most common random number generators work by having a predefined list of numbers, and you seed the generator. The seed determines where in the sequence you start pulling numbers out. When seeding with something such as the process ID or current time you can get pretty close to random numbers.
It's fair in that the price is closer to the fair market price, not what a person is willing to pay for it. I'm not saying the system is perfect, because it is most certainly not.
Most people on ebay do buy at a higher price and sell at a lower one. It's called "sell off your old crap cuz it's taking up too much space." Do you sell items at a garage sale higher than the purchase price? Didn't think so.
Those ebayers who have their own "online store" sell at prices comparable to any other online retailer.
Perhaps the whole problem is that companies expect^H^H^H^H^H believe it is their right to make billions. Maybe profits are way too skewed towards the big corporate players that a totally free market is needed to put balance in the system. If someone wants to sell a comparable product at a fraction of the cost, so be it. Leave the courts out of it.
Not exactly. Auctions that follow the Vickrey auction scenario are much closer to the "right" market price. Basically, everyone posts a secret bid, and the person who bids the highest wins, paying the price of the second highest bid. I've read numerous studies (too lazy to link to them) that conclude the Vickrey auction to set a much fairer and true price than traditional auctions.
Does Microsoft intend to pay each of their users to act as little personal ad servers? Seriously, if MS is wasting cycles on my CPU indexing my data for keywords so they can show me some ads, I want to be paid for that CPU time. It's not their hardware.
If this comes to fruition, I am never using another MS product again. I will deal with not being able to play my favorite games, it will be well worth it.
For one, the option to have google desktop upload data to their servers is turned off by default, and you have to click OK to a pretty straightforward message regarding how your data is going to be used if you turn it on.
Google desktop won't break windows if you uninstall it.
Asps... very dangerous. You go first.

Or they can go by way of Metroid and we'll find out Master Chief is female...

I am so glad you are not my dad.

So, no, it's not the same.
