That's interesting to me that PHP is more popular than a language like C#. But I guess when you include VB and all of its legacy, then the whole ".NET" stack is quite a bit more popular.
Is Ribbon really that stupid? I kind of like that part of Office.
What I hate is text formatting and the way that Outlook will randomly change my font color between words. That is a UI that's broken as hell but most people don't even seem to care...
Amateur radio seems to be overly restricted in the States. I have little interest trying to participate in a P2P communication system where encryption is explicitly forbidden. Also, the fact my country would prosecute me for communicating internationally with someone who lives under a repressive regime seems totally bogus.
Seriously, how are Facebook and Apple threatening the freedom of the internet?
Ever been to a site that requires a Facebook login? I have. It sucks not being able to listen to free Internet radio because you don't have a Facebook account.
This billion dollar expenditure to buy something as silly as software patents is the #1 reason why they won't go away. Big business has too much invested in software patents to let some pesky government go about changing the rules. Meanwhile, small business suffers for it.
Came here to say this, but found your commentary to be better than mine.
Since we have to live with software patents, the best we can hope for is that these patents are used defensively.
But even if they take some of these patents to war, I just don't see them striking out against Mozilla or Chrome. They aren't exactly Microsoft's biggest targets right now, and I'm pretty sure MS knows they don't want to have to withstand the backlash that attacking Mozilla or Chrome would create.
That's a very serious misrepresentation of the phone call. NBC obviously did this to rile up viewers and try to create the story (and central character) to be larger than life. Journalistic integrity at its worst.
the Wii U actually isn't as powerful as the Xbox 360 or PS3
Oh for crying out loud, Nintendo has gone completely niche at this point. Their platform is so much like a lesser version of Apple's, gimped software features, walled garden environment but you don't even get the cutting edge highly polished hardware. Just some decent first party software
The underspec'ed hardware is going to be a huge failure for Nintendo. The Wii version of any game is significantly hampered compared to any other platform. The hardware investment is not worth the payoff of a handful of good first-party titles, of which there are far too few.
Finally, the Internet-o-phobia present in all online Wii games makes their multiplayer modes worthless. I do not want to exchange 16 digit PIN codes for every new game that I want to play with the same old friends.
Japanese console makers don't get it, and Microsoft's platform doesn't appeal to me. I've known for awhile now that my current set of video game consoles will be the last that I ever purchase for myself.
I still don't understand why Americans on Slashdot (only on Slashdot) appear to think it's a big deal that the EU has laws like this.
I don't think that this perception has anything to do with Slashdot. It's certainly a cultural thing.
If Congress tried to pass something like this, we would never hear the end of "socialist liberal government taking over the free market." Sigh. But as you said, standard consumer protection stuff.
This is really amusing to me, that the EU has laws that mandate minimum warranty policies for devices sold.
Some of the only comparable laws I can think of in the US have to do with automobile emissions systems. If your car starts spewing too much pollution before 90,000 miles, the manufacturer is on the hook regardless of what warranty they sold with the car.
That's a rather harsh assumption coming from someone who didn't bother to read the title of GP's post. If you are confused as to what "W3C" stands for, perhaps you should actually check out w3.org instead of asking stupid questions.
The bitcoin incident wasn't related to a vulnerability in SSH, some root account at Linode had its credentials leaked. SSH was simply the protocol used by hackers to authenticate with genuine credentials.
I thought the tradeoff mentioned in the summary was with regards to Intel vs AMD: You get better graphics with the integrated AMD Fusion chips, but poorer CPU performance.
In other news, I bought one of the new AMD 6-core FX processors. Despite the miserable benchmarks, that thing feels faster than any other CPU I've had the privilege of using.
What serious developer doesn't use PDO/mysqli and prepared statements?
What serious developer uses mysqli? (Just kidding of course!)
But really, all of our business data is on SQL Server or DB2/400. And the PDO drivers for either SQL Server or ODBC (DB2) are buggy and incomplete. Hell, the entire PHP implementation of ODBC is buggy, it intentionally trashes all numeric data types and instead treats them as strings.
PHP is my bread and butter, but it's also kind of a ghetto.

Police department wants to fight it out in federal court to try and establish their right to steal software? Hmm...
It doesn't have that stupid Ribbon UI interface!

That dude hasn't said one smart thing since he's taken office.

Android has Instagram? Well that does it. Prepare to be flooded with pictures of ramen noodles and food stamps.

I just took a look at QML on Wikipedia and the code examples aren't exactly awesome. I wish they would have stuck closer to JSON syntax.
They haven't contributed to the betterment of Linux on the whole.
I was with you on this for the past decade. Then on November of 2011, they went and did this. Real Linux drivers for SQL Server? Yeah!
And if you don't think that counts towards the betterment of Linux, then we're just going to have to disagree!
So should I get used to seeing ads like this as an everyday occurrence on Slashdot? Taco must have known something was up.

We just started watching season 6 on Netflix last night. I didn't know the Doctor was in need of a new companion!!
What are you, illiterate?

Please don't confuse the World Wide Web Consortium with the shitty spam farm known as W3Schools.
You must not be an American. In this corner of the world, we setup "border checkpoints" up to 100 miles away from the nearest border.
Taking marijuana away George Hotz is only one of many important steps our government makes every day in order to keep us free.
What's the statistic for burglaries per square mile?

it's the actual skilled IT that will be losing work.
Do you really believe that? Skilled IT will always be able to supply value to a business, regardless of whether the data or server is located.
