    Well, if you chose to selective in the things that you use to measure inflation, then of course you get some interesting numbers. However, you can also run the numbers using say.... electronics and get a set of completely different numbers. This is why economists don't just use a few numbers to measure inflation, they use them all. And according to the inflation rate, then income is well ahead of inflation.

    Well, for one thing, it would require a rather large amount of energy to turn CO2 into O2 and C. More then you would get from burning the coal in the first place, so it is rather counter productive.

    Well, there is a slight problem with your calculations - you also have to factor in the interest rates for you initial start up capital.

    TV and radio are probably the worst example you can come up with. Each station have its own wavelength, and it is not allowed to use any other wavelength.

    I think that you have forgotten that all of the kids from well off families would be getting the money too. Once you have counted all of them in, then the odds of the extra cash actually influencing enough people became doubtful.

    However, even though someone needs to have an engineer's knowledge to under how the more reliable engine works, he will still be able to like the fact that his car breaks down far less often. That is, the improvement is still quite visible.

    of course, most of the linux solutions that pop up are no where near as good as a simple setup.exe when it is no where to be found in the repos.

    Well, I doubt you can name a single one of those periods and cultures where people were not under great pressure to do things. The workweek in feudalism was 6 days, for example, which is hardly an improvement over modern sweatshops. Before then, you have slave labor under the Romans and the greeks.

    So what do you do if you want the beta or old edition of something? Download the source and compiling is still what seems to be the only option.

    There is a lot more complicated about linux instead of windows. Some of them are due to things like directx and the microsoft monopoly, but some things are just not. For example, look at the FOSS game "The battle for Wesnoth". Their install instructions for linux are quite long and complex. On the other hand, installing the game for windows is as simple as running the .exe. http://www.wesnoth.org/wiki/WesnothBinariesLinux

    And is there anything particularly wrong with this line of thought? It is already far too late to do anything about the shooter in question. Trying to control people at a personal level is also extremely difficult. Now, if there is something bigger that we can find that can accurately predict when someone is going to go nuts or not (which is somewhat unlikely to exist, but looking does not harm), then it will allow us to actively try to prevent the next one. In any case, no one is blaming the shooter, as everyone knows that it is his fault. People tend not to comment on how the sky is blue.
