Halo Movie Postponed, Street Fighter Movie On
FofR writes "Given the previous statements concerning the Halo Movie's stalled progress, it should come as no surprise that the movie is now officially on hold." From the article: "At this time Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, along with their partner, Microsoft, have mutually agreed to postpone making a feature film based on the Halo video game universe until we can fulfill the promise we made to millions of Halo fans throughout the world that we would settle for no less than bringing a first class film to the big screen. We are fully supportive of Director Neill Blomkamp's vision of the film. Neill is a tremendously gifted filmmaker and his preliminary work on Halo is truly awe-inspiring. While it will undoubtedly take a little longer for Halo to reach the big screen, we are confident that the final feature film will be well worth the wait." You'll be happy to know even if a Jackson-inspired Halo isn't coming our way, at least we can look forward to another Street Fighter movie.
I heard the Halo movie will be released alongside Duke Nukem Forever: The Movie.
This guy's the limit!
Another street fighter movie? While we are at it lets make another Super Mario Brothers and Wing Commander.
In a world of acronyms, the words are the real victims.
Nooooooooooooooo! Now see, I've reminded myself of the end to Episode III... Thanks... Thanks a lot.
Raul Julia as M. Bison, Van Damme and Kylie Minogue, well ... Maybe I'm suspicious because I was both a teenager and addicted in the video game. The best quote in the movie in my opinion:
...you got paid?
Zangief: General Bison is a bad guy? If you know then why do you work for him?
Dee Jay: Because he paid me a freakin fortune, Man! If you know what's good for you you'll save your own ass!
Zangief:
And, yes, I realize he is "fleshed out" in the novels. But the novels are pulp crap. In the novels, he goes from a 0-dimensional character to a 1-dimensional character. That's not even nearly enough to make an interesting film.
It would be difficult, if not impossible, to make a film that stayed true to the videogame (to make the fans happy), was commercially successful enough to justify its high budget (to make the studio happy), and had well-developed characters and an interesting plot (to make the critics happy). That's why so many studios have passed on it.

So the sex was postponed, but at least we got the syphilis? Awesome! Thank you, Hollywood!
Being bitter is drinking poison and hoping someone else will die
Not being a Halo fan I am moderatly intrested in the Street Fighter movie, if it's all about being able to drink beer whilst in my favourite lounger like the first movie was, it's okay in my book.
Any word yet on how many Bison Dollars it'll cost to make?
Any status on the Sonic Movie?
"You spoony bard!" -Tellah
Also under consideration is the movie's title. Options being debated include "Longhalo" and "Halo Vista."
Has there ever been a game movie that has done well in the theaters? I sure cannot think of one. It seems like a lesson should have been learned by now...
Haven't we learned anything? The last Street Fighter film KILLED RAUL JULIA. What beloved actor will be struck dead in his shoes this time by our hubris?
...Halo shoots you!

Note it hasn't yet been picked up by a studio, so this could be a straight-to-video release if we're lucky.
THIS THING CAN TURN ON A DIME, MACROSSZERO STYLE ALSO FUCK BETA, ~NYORON
I've always thought that some story-intensive games might make good movies. Games like Halo, Doom, and Mario just don't have a dynamic enough plot. But you might be able to do it with games like Deus Ex, or Metal Gear (which has enough cut scenes that it might as well be a movie).
Important thing with those would be to stay true to the storyline, and don't try to bring video game elements into it (like when Doom would do first-person view, Resident Evil had a boss fight).
A movie where Solid Snake and a partner have to accomplish some mission would be a decent spy movie, except it'd be hard to make it a standalone movie, since there's so much story in the games now.
Why is everyone saying that the Street Fighter movie was bad? It was great!
Oh... you mean the non-anime one? Sorry.
Most people would have thought that a Halo movie would suck donkey dick, and cancelled any such waste of money. Glad to see Peter has come around to that conclusion.
Now make the Hobbit dammit.
Apart from Tomb Raider, which appeared to do quite well, I do not know of ANY movie-cum-game that has done very well. Doom the movie sucked @$$, as did the previous Street Fighter movies.
I enjoyed Mario brothers, but then I was about ten years old when it came out, so that doesn't relaly count.
Transferal from one medium to the other rarely works very well. Movies to games is more forgiving, but then it is easier than games to movies.

Are they just calling it Street Fighter 2? Championship Edition? Turbo? Hyper Fighting? Alpha?
The only Game movies I have seen that werent compltele disasters were Mortal Kombat (the first one), Silent Hill and Resident Evil. Of those none were particularly good, just not as bad as they could have been. The best video game movies are the ones that were based on video games that didnt exist or ended up spawning video games based on them, Tron, Cloak & Daggar and The Last Starfighter come to mind.
Why are the majority so bad? Why must every director put their "creative stamp" on things. Of course the same thing happens to comic book movies. This will get me modded down faster than saying something negative about firefly but IMHO Brian Singer ruined Superman Returns that way much like Ang Lee and the Hulk. Neither were really terrible but for fans they were just not right. For that reason alone I really hope that the Halo film never gets made, Street Fighter has already been ruined and who under the age of 20 really knows what Street Fighter is anyway, so who cares if they want to piss away money for a Golden Turkey award let them.
I am still convinced that Street Fighters is what killed Raul Julia...he died of shame.
Rumor has it that the Street Fighter game is going to be based around Chun-Li which tells me the focus is less on fighting and more on T&A. That being the case wouldnt they have been better off going for Dead of Alive its more well known with the younger gamers and if far more of a T&A fest than Street Fighter. Heck they could scrap the fighting and go for Dead of Alive Volleyball. Of course they could also just doodle a hentai flick and achieve the same goals for 1/4th the budget.
A friend and I used to deliberately go to see the worst movies playing, so of course we saw the first Street Fighter movie. He took his son, who was four or five at the time. At the end, he turned to his dad and asked: "Why did they call it Street Fighter if they're in the jungle all the time?"
That pretty much sums up the movie in a sentence.
So, I suppose the moral of the story is that they couldn't do any worse in a new version.

Every time you make a Street Fighter Movie, God kills a Raul Julia caliber actor.
Everyone assumes that the Halo movie would be terrible because all the recent movies based on video games have sucked. I can't fault the last part of that. But I must confess that before I saw The Fellowship of the Ring, I was 95% sure that it would suck because fantasy movies have sucked IMHO (maybe excepting Legend and the Dark Crystal--a strong maybe). Before Fellowship I would have said fantasy didn't translate well as a live-action medium. Now I recognize that there is great potential because of that trilogy along with the Harry Potter movies. They can be popular and well-produced. The effects are believable. So why assume that the guy who oversaw LOTR couldn't do the same for video games? He does have a decent track record.
About the only way I can see the Street Fighter movie succeeding is if they throw in a ton of special effects this time and actual give the fighter their special moves. Oh yeah, and keep Van Damage as far from it as possible.
