A Side Effect of Testosterone Poisoning

Its not about happy or miserable, its about domination and pecking order.

Testosterone is an important chemical in human dominance. Once someone displays being angry relative to another person, then they lose the dominance game, and the other guy wins.

Nice try - even sounds plausible to those who already believe that construction is mainly composed of roughnecks.

Problem is, as a "designer/estimator/contract administrator", you wouldn't be in regular contact with the craft - you would mainly deal with the management of the contractors you deal with. And by and large they are NOT "very aggressive and quite physically confrontational". For one, they often come from outside the craft ranks - most of the project management in a contracting firm is college educated. Second, when they do come from the craft, aggressive hotheads generally don't make the cut. They lose the company money in terms of lost clients and lawsuits.

I worked in commercial and high-tech general contracting for 8 years, mechanical contracting for 3 before that, and now work for a building owner as a construction PM. I have never felt physically intimidated by the people I dealt with, craft or otherwise. I've felt intimidated via other means, and done the intimidating, but physical threats are pretty useless when throwing around millions of dollars in invoices a month.

Perhaps you're thinking I'm slightly exaggerating, or that I'm just trolling, but just take a look at this article for instance. The principal author of this research found that men with higher levels of testosterones learn better when faced with angry faces. So the conclusion/title of her study, and the corresponding headline on slashdot should have been: "Construction Workers Learn Better when Faced with Stress" or "Construction Workers Not as Dumb as Previously Thought" -- it shouldn't have been "High-testosterone people reinforced by others' anger".

But instead, the story gets completely reframed, and the researcher herself makes the huge leap of logic that since "Better learning of a task associated with anger faces [it] indicates that the anger faces were rewarding"

What!?! What the F____?? How did she reach that conclusion? And yes, I did understand the thing about the rat learning better when it gets rewarded. The missing part of her remarks however is that there are plenty of other ways we can enhance our memory. For instance, the rat and the human being also learn a lot better when they're about to get killed. And whether it's fear, sorrow, happiness, or simply ecstasy, all those emotional states have been found to enhance our memory, and extend our senses, when compared to our more neutral emotional states. So this doesn't surprise me in the least, that she and her TA, found what they found. Well, then the behavior of 19 year old girls a month after they first come out is probably not a good indicator with which to determine what is 'lesbian behavior'. Though having been in LGBT student groups in both undergrad and med school (admittedly in the 80's and 90's so not now) I rarely saw that behavior. Though I did see closeted gay kids start attending groups followed by their friends assuming this was due to their recruitment and due to a 'change' in their sexual orientation. That's not actually unexpected though. Many kids are heavily in the closet... my high school room-mate and I were both queer and both only found out after we'd both finished grad school and 're-met.' Some gay kids act painfully straight so that they are above scrutiny. So its only natural that it is perceived like a recruited change when they finally come out.

Even though this woman has no dates who are 24 years old, she still thinks she can get young men to date her.
      2) The job is number one. Everything else, including you, the relationship and any kids you have together are less important than the job.
      3) The feeling that "I don't need a man" thanks to various American movies and TV shows and the consequent feeling that "I'm not unhappy being by myself." Non-US women generally feel that it's not fun to be alone.
      4) The belief that every person has one and only one "soul mate" and any other relationship will be unfulfilling and pointless if it's not with that one soul mate. This is related to #1 but even worse.
      5) Tendency of many US women to now care only about how attractive the man is, which is again related to unrealistic expectations.

Foreign women are not all great either. My experience is that all women have problems, you just get a different set of problems with foreign women than US women. It's up to you to decide if you'd rather deal with those problems than the ones that US women have. My ex-fiancee was Ukrainian and I broke up with her because of various problems that I blame on her upbringing and Ukrainian society. Problems that I've never seen with American women but I had with her included a complete and utter lack of respect for all men (interestingly enough, her parents were still married and she loved her father, but she had no respect for any men) and a complete unwillingness to ever compromise about anything because she viewed any compromise as the actions of a loser and she didn't want to be a loser. You may come second to the job to an American woman, but she will probably treat you with respect and she might be willing to compromise on some things. With my ex-fiancee, I was certainly more important to her than her job, but I had no respect from her and I had to give in every time in the relationship to keep her happy.

There are good American women, but after you get past 30, the good ones are pretty much all married or in stable relationships and it's really hard to find the ones who aren't.

Except that isn't what was going on. These were adult women describing what happened to them at the "Womyn's Center" on campus. Now either the women I talked with were a huge statistical abnormality or what they were saying was a reasonably accurate description of what was going on. You seem to prefer believing the former and based on the extremely aggressive tenor of your original reply to the somewhat bland comments being made it feels to me like you are heavily emotionally invested in maintaining those beliefs. However I think the latter case is much more likely. I refer you to Andrea Dworkin's famous comment about all heterosexual sex being rape. For a non-trivial portion of the campus lesbian population having sex with men, excuse me, "males", was considered sleeping with the enemy and they proselytised that position to any woman they could get to listen.

