Not at all. If anything the technology we built is getting pushed into area of hardware and software that I hadn't really imagined it would. They are also pressing hard to expand our current product support for platforms we couldn't previously justify. It's a mixed blessing having an 800 pound gorilla on you back. In this case, the gorilla has a fat wallet and can make things happen that were out of the realm of possibility just a year earlier.
(And yes I don't like what they did with Dantz' Retrospect which I used to use at a previous company with mixed Mac and PCs. I really loved that product.)
++Strong Bias // I work at Avamar, I helped found it in 1999, Avamar was bought by EMC back in November 15, 2006.
see "EMC | Avamar"
Avamar's solution has very low overhead on a Laptop and after the first backup, subsequent backups usually take less than a minute. It also deals nicely with opened files.
If you don't want to buy a multi Terabyte server to run it, it is available as a service from a number of vendors in a rebranded form.
For example from AT&T it's called "AT&T Online Vault"

There are of course other services/products out there, just look.
Hello, I work at a 3 letter company whose name starts with "E", a friend of mine works at another 3 letter company starting with "I" as field service supervisor.
Not a month goes by without seeing a double disk failure in a RAID-5 system from a customer site for either of these companies and that's on SCSI, SAS and Fibre Channel drives.
ATA & SATA drive MTBF values that are given by drive manufactures can be off by as much as a factor of 1000 depending on lot.
Most consumer level drives are listed as "Nonrecoverable Read Errors per Bits Read 1 per 10^14"
a 1TB drive contains 8*10^12 bits. 1/8*10^14/10^12 = 1/8*10^2 = 100/8 = 12.5
So the manufacture says if you read the entire drive 12.5 times you will get 1 Nonrecoverable Read error.
So if you think the manufacture is off by a factor of 100 then every.125 times you read the entire drive you get a non-recoverable read error.
Do you still feel you data is safe?
If you think you own your own body...
How come our government can tell you what you can and can't put in to it? ( drugs, both prescription and non-prescription )
Why do we have the religious right trying to reinstitute controls on abortion? (and getting shockingly close)
How come we have laws on the books says what consenting adults can do with each other?
This guy is the biggest wind bag I've ever heard and I've sat through many a University colloquia. I can't believe Google put this guy on. This guy's picture is next to the definition of pompous.
Oh yeah, Just a second hun, I lost my keys, let me ping them on the net.
Do you put them into the DNS?

Not True. x86 was a crappy intruction set before IBM or Microsoft got there.
Have the entire IT staff sit down with the owner of the company and explain why the owner should fire the moron IT manager.
