yeah and the MASTER OF THE OBVIOUS also states that we don't need anything more than a 386 with 1MB ram...
in every discussion you get the poor folks like you who have no need or desire to extend the state of the art. fine that is your right but there are PLENTY of people who need more cpu/ram/etc.
it only gets out of hand if there is a federal law requiring you to buy a new one the day it comes out.
you are free to sit back and pick up the massive crumbs of new adopters. (not to mention the humongous price declines which ensue as a result of a new line of cards)

except that's cheating.
cheating is all fine and dandy offline (no one has any right to tell you otherwise).
but once you get online and play with others, any bullshit you pull, is blatant cheating and diminishes the value of the game for others.
and thats just but one reason i'll be playing single player games exclusively until such a time as more mature and decent people play online (around the time Hell has a booming sno-cone industry).
thats why on the x86 pc front, they use the gpu/vpu's shaders arch. to decode video; all the way fron 160x160 to 1920x1080 and above.
you don't need to or maybe even want to do it on the cpu.
you can also use the spare shader power (all current gen 3d cards have a lot of spare capacity) to do a lot of new and interesting things with the video in addition to decoding it.
no the "mainstream" media is dying because it has abondoned truthful reporting a long time ago.
but until now, there was no way for anyone else to have a "press"
and since freedom of the press is only granted to those who own one... well you can see why people are excited.
now if only those shills on/. and other sites could stop trying to belittle/insult/invalidate "blogs" as a news source... then we'd have a better informed public.
perhaps you ought to look up the word "courses" in the dictionary. :)
still takes a week to compile.
hmmm apple benefits from the PC graphics card competition...
news at 11.
EQ2 is, but WoW isn't.
wow is a dx7-lvl engine with some dx8 fx on top.
hell, you could write a pixomatic driver for it and run it entirely on your cpu with a small hit in gfx quality.
the point will be when new games take advantage of it.
current games are !shock!surprise! written with current generation hardware in mind.

high end cards have about 38 GigaBYTES of bandwidth per second. the xl in this arcticle has about 30GBytes /sec.
the next gen cards will have about 50 GBytes/sec etc.
even the next gen consoles will have massive memory bw.

except no one since the introduction of emulators would use that code. they'd just freeze the memory location for lives and forget about it.
most games don't even have formal codes. and thats not even touching on the many new/unusual things you can do by hacking the rom.
and you pay 15 bucks a month for this "privilege".
yes beos was a truly great multimedia OS that died a very early death due to MS.
it could display many videos all streaming off the disk simultaneously on a very slow p2 (300mhz).
the fact that cartridges could access data about 250-300 times faster than the slow double speed cdroms of the era made it a pro not a con.
the fact is, until this generation of consoles, disc based games weren't really needed. it was wasted on FMV and didn't look any better than the n64.
most people complained about the very long access times for ps1/saturn games and the prices were still in the 50-60 dollar range...

does anyone know if os x already does this?

no the trick is to pretend no OS has any faults whatsoever.
the right tool for the job...
or use whatever the heck you want.
but ultimately Free software will BE the future.
let me put the answer to you this way:
they should rename this site to SHILLdot.
the shills were out in full force on that story yesterday... i'll let you guess which one.
hmm, i'm craving pizza and pasta right now....
by definition, all corporations are heart-less.
MS is just more heart-less in comparison.
the lesser of many evils is still evil.
FREE(dom) software/hardware or bust.
trading one kind of user lock-in for another..
i wouldn't rely solely on benchmarks to show superiority in one set of chips over another.
remember, there are lies, damn lies, statistics and benchmarks.
argh, not another "cache makes no difference".
cache ALWAYS makes a difference.
it has ALWAYS made a difference.
just because doesn't benefit from an fps increase on a benchmark doesn't mean its the cache's fault.
people use computers for a lot more than just games.
and i guarantee you that even in general OS usage, your experience will be smoother and more responsive.
there IS a world beyond 3dmark... though you'll have to take my word for it.
it'll die long after it's usefulness to its owner has been exhausted.
not to be confused with people who increase the voltage cause some "tech site" told em to.
electron migration is mostly a myth. i've never heard of any cases, either online or off.
again, it's probably because the cpus were thrown in the dumpster long before the electrons became refugees.
the old days? i guess you mean from 4-5 years ago?
/.'s timeliness with it's "news".
an eon in computing time.
so i guess you are one more on the list of people who can't make fun of
and since when is inserting large objects in ones' rectum ever a good idea?
apparently anything you don't agree with is "liberal" instead of "just plain stupid and wrong".
i saw we take the conservatives and burn them alive and then we toast the liberals on their still flaming hot corpses.
then once we're rid of those morons, humans can make some tangible gains in quality of life.
and thats a bad thing how?
even the US.AA in the early years rejected the british copyright/patent laws too.