If you think this unlikely consider the fact that much feminist criticism of men is phrased as criticism of "males" (e.g. "male violence")... i.e. the fundamental problem is not socialization, not situational, not economic, not cultural, not human boys and men, but maleness itself.

As for science becoming fraudulent there are a few things worth saying. First, most of the fraudulent stuff is not in science but in the social sciences where it is much easier to "fudge" things, however it does occur in gender related science as well. Second those kinds of problems are a long way down the food chain. Any scientific investigation begins with the phrasing of a question and fraud begins with making it unlikely that certain questions are ever asked, if asked never publicised, if publicised never funded, if funded not published and so on. A good example of that is the issue of domestic violence. The are huge numbers of studies on DV yet most of them do not address girl/woman on boy/man DV. Yet virtually every time that subject is explored, using exactly the same metrics used for boy/man on girl/woman DV, it turns out that there is a huge amount of such violence taking place. Most of the time the question just never gets asked in the first place.

I'm going to stop here because it's too huge an issue to address in a forum like this and I think it will take a new generation of boys/men to change anything. Of course while boys/men used to be a significant majority on university campuses they are now a minority (in my country about 40% of the undergrad population last time I looked) so it may be some time before those issues get addressed in any meaningful way. It might start with somebody asking why in the course of a single generation boys stopped doing well in school and why such large numbers stopped going off to university. The fundamental nature of boys certainly didn't change in that time and if the situation were reversed, as it was not so long ago, the very existence of the imbalance would be considered conclusive proof of system sexism.

Yes, given a level playing field, men on average will do slightly worse than women in college level activities. So when its a merit based system, you will have a slight majority of women undergraduates. (Its to the point now that many colleges in the US have lowered standards for boys to ensure that the proportions are not too far off 50:50.) There may be more men with IQ's > 160, but we also have more learning disabilities, more developmental problems, and we do worse than women in communication and language skills which are so crucial to success in college. That doesn't mean that any individual man or woman will necessarily be skilled or unskilled in any particular activity. But it does mean that when you look at proportions of a population, you'll see differences.

However that is not the result of the fact that girls have an unfair advantage in college applications, but rather when you finally get rid of the unfair disadvantage that boys have had for a very long time in school, girls will on average do better. A hundred years ago, most colleges simply would not allow women to attend. Forty years ago many major US colleges would not allow women into advanced courses like graduate or medical school. But in the short time that women have been allowed an equal chance, they are doing better. We've been given the advantages for hundreds of years with women not even being allowed to attend the vast majority of colleges until well into this last century. Now women are doing a little better than men are, and we hear guys like you crying "That's not fair!" What if people had reacted more strongly to that? That would have upset the conclusion just a bit.

I think the best conclusion you can draw from this is that people respond to the stimulus of an angry face vs. a neutral one because it is in an animal's nature to avoid things that might hurt them. I would sooner respond to a rock thrown at me than one just sitting on the ground, too. That doesn't necessarily mean I seek to have rocks thrown at me, does it? It's a little something called a survival instinct. Sure, there are people who are just a little bit perverse and enjoy the adrenaline rush of somebody being angry at them, but I think bringing that into the article smacks of an author who either only poorly understands their subject, or is trying too hard to make it digestable for the average person.

I have worked in a University psych department, and though it is not mentioned in the article, I doubt they had these subjects hooked up to so much as a *pulse/ox*. Most psychologists tend to divorce the brain from the body. It is foolish. The brain is just another organ, and we need to stop treating it like it is somehow mystically separate from the body. Especially scientists, who should be ashamed of themselves for doing so.

It is physically imposssible to be poisoned from naturally produced Testosterone. No human body could ever produce enough. In fact, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine administered 600mg of Testosterone Cypionate per week to healthy males for 10 weeks and found quite literally no side effects. None. To give a reference point, 100mg is considered a "replacement dose". So these men were given SIX TIMES the amount that can be naturally produced and they had no side effects. Many bodybuilders have been known to take several grams per week of Testosterone and the only side effects were increased water retention and acne.

The whole "Testosterone Poisoning" concept actually comes from 2 things in society. One is from the women's lobbying groups pushing their agenda in the media. However another is actually from the sports lobby itself. Back in 1988, a certain Ben Johnson tested positive for Stanazolol (common brandname Winstrol) after winning I think the 200m in the Olympics (I might be wrong on which race). Not long afterwards there were numerous cases of NFL players tested positive for AAS. There was a public outcry to "stop the cheating."

The problem with testing for AAS is 2-fold. The first is that testing for AAS is actually quite expensive and very time consuming. The second, and this is the more important one, is that if someone wants to they can compeltely avoid being caught. One such example is using Testosterone in conjunction with Epitestosterone in order to maintain subphysiological ratios. The test for supraphysiological testosterone actually only tests test/epitest ratio. So if you are within physiological ratios then you pass the test even if you've been taking 2 grams of test per week. Anotehr approach to getting around tests is to use compounds they don't test for. This is easier than you might think since there are quite literally hundreds and hundreds of Anabolic Steroid compounds that have never been sold as a drug (the current batch of "legal" steroids found in supplement stores are actually examples of that). Honestly only idiots get caught.

