  1. Great Work! on Students Learn To Write Viruses · · Score: 1
It surely does make eminent sense to teach them how to write malicious software. Formal education is always the first step towards making something boring and dull. Teaching such things in a formal "educational" environment would at least make sure that the budding virus-writers passing out from such places would write low quality viruses that can be easily tackled!

Much like most of today's software!

  2. Too Self-Congratulatory! on Firefox's Effect On Other Browsers · · Score: 1
While there is no doubt that Firefox is a superior product currently, I think the tone that Blizzard adopts in the interview is distinctly self-congratulatory.

I think it is a bit early for that considering that Firefox is still not close to being the "most used" browser in the world.

  3. Re:Or it is not spreading on Why Linux Doesn't Spread - the Curse of Being Free · · Score: 2, Interesting

I agree with you on this one. Most "mainstream" manufacturers have shown enormous reluctance in offering Linux as a pre-installed option in their products. Then you have the li'l problems when you buy some gadgets that come with only Windows versions of the software that runs/manages them. And, of course, the fact that most human beings avoid change if they can help it.

  4. Cute! on Microsoft Battles Vista Perception With Prizes · · Score: 1

Sort of cute, isn't it? However, I think it is definitely a step in the right direction. MS Vista is a bad OS but is really not as bad and unusable as it is made out to be.

  6. What's wrong!? on German Court Rules iPhone Locking Legal · · Score: 2, Insightful
I think one cannot really stop Apple(or any other company for that matter) from producing a phone, tying up with a cellular operator and selling it to consumers subject to a specific set of conditions. If the consumers don't like it, they are free not to buy it. I am sure most people can survive without iPhones. :-)

If most of the customers don't buy it (and they can choose not too, since markets are, for the most part, democratic), the product will be forced to disappear or change according to the needs of the market.

So stop whining! If you don't like the terms relating to the product, just don't buy it! It's as simple as that.

  7. Re:We still hate him on Bill Gates Drops To Number 2 · · Score: 2, Interesting

There seems to be a misunderstanding by some people - including Gates himself - that Bill Gates is hated because he is rich. This is not true. We envy him because he is rich. I couldn't agree with you more on this part. We hate him because he produces crappy software and uses unethical techniques to promote it. Being surpassed in the richest person list does not change this. On this one, I am not so sure. Do we all hate all other "producers" of "crappy software" just as much? I am sure a lot of these folks would also be using unethical practices somewhere or the other.

I've been using Firefox since the "beta" days. It has always been a pleasure to use. Moreover, I have always wanted it to succeed -- it is just one of those things where one is not been able to supply a logical reason as to why?Maybe it has got to do with supporting the underdog!

The one complaint I have against it (and I just can't find a logical reason as to why this should happen) is that almost every time I use FireFox I end up with an inactive/dead pixel on my IBM Thinkpad and it lasts until I reboot the machine. This is something that does not happen when I use IE. My ATI Radeon display drivers are upto date and so I think of a reason as to why this should happen. As long as I use IE, there is no dead anything - except possibly my soul!

Not that all this makes a difference to the way I feel about my fovorite browser.

Could someone update me on the exact status of IBM Thinkpads. I was under the impression the hardware business has been sold to Lenovo and that the latter would be allowed to use IBM's name for a few years. So would this be an IBM Thinkpad or would it be a Lenovo Thinkpad?
