  1. Re:Slip of the mind.. on Closed Source -> Charges Dismissed? · · Score: 3, Interesting

    Just a cautionary tale..

Years ago in my old home town, the 30 limit on a particular piece of road was moved 200m down the road, away from town. This was previously a 60 limit, a nice big wide road, with no houses or turn-offs on it. This was done at about lunchtime. That evening, the police stopped everyone speeding (doing the old 60 limit) down this section of road. All were asked if they had seen the new speedlimit signs. Most said no. All were let off the speeding charge with a warning. 2 weeks later, everybody who had said that they did not see the new signs was summoned to court for driving without due care and attention (if they did not see the new signs, they could not have been paying attention, right?). Bigger fine, more points!

Moral of this story? Keep a lookout at road signs, even if you have driven the same route for years!

That is also true. I bet they wouldn't release the user guide under a GPL-like licence!

I suppose one possible answer to this would be to have a good user manual yourself, and work on making sure your software is featured prominantly on the web. Not an easy problem to solve...

I am not using any of those. I don't have a CD burner in this box, so no need for K3b. I use Enlightenment, Firefox, Amsn, Vim, Xmms, etc, etc.

Not using KDE apps does not mean being stuck with Xterm. I could also use Gnome apps if I want to stay away from KDE apps...

    P.S, I don't use Xterm, I use Eterm.

....I'd be if I were up all night coding a release, and then, suddenly, my commerical counterpart announces a new build, new features, and and an upgrade fee the next day!

But what would stop you getting the sources, incorperating their improvements into your code, adding a new feature that people will want, but not enough people to justify the company developing it, and releasing it yourself, for free? Or even just taking the Open source code and releasing it for free, changing for support? Then the company is left changing for the same (or less featureful) product you are now giving away.

Open source cuts both ways. They can base their commercial app on your code, but you can base your code on their commercial app.

    Swings and roundabouts really.

Looks like an ombudsman is a lawyer, so if you cannot find one, maybe a Lawyer will do.

Indeed. But if you _do_ think that not supporting Hyperthreading is a limitation, then you can get the Extreme Edition, that _does_ support Hyperthreading.

This looks like a case of separating the mainstream processor from the Geeks/Gamers processor. If they shipped all Dual core chips with Hyperthreading on, what would they do for the EE?
