No, he's right, they're just not very good. Better than Windows, though. But the command line does usually work better than both if you know what you're doing.
So your argument is that you don't like FreeBSD because it doesn't run on as many architectures (even though it runs on the ones you listed) and you're not familiar with it? Maybe you should stick with Linux. I'm surprised you even got that far.
I suppose you have links supporting this claim, right? I've been using both for many years (on dozens of high-use machines), and haven't seen anything remotely like that. If it's truly so "pure and simple", then you must have some evidence. I'd appreciate it if you presented it here.
I don't know about ext3, but I've personally seen more than one reiserfs filesystem corrupted by power surges or, in one instance, me powering off a Linux box when it hung during startup. ufs on the other hand has been incredibly reliable for me. Anecdotal evidence only, but it's about the same as was offered in return.
You haven't checked recently then. FreeBSD can run JDK1.5 without any problems, which is the latest version last time I checked. It is a pain to install due to Sun's stupid licensing scheme, but I have Java running just fine on my FreeBSD 5.4-STABLE desktop. It's also quite easy to install the Linux Java binaries if you don't have the patience to install the FreeBSD JDK from source.
Sure, it's still more expensive to buy a PC than a console, but except gaming and media, consoles can't do much. A PC can do whatever you make it do, not just what Sony and Microsoft thinks you should do with it.
And my 3.5 year old PC that can't play Doom 3 or Half-Life 2 worth a shit still does all that other stuff just fine. The only reasons to stay on the upgrade treadmill (or to get on it as often) are playing games or doing high-end multimedia or graphics work. Since I don't do any of the latter, and my consoles were much cheaper than a new PC, it makes sense for me to do my gaming on a console. I can't think of a recent PC game that I want that isn't coming to consoles (and yes, that includes WoW, I don't care about MMORPGs) and I can deal with a port that's only 80-90% good if it will save me the $2000Cdn I priced out for a machine that won't be totally useless in a year.
PC's are a great gaming platform and a lot of innovation happens there, but it just doesn't make sense for the majority of people, only the hardest of the core.
There's good money in picking up garbage, too. Where I live, the starting wage for garbagemen is over $18/h, plus a ton of benefits. It's a tough job to get, though, because as with any gov't job, you usually have to know someone to get in.
You have to tell me where you found an R1 ISO. I've only been able to find the release candidates (which yT sold for some reason rather than waiting until they had a stable release ready). Maybe that's your problem, you're using RC3 or Neo?
An AC pointed out that yellowTab would like to open-source Zeta, and from what I've seen he's correct. They sponsored an Open Source conference a few months ago (in Japan, I think) and I'm fairly sure they've been supporters of the Haiku project (OpenBeOS). The problem is that they've licensed the BeOS source code from Palm and Palm doesn't want that source released. That might be why they want Haiku to succeed. If it does, they can start replacing the Palm-licensed portions of Zeta with Haiku and move on unencumbered. I'm not sure what legal issues that might bring, though.
So you'd prefer to have to break the law to exercise your rights as a consumer? Or do you think it's ridiculous like most people do? I have no problem using DeCSS either, but it sure would be nice to not have to worry about it.
I didn't quite get this from the article, but are they now able to get more energy from the hydrogen they produce than it takes to produce it with this process? Or is it just slightly less of a loss than other methods?
It takes a significant amount of energy to extract hydrogen from water. Guess where most of that energy comes from right now? Unless a better energy source is found here on Earth, we won't be able to turn that water into shuttle fuel for much longer.
Yeah, that was shitty, but like I said, it was a mostly good port that you could keep in your pocket. I found it to be a great way to waste time between classes or on car rides.
Do you really know what "Trolling" means? It's not about saying something you don't agree with, but saying anything with the sole reason of creating confusion.
No, trolling is saying uninformed or stupid shit just to get a reaction out of people. Which is pretty much what you did. And that's fine, the internet would be a boring place without trolls stirring the pot once in a while. But at least admit it.
The only problem here is that there is no real profit in beating up hippies
Indeed. It's something you'd only be able to do as a hobbyist, unless you found a way to open source the hippy-beating process and build a service model around it.
Doom and Doom II ran on the GBA, too. It wasn't as good as the PC version, but really, how can you argue with a 90% great Doom port that you can keep in your pocket?
Wario Ware is the reason I bring my DS with me into the bathroom when I take a shit. I can play it while I poo and when I'm done I'm not in the middle of the level so I can stop playing and wipe my ass.
Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits is a pretty fun DS game, too. Not a reason by itself to buy a DS, but if you've got one it can be a fun way to waste some time. I've heard good things about Bomberman, too.
It is if your code is GPLed, which I don't think is unreasonable to expect from a government-produced app. And if you think it is, GTK is also cross-platform, and it's LGPLed, allowing for the app itself to use any license. There are (many) other problems that get in the way, of course, but this one's covered.
No, this is pretty much a troll. It wasn't while you were criticizing his poorly written, condescending "protest email", but once you decided to spew your venom towards an entire subculture which you apparently know nothing about it really became a troll. That wouldn't be so bad if you'd at least admit it.
Also, when calling people 'retarded', it helps to spell it correctly.

http://www.freshports.org/java/jdk15/ And yet here I found this. I guess they must be liars.
I can run Linux software at native speeds on my FreeBSD machine, so really I don't need a Linux distro for anything.

Mark Morford is boring and pretentious. Even when he makes a good point it manages to get lost in his meandering neo-liberal-yuppy rambling.

Without DRM you do have that choice. DRM just takes away the ability to do those things on your terms, like fair use allows.
And unfortunately if they have to break the hardware DRM to do it, it will be illegal to actually use it.
iPods can play .ogg files? Since when?

Sony has already stated that the target demographic for the PSP is people in their late teens through mid twenties.
That said, I see PSPs demo units every time I walk into an EBGames.

But QT is not free
