    The difference is Microsoft would push it out as a critical security update. Canonical is making you A) hear about it in the first place and B) make a conscious effort to download and install it.

    We're not talking Microsoft here. It isn't being pushed to you as an important security update. It's currently a completely optional package that you have to specifically choose to install, if you've even heard about it.

    Ask me to design my ideal car and it'll have a lightweight but strong aluminium body, a simple, efficient diesel engine, comfortable seats and a decent stereo. Everything else is chaff, I don't even need ABS.

    I'd rather have airbags than a decent stereo.

    However, before even thinking about airbags, I'd really enjoy to have lights, windshield, mirrors, ...

    Brakes are nice too. unless you're planning to go slow enough to brake with your foot.

    Wheels are a nice feature too.

    Nah, they're just a fad.

    We would have gone out and dug up our own information. And our beliefs wouldn't be based on incorrect information in the first place.

    Be nice to think so but it's been my experience that people, including supposedly intelligent people, will just go find misinformation that suits what they want to believe and truth be damned. I offer the entirety of slashdot comments as evidence.

    Wait though, aren't there far more right wing authoritarian nations out there, by U.S. standards, than there are left wing socialist-ish nations? I think you must mean your cherry picked group of nations from Europe. Or possibly just Berkeley.

    No, this won't detect anything any faster than before. As has been stated above, the metadata will just be removed (probably automatically) as part of the ripping process. Transcoding would destroy it entirely, so it would have only worked on bit for bit rips of the original stream anyway.

    It's simply another astoundingly stupid and completely ineffective idea for the media companies to waste their money on.

    If it were a USB key, I'd say you had a point. But since it's a stick of ram that I've been stuffing in my pocket and handling without taking any anti-static precautions whatsoever, it just really doesn't matter what size it used to be.

    Mine hang outside my pocket, held there by the 16MB (fuck off, MiB fascists) stick of ram attached to the key chain and shoved in my front pocket. The ram grabs surprisingly well onto the inside of the pocket against anything but a straight upwards pull, then it slides out quite easily.