Then there's the other issue. It is actually in the sports industry's best interest for the athletes to be pharmaceutically enhanced. Not only does it make them bigger, stronger, faster, and more powerful, it also allows them to heal faster and more completely. People watching professional sports expect the athletes to be superhuman.

So the sports lobby had quite a conundrum. One the one hand, people want superhuman athletes. On the other they don't want to watch "cheaters." The choice was actually quite simple. Simply make it appear as though the banned substances were unnavailable and that the consequences of using them would be too negative to outway the positive. How do you do that?

    1) Begin a propaganda campaign making the banned substances sound inneffective and extremely dangerous. Most people don't know anything about them anyway so they'll believe anything. Thus people will think no athlete would use them because it would kill them.
    2) Lobby Congress to make them illegal. This way it will appear they aren't available, and even if an athlete could get them they wouldn't risk jailtime over them.

And so, the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 1990 was born and because of the propaganda campaign it had overwhelming support in both the public and Congress. Interestingly enough it was opposed by the AMA, the FDA, and the DEA. The argument from those organizations was that "Anabolic Steroids pose no major threat to those who take them and have absolutely no threat of addiction."

So, once this Act went into place, it gave the Women's movement the "credibility" to start claiming testosterone was evil and bad. Afterall, after the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 1990, testosterone was an illegal "dangerous" substance.

So don't just thank the Women's movement for this. They wouldn't have been able to push that agenda if it weren't for the NFL and MLB.

You really have to be naive to think estrogen isn't the number one factor in the growth of breast cancer. This has been a well known fact for many decades. There are two classes of drugs used to fight breast cancer. SERMs and AIs. SERM stands for Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator. SERMs are synthetic estrogens which attach to estrogen receptors but exert no action. The effect is that they disable the receptor; they block real estrogen from activating. The most popular and widely used SERM for the treatment of breast cancer is Tamoxifen. It is extremely effective however unfortunately the human body can build up a tolerance to it and thus after a long period of time estrogen receptor production upregulates and the receptors adapt so as to no longer have an affinity to tamoxifen. When that happens, the receptors are once again available to bond to estrogen and the cancer grows.

AIs are Aromatase Inhibitors. These work only for post-menopausal women because in post-menopausal women the primary source of estrogen from from aromatization of testosterone. Aromatase is an enzyme that converts testosterone to estrogen. Aromatase Inhibitors bind to aromatase thus taking it out of action so to speak. When no aromatase is available, no testosterone can convert to estrogen. The newest aromatase inhibitor, letrozole (brand name Femara) is capable of achieving up to 97% inhibition of aromatase. It has been discovered that tolerance build up is very low. In fact, IIRC there isn't a tolerance build up. It has been proven to be miraculously effective in post-menopausal women to combat breast cancer that hasn't metasticized.

If a woman has breast cancer, taking any form of estrogen supplement is a death sentence.

The media portrays them as fools, idiots, and ineffective bumblers led around by their gonads by strong intelligent competent women. Objective research shows that if anything, the opposite is true in the real world.

Guys should relax though - why? Because advancing technologies mean women will become obsolete and irrelevant in the next 20 years or so. Internet porn was just the first stage. Now we are seeing suits appear that allow you to have sex remotely. Visual, audio and amazingly - sensory perceptions are becoming more and more lifelike and cheaper and cheaper to make and buy. Virtual reality is progressing at such a rapid rate it's frightening. people are already seeking out their ideal sexual partners in virtual environments like 2nd Life.

The proliferation of teen girls who post themselves in sexual poses and situations to forums for boys to view shows that girls are already feeling the pressure to compete with these "virtual" ideals. Subconciously, they know what's coming.

Artificial wombs, cloning and other reproductive technologies are also developing rapidly. Gene splicing is already a mastered art. Designer children are on the way.

Androids are becoming more and more lifelike. A company is now selling sex "Real Dolls" that in all honesty can fool anyone into thinking they are real in photographs. They look and feel like a real woman.

These technologies are converging. in 20 years a steel worker in Detroit will be able to come home, and for a reasonable price be able to sit back in his easy chair, strap on some equipment and have sex with a supermodel. It will look and feel 100% real. In some ways it will be better than a real girl ever could be. No dinner, no movie, no paying 2 months salary for a ring, no bitching, no periods, no foreplay, no drama.

When all this happens, women are up shit creek. No man would ever put up with her crap if he can have a virtual/cloned/engineered/andriod girl who can be his perfect girl. If he wants a son, he can easily have one cloned/engineered without a woman involved. Real women will have to get a serious attitude adjustment or they will find themselves on the trash heap of history.

I know some will day that women could do the same thing, but market trends prove the opposite. Women want men, men want what women provide. There is a serious difference.
