  1. Re:Perfect... on RIAA Recommends Students Drop out of College · · Score: 1

I have a preventative solution, not guaranteed to protect you but there's a good chance and it's simple. STOP ENJOYING MUSIC AND VIDEO. It sounds harsh at first, but really, you've been complaining that the latest XYZ film is predictable crap for years, if you can't live without music then live in the past, you're old CD's are forgotten classics (possibly), enjoy the things you enjoyed in the past. Don't buy new CD's, you're probably unwittingly purchasing music with proprietary software that will spoil your enjoyment of music even more and also risk causing high blood pressure and mood swings..

  2. Re:CDs are physical, downloads are digital on The State of Digital Music in 2006 · · Score: 1

No, there still has to be some physical media somewhere, from the server at the digital music shop to the hard disk drive/flash memory device in your computer/ mp3 player, the only difference is, you're not buying the physical media you need to store the music on since you already own it, or are borrowing it from a family member or friend.

Just another question, what happens when you have a large collection of DRM restricted music files on a shared PC, but changes in your family situation mean the computer with the hard disk drive containing your files will be moving away with a family member (think divorce, or offspring finally moving out to their own homes)? I guess the answer would be the same as if your hard disk drive fails and all data stored on it becomes unrecoverable, which is more likely, or even more likely a need to format the hard disk drive and reinstall windows when some dodgy DRM software renders your computer unuseable, which makes the digital music download seem like a poor investment to me.

So far I have CD's that are 15 years old and still play fine, but my last hard disk drive lasted four years, and in that four years I've had to format the hard disk drive at least three times due to some problem or another that couldn't be rectified easily.

Great, another product that'll effectively go into standby instead of powering down. This is looking great in the face of the looming energy crisis if the british media are to be believed.

  4. What about SACD vc CD? on Why Microsoft Hates Blu-ray · · Score: 1

Who wanted a new audio cd format? I'm pretty sure when SACD was first launched we were all promised even higher quality audio from these machines and soon you wouldn't even be able to purchase a standard CD machine because the SACD system is compatible with CD's. Well, what happened?

I suspect most of the early sales for Blu-ray/HD-DVD will be to people buying their first HDTV and the store will offer all this as a bundle, the HDTV bundled with whatever disc playing equipment that the manufacturer of the TV is able to supply. That or a subscription to an HD satellite tv service..

  5. Re:Who really uses Tivo for radio on RIAA Trying to Copy-Protect Radio · · Score: 1

Well, if you like there's already digital devices available for recording radio here in the UK, especially digital radio. See http://www.thebug.com/ I use mine all of the time to record BBC radio 4, and bits of BBC radio 1 (blue room) and BBC radio 3 (mixing it) bearing in mind I'm often not near a radio when the good stuff is on, that or I'm asleep.

  6. Re:ATV on Digital TV Transmitter Using a VGA card · · Score: 1

430-440MHz in the UK is not so popular for ATV, mostly due to the fact any ATV operation on this band pretty much wipes out all simplex and repeater operation within a few miles of the ATV transmitter (not enough bandwidth for decent separation), although slow scan tv on HF (short wave) seems to be a constant source of semi pornographic images, that and old men sat at desks full of junk metal.

  7. Re:No good for UK digital satellite on Build Your Own DVR · · Score: 1

If you're willing to re-align your dish you can receive some channels FTA from other european broadcasters, however free german TV isn't really worth it. I have a UK freeview based PVR and it's worthwhile, but I still need some kind of long-term DVD based storage solution to replace VHS, with only 40Gb available on the PVR, I can easily fill this thing up within a week and still not get round to watching what I want to watch, mostly because I'm away from home often.
