When I was younger I never even thought about it and thought the computer was talking anyway through some speakers offscreen, like when David turned the voice synthesizer on at his house it never turned off. Took a lot of years to realize that it was a voiceover.

  2. The pain is in the price on PS3, Xbox Having Disappointing Christmas Season · · Score: 1

This crop of systems have been the most expensive of any console generation that I remember. Once the systems get out there and all the die-hard gamers have their money spent on their system it's time to lower the price.

For me, $200-$250 is my price point, and I've bought almost every Nintendo system anyway, so they'll get my money for sure.

The PS3 will never be in my home until it reaches that price point or I can get a good deal somewhere. I have a HD set (and DVD movies look nice with my mythtv system set to 720p), but it's 4:3 and only has component inputs, so the blu-ray is useless for me right now. I didn't even buy a PS2 until it was $179, and that was because it bundled with the network adapter (which saw no use, oops).

The Xbox of this generation is the same of the last generation: not enough games for me to be interesting in purchasing. I could probably pick up a used Xbox for $75 if I really wanted to, but there's just no real need that is pushing me to spend even that much. The 360 has the same feeling for me. Some interesting games, but not enough interest to push for a purchase, even though I would probably enjoy Dead Rising.

The voice on every terminal was more for the benefit of not having to keep the camera at the screen to know what the computer was "saying". Adding the voice at the beginning of the movie helped later so that they could cut away from what David was reading but we still know what the computer was telling him, and the audience wouldn't think twice about it. I would think that, when David is in NORAD using the terminal when the security guards come to take him away, they would have said "Holy shit, how did you make that terminal talk with no speakers?" And no, it's not too early to judge. It'll be shit, like The Net, though I haven't seen Net 2.0 yet to say the same for that.

He probably means the buffering. The PVR-*50 and 500s don't just pop what they're capturing onto the screen in Myth in real time. They actually do about a 2 second buffer before showing something on the screen. Whether that's the drivers for linux or Myth I don't know.

I do remember seeing something a while ago on Windows MCE where they were showing off how they had worked around the buffering and were able to just go to Live TV without any pausing. Hopefully it's a matter of time before Myth gets that functionality.

  6. Whatever happened to... on Variety Declares VHS Dead · · Score: 1

...Digital VHS, JVC's hail to the savior of VHS with the ability to record (at least for now) OTA HDTV? I've seen the recorders at Best Buy (I'm sure they've all gone away by now) but it just never seem to catch on. Maybe it was too early to introduce them, since it was brought out before the days of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD with their expensive players. As I remember, it cost $500 and the tapes were $20 each, which was a bit ridiculous for a tape player. I wonder if they could re-release it now for cheaper.

  7. Re:Another SF Movie? on Halo Movie Postponed, Street Fighter Movie On · · Score: 1

If Chris Roberts had kept true to the game and not decide to remake his own history the movie would've turned out a lot better. I think the newer Battlestar Galactica is the movie that Wing Commmander wanted to be, and should have been.
