My observation is that in France ghetto forming processes have not been disrupted in the past. However, there might be new initiatives which try to achieve smaller city structures which result in a better mixture of groups with low and middle income. This could be used in way so that kids in school have classmates from different cultures including the host culture.
To your point where to draw the line. This line has not been moved by these acts of terror. The key cornerstones of the age of enlightenment are freedom, equality, and fraternalism, which means we can wear what we want, say what we want, and go to school, even if kids sometimes don't want.
I don't live in France, I live in Germany. I cannot assume that the situation is identical to France, but from my point of view we have already a majority of immigrants which are conservative, but not in opposition to general freedom rights. however, they have views in context of women, homosexuals etc. which are similar to classic German conservatives. So these conservative groups only need to progress from 1950s to the 21st century.
To prevent terrorism two major things must happen. First, we have a large and complex inner Islamic process going on in the Middle East which has similarities to the 30 year war in Europe, but of course the context and environment is different so we cannot assume that it will result in an equal development. In that area we need to support those who propose an open Islam without harming their reputation, which is difficult, as we largely do not understand the involved cultures (yes there is more than one).
Second, we have people living in Europe who convert to radical Islam. They just arrested two of them in Germany. One of them with a "normal" German background. The real problem is that young people without an perspective for life are vulnerable to radical ideas. We had our share of terrorists in Germany, e.g. Rote Armee Fraktion (RAF), which came from a peaceful background, but radicalized. One main problem at that time was the lack of communication between the elites and parts of the populations which had big issues with the direction of politics, as they where observed to be antisocial.
There are parallels to the radicalization process of young Europeans who are also outcasts or at least feel that way. In Germany they join either Nazi-like groups which has also resulted in terrorism by the NSU in Germany with multiple attacks on society (however, police did not recognize them as racist attacks for 10 years), they get in contact with radical Islam, or (however this is a very small group and they only tend to destroy cars and railway equipment) they become left wing extremists.
So my proposal is to address the issues these young people have with their acceptance into society and their crushed egos. this can be achieved through social workers who have direct contact the those people on the streets (not in an fancy office) combined with programs to help them succeed. Also we have to work on the bias of many teachers and company owners who dismiss job applications with foreign sounding names only on the basis of these names. Study have shown that there is indeed a big bias there in Germany. Especially in smaller companies.
What is obviously not an option is adapting a society like in Saudi Arabia. Iranian immigrants in Germany would not like such an development, nor those people fleeing from Boko Haram.
However, to solve our problems we also need patience. A lot of patience. And we should not freak out over every attack. Look at the Spanish how they acted on the attacks on their trains 10 years ago. They cleanup the mess and used the trains the same way. No extra laws were established. If you want to defend human rights (all of them not only freedom) then you have to live be them and discuss them with everyone. It is definitely not an option to diminish them.
True. If they could blow one up. You could prevent this by shutting them down. You could start with Fessenheim, as it has enough malfunctions already without any sabotage.;-) You could also try to switch from nuclear to regenerative sources, like Denmark or Germany. Even if that sounds ridiculous.
However, I do not think that their potential attack vectors would result in a Chernobyl like accident. It would be more like Fokushima. And if you do not mess up. It could be even cleaner.
However, if Islamic terror would blow up one nuclear plant in the EU. They would encounter real bad press around the globe weakening their position. Even in their home countries. Because presently their actions are labeled retaliations for western attacks. Mass murdering and polluting the planet is what they say we do. When they start doing the same thing. People will move away from them.
If you think that these figures are correct then we should the hell start talking to the people. Killing will not solve the problem. In contrary it will increase these numbers. Also it states that in France 84% of Muslims reject the views of IS.
For the UK, I recently heard a discussion in Deutschlandfunk about Islam and Sharia. According to different imams and theologians there are different kinds of Sharia and they differ greatly. If the telegraph asked Muslims do you want Sharia law in the UK then the conservative Muslims would most likely say yes as they want to keep their behaviors and culture. Anyway, it means that 60% decline Sharia.
But same as in France. Lets start really talking and listening to these people. We messed up with integration so far, as we put these people in ghettos. Now it is time to fix it.
I make an analogy so that you can understand what kind of difference that is. Yes you have to go back in time for such things in Christianity. You do not have to go that far back on the topic of racism. While a certain amount of being proud of your own nation is ok, it can also be something like in Nazi Germany, pre WW2 Japan, Franco Spain, etc. My point is about the difference and distance between the believes both groups. My statement is not about Christianity today or anything of that dip shit.
