  1. After reading TFA.. on How Linux Beats Windows in ID Management Ease · · Score: 1

    - Disclaimer: This could easily be considered as a troll or flameblait, but its only an observation since I have completely switched to using Linux last year and may be offtopic, but ... I immediately thought about how software/package management and administration is also easier in Linux. Yes, i'm talking about APT. Now before you mod me down, please consider this: Does Windows offer anything that allows you to upgrade ALL installed packages (providing that updates are out there) with one command? Does Windows allow you to make core changes to the installed packages and continue your computing tasks without rebooting? Does Windows allow you to browse, download and install over free 15000 packages at once if that is your choice? (Synaptic - This is the best thing since sliced bread, you can do so much with this application) Don't get me wrong, Linux does suffer with package installation sometimes, but I think MS should investigate how to implement something like APT into Windows. This may be a far stretch, but it is worth a mention. I _used_ to hate trying to clean up my machine, and the files that are on it by digging through the registry, and the rest of that crap. Also some software sometimes refuses to uninstall. This is something that has always annoyed me.

  5. What a waste of a post... on Windows Longhorn Beta Screenshots · · Score: 1

I have no clue why every other build of Longhorn warrants an entire article to display screenshots.

Screenshots have never done much for me. I would rather get an update of what will fundamentally influence buyers to upgrade to Longhorn.

It seems Longhorn changes with the wind. I guess MS is just waiting around on what industry is doing and including whatever they can before the next release. I do not see any innovation.

What will be Microsoft's marketing push for Longhorn? Will they boast 200 new features as OS X Tiger did? I really haven't noticec anything new except the transparency and the tabs in IE7.

The screenshots look decent and refreshing compared to XP but anyone can change the theme if they want something different.

I also never understand why users of Windows and Linux always complain about the default installation.

In Windows people always complain about the 'Fisher-Price' color scheme. I could understand if you didn't have the ability to modify it. (Change it, shutup)

In Linux, some people complain about the ability to play mp3 and DVDs out of the box. Take some time to understand the reasons behind this and stop trolling the various forums. Installation of this functionality is mostly trivial.

    end of rant

I installed Ubuntu for my sister and her kids and sat down and taught them how to operate some of the software (K3B, they always bug me to burn CDs). Low and behold, they defaulted back to picking and running WinXP (dual-boot). Well anyway, I went over to hang out over there this weekend and took my laptop (Ubuntu based) and logged onto the wireless network and some spyware redirected www.google.com to some other crap site offering Spyware removal. I couldnt believe my eyes, since I have used Linux instead of Windows for about a year and half. I guess those stories about Windows becoming infected in 12 mins are true. This was a fresh install.

My sister works at a medical admin office and the manager has implemented the perfect Windows security policy:

Remove all privleges for all employees. Can't access the internet or install applications. This was done after the manager recieved a virus via Outlook and she thinks she is the only person in the office with that may open attachments.

Spyware, malware, viruses and any other non-intended features of Windows made it easy for me to switch to Linux for everyday normal desktop use. I believe this is a major reason for users to switch if you are not dependent on Windows only applications. Besides, running Norton Antivirus was consuming alot of resources and slowing the entire system down. It's great not to worry about malware running in the background. I think is was interesting that Intel's CEO said that he spends the weekend cleaning his daughters computer of spyware and that people should switch to Apple (before the official announcement) Bottom Line, switch to some *nix based OS.

  15. Re:Don't bother with Ubuntu on Fedora Core 4 Available · · Score: 1

After the one week delay of the Fedora Core 4 release, I made the choice to switch from Fedora Core 3 to Ubuntu. Installed it on my laptop in less than 25 minutes. I must say that is it better for normal desktop computing (and a couple of games).

All hardware was recognized out of the box. Was able to configure my wireless chipset with ndiswrapper without much effort. I also like the insane amount of packages available in Ubuntu's repositories and who doesn't love Debian based package management? Almost everything you need is also in one central location. (I do applaud the efforts of 3rd-party repos)

I will install FC_4 on my new desktop on another partition only because Fedora adopts and includes the newest of technology (GCC 4.0, Xen, SELinux, etc.)

My biggest gripe with the distro is the non-availability of upgrading with yum and not being able to get some mono based apps working.

Others complaign about the lack of multimedia support but all of that can be easily configured. I understand the decision not to include mp3 and dvd support.

I used Fedora Core on the desktop for around a year starting with Core 2 but I want a stable and less bleeding edge distro for the desktop and Ubuntu does the job.

Also, as many people suggest do not use Fedora on a production server. This distro evolves to fast for that environment. Use CentOS (if you prefer Red Hat) or Debian instead.

Don't get me wrong, Fedora is an attractive distro
for all purposes, and I like it's bleeding edge nature but in around 4-5 months support for FC_3 will start to vanish and leaving users no option but to upgrade. I rather have the 18 month support of Ubuntu.
