To make matters worse, they've already announced a widescreen version if I remember correctly, thus killing the version set for release now before it even comes out. Those guys at Tiger, they are some real marketing geniuses.

I'm looking forward to getting my GP2X, though. They realized early on that the real market for niche portable consoles is homebrew and they embraced it right away. The majority of the people getting one won't care if there isn't a single commercial game out for it. If Tiger had done that, they could have used their considerably larger marketing muscle (larger than Game Park Holdings, anyway) to cultivate a sizeable development community around it. Instead it's going to die quickly and get relegated to an obscure chapter of gaming history.

I'm tired of people associating reading with thinking. I could be reading trash romance or crime novels all day long, and I could be watching the News Hour, or Nova, or something even more educational/thought-provoking on TV. The association between reading and knowledge is a holdout from the days when reading was pretty much the only way to get information beyond your immediate surroundings.

Actually no, it's not. It's because watching TV is a much more passive activity. You just sort of sit there and passively take in the information. With a book you have to actually read what's on the page to take in the content, comprehend it, and visualise what it is saying. There are shitty books just as there is shitty television, but the level of involvement in reading is higher and that's more likely where the association between reading and knowledge comes from.

Mono has a cross platform GUI framework. GTK# is already fairly stable all-in-all and works well on all platforms except for Mac (which requires X to use it). I'm sure there are people who will dump all over GTK+ here but it is possible to make cross platform .NET apps as long as you don't actually use Microsoft's shit to do it.

There are exceptions of course but for the most part I don't think it's that much of a restriction. I'd rather have a hard drive myself and I'm a little choked that it's not being included this time around from what I hear.

I have a hard time to see the gain in security by disalowing root but allowing users to login and then sudo.

You must not have much experience with sudo. One of the benefits of it is that it allows you to give root permission to people for specific tasks that they would need that access level for. While there are certainly a lot of people who set their sudoers file to "allow all" for everyone, if sudo is properly implemented no one should be able to do anything they don't NEED to do as root. Sudo also has the benefit of keeping track of what users used it to do what tasks, making it easier to trace the path an attack came from.

Gogo0 also mentioned an added benefit to this scheme so I'm not going to repeat it here.

If I remember correctly, that same FTP hosted a ton of other OS ISOs. I distinctly remember getting a Slackware ISO from that site back in the day, and there are/were others, I'm sure.

To the AC: As someone who works for an ISP (albeit a Canadian one) this is somewhat true. What basically happens is we'll get an email or a phone call from a company/industry association with an IP address and a message saying that they've been distributing copyrighted materials illegally. Without a court order they can't get any information out of us and we don't volunteer it. Basically the response to them is "thanks, we'll take care of it" and then we call the customer and tell them to stop it. The customer lays low for a while and presumably they start up again when the heat is off them. Our TOS forbid the illegal distribution of copyrighted materials but really, we know it happens and as long as you don't get caught we don't care. If it happens often enough, though, you might wind up looking for another ISP. There's no active policing going on and we don't take responsibility for what our customers are doing, but we have terms of service and if we keep hearing that a customer is violating them then their service can be terminated.