It is possible to revert such ghetto structures. It has been done in Germany (in a few places). However, we should prevent the development of such structures. In Paris that would mean that the Banlieues must be restructured and developed. Furthermore, local activities to foster integration (which implies make a whole society out of different parts) must be supported by activities in other world regions where our present economic targets hamper local development.
BTW: There is a war going on inside Muslim cultures similar, but not identical, to the 30 years war in Europe. What we see in France or Spain are only minor incidents compared to what happens in their own domain.
Islam as such is not incompatible with our "Greek-based" culture of enlightenment. However, it requires the transformation of Islam form an ideology to an religion. The majority of Muslims in Germany made that transition to some extend, while others especially young people fall victim to hate ideologies. For "native" Germans that are racist groups and for immigrants it is fanatic Islamism. If we are able to give people an perspective, a real perspective not one on paper, then they will not go down that road.
You should learn to distinguish between Islam, the religion, and their followers called Muslims, and Islam, the ideology, and the Islamists. It is the same different as between normal Christians and those who burn people on crosses. If you are unable to differentiate then you are either frightened by Islam which means you should investigate that religion (not to convert necessarily, but to understand), or you are just a racist moron, then you should reflect on that and try to understand why you started with that strange believe.
No it is not. However, most people are unable to distinguish between islamists, islamistic terrorists and normal muslims. While the first and second make and ideology out of their religion, the third (most muslims) do not. If you want to fight the problem then you have first to understand the problem. The problem is that people become fanatics and try to use force to push their ideology onto you. So why do people become fanatics? We had our share of fanatics in Europe in context of different ideologies. For example, the Red Army Fraction (RAF) in Germany and Basque terrorists. The RAF was fought with police methods and their support was diminished by starting a dialog with those people who sympathized with them. Resulting in an integration and dialog. If this dialog had been established in the beginning , the radicalization would not have taken place at all. Most of those terrorists where from religious (Christian) background and loved peace. However, they felt that the system was oppressive and must be overthrown. The felt helpless and radicalized. We know from research that similar processes cause radicalization of people into islamists. War is never a good solution, if you want to reduce violence.
There is no F******G war going on. 20 people where killed, 17 by terrorists. We have a problem with equality and participation and integration in Europe. However, we are not on war with a part of our own population. And while 17 dead people is horrible, we have more dead people in traffic related accidents 3250 per year or smoke or germs in hospitals everyday. So get that in perspective. Yes we have to address terrorism. We have to do this with police work and social work and a good integration strategy which does not put immigrants in ghettos and throw away the keys.
Fighting local terror is a police task. They are trained for that. They normally don't shoot people, they try to apprehend them. It would be a total disaster if we would think that we are on war with something. True the US is at war with all number of problems, like drugs, terror, violence you name it, but that is not a solving strategy. Beside the will of "security people" we should fight terrorists with good police work and we should address the core issues which trigger people to become terrorists. One key ingredient for radicalization (which is a requirement to become a terrorist of any kind) is a feeling of powerlessness and the feeling of lack of communication. The latter includes that nobody really listens to you. It is not enough when you are allowed to post or say anything, as long as no one is really engaging in a personal discussion (not debate) then there is no real communication in terms of the problems the people have. Also people get frustrated and angry, because what ever they do they are not getting anywhere. For instance in Germany or France it is harder to get an apprenticeship training position if you have a foreign name, especially if it sounds Turkish or Arabic. It is worse with small companies than with bigger ones and it is worse if you are male. In addition your school grades are similar effected (males) when you have a foreign name or if you have a name which is typical associated with low income (e.g. Kevin in Germany).
I will always express my views and will not shut up. And I don't have a car, as it would serve no purpose living in a town with 250 000 inhabitants. However, it sucks big time when people use the pedestrian way and bicycle roads as parking space all week.
BTW visit Copenhagen if you think cars are the only proper solution to traffic problems. And you are also a central planner as you request that cities are layed out for cars only.
Wouldn't it be best to reduce oil consumption quickly by replacing SUVs with fuel efficient cars. City cars with busses, mass transit, and electric cars, and long distance freight transportation from trucks to trains, which could ultimatively run on electricity too.
In addition we could sell the tech to the Chinese. Of course this will only work with renewable energy sources.
