It can be both ways. For most people, a command line is either too much power or too confusing, and a GUI is all they need. They dont care about wget or [insert ftp client here], they want to click a link then click save. Moving files? Renaming them? Listing a directory's contents? WTF is a directory? On the other hand, most slashdotters are more advanced users who can handle having everything at their fingertips and are more productive that way as a result.

Blaspheme! Dare you soil the name of vim! Even emacs deserves better than this you unbelieving pagan. Go back to the abyss from whence you came, spawn of evil!

On a more serious note, I liked IDEs much more than simply editors until I used a serious editor. I started with emacs but soon gravitated to vim, the choice is unimportant however. A properly configured vim or emacs can be 10x as productive as anything a traditional IDE can offer, much parallel to the comparisons between the command line and the GUI.

One of the Few things i admire about Europe is their mass use of train systems, they are very reliable, fast, efficient, and overall a good solution to mass transit problems.

You had me until the 'capitalist' part. Chinese have so few freedoms, and businesses are no exception. I researched them for a human right project last year and, while there are many successful businesses in China, it happens falsely most of the time with heavy government interference. Without it much of their economy would crumble. Most of the big names in Chinese business are at least partially government owned or run. While they are not entirely 1984, i wouldn't go so far as to call them capitalism either, I'd rather not soil that name.

People also seem to forget that regime change in Iraq was US policy since Clinton. Bush did *not* have to ask Congress for permission as he would only have been carrying out our laws. I think hed did the right thing in getting Congress' permission however, and simply hating the US for being different is wrong, as is hating anything, including the EU or the UN. Disliking the US for specific purposes is ok, but generalized hate of all things American is wrong. However, before anyone bites me, most people who criticize the UN don't do it because its different, but because they believe it is wrong.
