Katrina's aftermath was a great example of massive government failure and mismanagement. It shouldn't be confused with what we would have had in a consistent tax-free society - where people don't have the means to prepare taken from them by force of government.
I'm not so sure... the only reason microsoft is in the position they are is because of the artificial government granted monopoly over an idea, what we call "intellectuak property". So they've been using the force of government to back up the windows tax for a long time, wouldn't be nearly so wealthy without that.
No, they will pay for it because it is nice to live in civilization. Who in their right mind wouldn't? And who says the government actually provides civilization? Civilization isn't force.
I guess people wouldn't want to build roads unless they're forced to by the government (who does a terrible job of maintaing roads anyway)
Nobody would help out the permanently disabled without the government (who does a terrible of it)
Nobody would be able to teach their kids school or pay for health card without the government (who does a terrible job at both of those)
Nobody would want to extinguish any fires without the government (who does a terrible job of it)
Nobody would want to catch criminals without the government (how often does your local law public law enforcement catch them?)
And finally, nobody would care about people who can't help themselves without the government.
In summary... the government does a terrible job at all the things you mention, and assuming none of them would be available wihtout the government is ridiculous and intellectually lazy.
I've had an iTouch for about a year, and I really wanted it to be a good voip phone. I realized it's probably not gonna happen, because Apple in their infinite wisdom decided not to include a microphone and a speaker in my revision.
Now I'm going with the e71 instead, it's due to arrive within a week. I'm hoping Fring works well with skype in and skype out, then I will probably get just a data plan with it and skip voice all together. I'll still hang on to my iTouch for browsing and games.
When those android tablets start hitting the market, I plan on dropping the e71 & iTouch and getting one of those, probably after waiting for some price drops.
Every time I go over to PA, I try to get a case of Yuengling, and it really sucks because I never know where any distributors are. It would be so much better if I could just go to a grocery store like in Ohio. These moronic laws really don't make Utah look all that bad. Seems like it's all about using the State to enrich the owners of these few distributors at the people's expense. I have a hard time seeing how a market for beer distributors could exist without the government's heavy handed intervention.
Well, that was pretty stupid of him but in the day and age of the camera phone it's pretty hard to avoid having your picture taken. I think a lot less of the dipshit that took the picture and opted to give/sell it to a tabloid. Anybody with a half a brain could realize the likely outcome of that to a person like Phelps. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I wouldn't sell such a picture if I knew it was likely to ruin someones life/career.
Still, he should have been smart enough to realize that it's hard to avoid having your picture taken. He could have easily avoided doing the activity in that kind of environment to begin with. I have no problem with smoking pot, and I think it should be legal. But Phelps really was stupid about it in this case.
then they will show up as there is now a market for them
Either that, or the companies simply won't sell there and focus on states that still buy closed source.
Sadly, my state just bought a whole bunch of these suckers... hopefully they will be challenged here too.
Of course, I don't believe drinking and driving should really even be a crime to begin with. There's already laws against hitting someone while driving.
I believe patents do nothing to encourage innovation. Actually they stifle innovation because you can't improve on someone else's work. And in this case, MIT has essentially robbed a student of using their work and knowledge.
It all comes down to the fallacious notion that someone's idea can be property.
I've had an iTouch for about a year and love using it when I'm at the in-laws or in front of the TV. Sometimes it's just nicer to have that than a laptop. I would love having a 7" screen on it with higher resolution. I would probably still carry it around a bigger version.
My number one disappointment is that the Touch doesn't have a microphone or speaker. I doubt Apple will ever include a microphone, as people like me will start using it for voip instead of paying through the nose for an iPhone contract. For this reason alone I'm pretty tempted to go with another tablet in the future. And maybe a real qwerty smartphone like Nokia's e71.
A federal judge in Ohio recently ruled that speeding in a school zone is civil, not criminal, in nature. Therefore, car owners aren't entitled to constitutional protection that comes from being charged with a crime.
They are pretty convincing to me that it would work in practice. Especially the Ethics of Liberty.
Obviously, most people would have to change their mindset before it could happen. Drastic change in political systems happened in the past, and I see no reason why it couldn't happen again.
Churchill, as usual, was wrong. The best alternative to democracy, imho, is no government. Please take a look at the following and let me know what you think:
1. Ensure that a candidate pays some attention to the rest of the country.
Candidates pay no attention to the rest of the country. They only pander to what will get them the most votes. The massive bailouts of the wealthy is proof enough of this. Most of the idiots who passed it against the public's wishes will still be re-elected.
2. Convince the majority of the armed forces of the country that their is an EASIER, CHEAPER, less DANGEROUS way to remove the current political leader than starting a revolution. (No, it won't work if the country is spit geographically and the minority knows it will never convince the majority of their point of view, but it will work for 90% of the problems like say a moronic Republican government that destroys the economy, the environment, the international ties, etc.)
As opposed to a moronic Democratic government that destroys the economy? Offering up choices between a turd and a douche will definitely do nothing to fix those problems 90% of the time.
3. Ensure that the candidate is not below average intelligence. (Yes, GWB is not below average. Not above average, but not below either).
So what? All the worst despots of the 20th century were above average intelligence.
so, all property is an extension of government force? interesting theory there...

Did you not read the article? Or my post?
Taxpayer money is being spent to directly benefit Microsoft. Where did I say they would be given a bridge?
Yes, there is something wrong with taking my money and giving it to the wealthy.

So taxation is necessary for civilization? Pretty big assumption if you ask me.
I recently started using my ipod touch as an ebook reader. Maybe not for everyone, but it works for me.

I've also been using google notebook because I'm tired of losing my bookmarks whenever I switch a computer or browser.
However, if they do terminate it completely and take it offline, I'll just start using gmail and create a new label for all my bookmarks.

that would be the engrish version of the headline.
I think this dubious honor belongs to the US government.

Easy - Congress got involved. And, as usual, they are a complete waste of time, money, and effort.
need to be legal. Drug war does absolutely nothing to prevent people from getting them who really want it. Complete waste of my money.
I don't see how you come to such conclusions. human nature doesn't make democratic utopia any more workable than any other form of government.
They are pretty convincing to me that it would work in practice. Especially the Ethics of Liberty.