According to most comments here, the (I assume) US police force is not trying to solve crimes by collecting evidence, but instead they are only trying to get a maximum of convictions. If so, I wonder why there are no protests about it. The police force is part of the executive of a state. They are necessary to ensure the monopoly of power in the state and represent one pillar of a modern free democracy. They must adhere the law (even if it sucks), but they must not try to impress statistically. That would be a real considerable bias. Even in a police state you try to direct the suppression towards criminals and people who oppose the government, but the accusations here point to random (may be race biased) behavior. That would imply a broken system. So can someone explain why there are no demonstrations? Every day? Until the government fixes the situation? In the US, I heard, can elect the sheriff of their city. In that case it would be possible to elect someone who wants to fix it.
"one of the biggest problems in American democracy: low voter turnout." which is translated in the post to it is too hard to vote so people don't vote. However, this is a misconception. People don't vote because it has no purpose for them. They do not think that they are participating in a process which has any effect on politics. Therefore, the key problem is to ensure that every vote counts in a sense that it has effect on public policies.
Furthermore, the key problem is not only to guarantee that every vote is counted as intended, but also to be able to verify this vote and vote counting by everyone. Every time where a computer is the only thing that counts, the count can be corrupted. To do the same with paper and crosses on papers is much harder and easier to figure out.
Use a desktop at the office with all the bells and whistles you need. And have a second device when on the run. You can sync both via the source repositories you are using.
Furthermore, the setup will teach you not to frickle together your build system. And the desktop PC environment can be better. adjusted to ergonomic requirement. Also adding 2 or 3 monitors is easy.
The car is a technology demonstrator. However, they plan to sell fuel-cell cars in 2017 and Toyota wants to sell them 2020. Depending on the availability of hydrogen filling stations this technology could be near you in a decade. The interesting thing of the concept car is that they combined hydrogen fuel-cell and batteries allowing to bridge the gap between hydrogen filling stations with the battery. In addition they had their self driving technology already integrated in a normal E or S class car which is able to drive around on some roads in Germany.
Concept cars are there to show (and show off) what is technological possible. Normally the same technology ends up in the real thing.
While you are right about the origin of the name from "Nationalsozialisten" it is still a noun according to the German language standard (see http://www.duden.de/suchen/dud...). On a second note: They claimed to be socialists, but there was nothing social what they did. While they started many expensive building programs to bring people into jobs, this was a) already planned by previous governments and b) a "Keynes" like action to boost economy in an capitalistic way. They also cooperated with the heavy industry in Germany.
A key feature of socialism (on paper) is that all humans are equal. As history has shown that does not work in a dictatorship. And it does not work with racism.
I do not believe that she is only a puppet. She is doing her job too well. However, she is a friend of Friede Springer (a German news corporation) which has in its charter to be anti communist and to foster the bonds towards the US. Merkel has perfectly understood how to stay in power in a democracy when backed by media and other influential figures of the upper class/global elite. However, she is not a democrat of her own. She is also not interested in the idea of a united Europe. She is more interested in free trade, as this suits herself and her cast. She also only opposed Cameron when he was against open borders, as this would hinder free movement of the poor people and be anti-neoliberal.
BTW: Cameron only promised a vote on EU membership, as straight conservatives in his party and UKIP required that from him. And in Germany votes on such topics are not expressed in the constitution, because when the constitution was written, allies and German politicians did not trust the population enough to give the people so much power.
First, Nazi is a noun not an acronym. Second, the Euro is controlled by the ECB where the Bundesbank has only one vote. It is led by an Italian. However, Merkel is a neoliberal politician fueled by a strategy based on demobilizing the opposition. Key is her phrase of "no alternatives". Her goal is similar to other neoliberals like Cameron to reduce state influnce as much as possible. If you feel conquered its by the world upper class.
There is so much wrong at that assumption, I wonder why this was posted at all. On second thought, this is slashdot.
Anyway, his premises are all wrong. For example, the tele presence thing. If we can built robots so we can do our work somewhere else then these robots can do simple labor by themselves without being a tele presence device. Tele presence would also require a lot of energy and a lot of resources. To be a truly replacement a large quantity of those devices are needed. In addition, there are already people everywhere on the globe. Why not let those people do the job who are there? With capitalism this will also not work, as a tele presence device + a human is always more expensive than a human alone. For caring jobs such devices would not work, as humans require humans. For brain jobs, we already have tele presence in form of Internet video conferences. Even if we would have machines for tele presence or goggles it is not the same as with humans. I know many technology freaks do not understand that fact and therefore they deny it. However, human interaction is very important.
