  1. Re:Inflation... on Report Claims 95% of Music Downloads Are Illegal · · Score: 1

You're not getting $12 CDs because you're not buying the right CDs, or you're not buying them at the right place. If I walk into the music chain stores, I can usually find the "flavour of the month" available for $12-15, or 2 for $25, or a similar deal. That's how you can tell what the big labels want you to buy and what they're pushing as the "next big thing". At places like Best Buy, CDs in general tend to be $1-3 cheaper than the music stores, so $12 is not unreasonable to expect, depending on what you're into.

I can usually get my CDs for $10 or so, but I primarily buy from the band's merch table.

Archos players don't support the format out of the box (or at least the 605/705 didn't), but the codec was purchasable after the fact. There may be a few more, who knows. Maybe he's still using an MP3-CD player. I personally prefer MP3 because I know it will work pretty much anywhere, but I'd never transcode to get them unless I was starting with a FLAC rip.

I like static compiles, too, but a lot of the libraries used for Linux development are LGPL. That means you can only dynamically link if you want to keep your source locked up, and though I'm an enthusiastic free software supporter, I also realise that a lot of the game dev shops aren't keen on GPL-ing their code (or at least not right away.) So I'd settle for bundling their libraries with their games. That's what /opt is for anyway, right?

I'd like to see those big (and smaller, too) name vendors support the BSDs a bit better, too. I've always preferred to work with FreeBSD vs. Linux, but I've been settling on Linux for the better 3rd party software/driver support. I've got some projects planned for this year that I would prefer to use a BSD for rather than Linux, but I don't see it happening.

  6. Re:OT: How to lay out a CD for Linux, Mac vs Win? on Why Game Developers Should Support OS X and Linux · · Score: 1

On Linux, it depends on your settings. (It does on Windows, too, since Autorun is easy to disable.) By default, KDE will open a dialog asking what to do when you pop in any kind of media (CD, USB drive, etc.) and Gnome will just open the disk with Nautilus. At this point, there will probably be a installer.sh file which will do all the heavy lifting of the install. This is basically how the proprietary software that isn't in the repos I've come across handle their installs. Things would get tricky if you wanted to support every distro under the sun, but nobody in their right mind would do that. Instead, it makes more sense to support Ubuntu and Fedora only, and from there it should ultimately work on just about any major distro with minimal effort, and the smart kids will probably blog about how to do it. Bundle it with all the necessary libraries and have the game start from another shell script which tells the binary to load its libraries instead of the systems (or statically link, if your libraries' licenses permit it) and there should be no major issues, or at least no more than you'd expect on any other platform.

That's how I would do it, anyway.

To make matters worse, these guys know nobody takes them seriously, and it pisses them off that much more, making them even act like even bigger dicks.

It's still not a bad game, but if you're still that scared of it by the time you get through Chapter 4 or so, then you're probably the type of person who was afraid of the muppet monsters.

To be fair though, it was a hassle if the customer had phone service through another provider than Telus, too, since the phone situation was not at all unlike the ISP situation. It regularly took well over a week to resolve any issue that required Telus' assistance, since they only dealt with you through their online ticketing system and they only ever updated tickets once a day. If you didn't get the answer you needed, or they needed more info, there's another day that the customer was without internet. I don't miss that job at all.