Working remotely is not widespread. We in the tech industry and science do it. However, we still have personal meetings. And this is not going away, as see above.
The money things is also very strange. I live in the EU. We have this Euro currency. However, I still feel the same way about my origin (Swabian, German, European) as before they introduced the Euro. It is just money. An money is good for paying things, but it is not part of my identity. When they revoked the German Mark, many people thought the Germans would freak out, as it is the center piece of their reality. The truth is most do not bother today.
Your cultural context is based on what you eat and drink, what customs you have, what celebrations you have, and it is not a logical formula with a set of criteria. Nation is a feeling, just as to be a local patriot to your town, school, football/soccer club.
And I am absolutely sure that I will speak German and English (to some extend) also in future. Maybe I am able to learn Spanish or Portuguese or Chinese. However, that will not blur where I am from, where I think I belong to. Even so, nation is a construction form the age of the enlightenment.
A yes. And in recent years I have the distinct feeling that there is a lot of re-nationalization going on in Europe. Look at the Scottish, Catalans, North Italy, the UK itself and many more. The true boundary distructor is capitalism with its idea of globalization. It causes rasistic tendencies to rise in many countries coupled with hate against religions. Technology cannot fix that. If you want to fix that you must change the effects of globalization. He thinks technology is the solution to all problems, mistaking the tool they are for the solution. The solution to our problems are based on social processes including politics.
How innovative of you. On the same "we are used to it" basis nobody would have bought a car, because horseless carriages are also only new and we are not used to them. However, this is all beside the point. You can stay with your historic measurement units, but when writing news for an international auditorium it is a good idea to use metric measures otherwise they all have to calculate the flipping values for themselves just because the author was too lazy or too arrogant or both which perfectly supports the image of the US outside the US. Maybe you want to change that and acknowledge that there are other cultures and people outside of the US bubble.
According to wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F... Fahrenheit is used in the Bahamas, Belize, the Cayman Islands, Palau, and the United States and its associated territories of American Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands (except Puerto Rico and Guam, with the former predominantely using Celsius and the latter equally using Celsius and Fahrenheit). Canada retains it as a supplementary scale that can be used alongside Celsius.
True in the UK, they also "use" it unofficially which does not stop them to post it also in Celcius.
This still results in almost everyone uses Celcius while the US and some other minor territories use Fahrenheit. With approx 7 billion people on earth and only 0.4-0.5 billion Fahrenheit users make this a 13:1 - 16.5:1 relation. We have been told that the US is an innovative country so why are they not able to switch to or at least acknowledge that the metric system is everywhere else. One acknowledgement would be on an international website to use (at least) both scales.
Obviously I am able to translate Fahrenheit in Celcius. However, it is an extra effort everyone has to do who lives not in the US. Therefore, it would be more helpful to the readers if the authors could just make that translation. If it takes only 5 min for Fahrenheit it could not be that much more difficult to go in the other direction. On a side note: 6.5 billion people live in a metric/celcius world and only 0.5 billions (or less) live in a body parts/Fahrenheit world. This is 13:1 if you need it in a relation.
Honestly, 20ÂC (68F) in normal lifing space and 16/18ÂC (60/64.4F) for the bedroom are already communicated for decades as a good environment. So what is new?
On a side note: I know Slashdot is an US based site. However, Fahrenheit is only used in the US and some territories where you go for holidays. Is it so impossible to at least add the celcius values in brackets?
There is some truth in what you say. Airport security is and will always be not perfect, as it is not possible to realize total security, as long as objects (people and luggage) are allowed to get on board. However, real police officers would be better at the job. They are carefully selected and get years of training before they are policemen (maybe this is different in the US, I don't know.). They are better paid (even though I think they do not get enough for the task they have to perform) and they cannot be pushed around like those rent-a-cop people at the airport. Their only obligation is to do their job right.
On the other side, the private companies try to make a fortune and they must compete with each other. Therefore, they try to become cheaper. In that business this is only possible by buying cheaper equipment, but there are limits to that as minimal standards are applied in that area. Therefore, the only option is in pay and training. The result is obvious.
No. The genes are already present. They only get activated when you exercise. Therefore, you should leave your basement and walk or run around your block for 45 minutes a day or alternatively walk or cycle to the pizza or Chinese place instead of delivery any you have the same improvement. However, if you do not desire a healthy and long life, and a more optimistic view on the world then please don't do it.

If you pay peanuts you get monkey.
