If you ask me, we ought to just start leaving these pin art things everywhere.

According to NASA's Mach and Speed of Sound Calculator (bottom of this page):

Your number above corresponds to sea level.

(Yes, I am bored too :p)

Envelope math (rough numbers on purpose):

Equatorial circumference of Earth ~ 25,000 mi
Duration of day = 24 hrs
Duration of "light" ~ 12 hrs

To get peak Sun ("noon") the whole flight time, the plane would have to clip along at:
    25,000 mi / 24 hr ~ 1040 mph

    Dawn to dusk:
    25,000 mi / 36 hr ~ 700 mph

Note: C = 25,000 mi is actually at ~83,000 ft.

Insulation, by definition, works both ways--it helps maintain the temperature difference.

While in the summer it keeps your AC-cooled air isolated from the blazing heat (and vice versa), in the winter it keeps your elec./gas-heated air isolated from the desolate freeze (and vice versa).

Of course, this assumes you want to maintain a temperature different from that outside (as is the case where I live).

  6. Antec's Notebook Cooler on Easy, Cheap, Effective Laptop Cooling? · · Score: 1
I keep my Dell Inspiron 5100 (~2 yrs. old) running 24 hrs/day. I started looking for cooler after a few mornings of waking up to it hot to the touch. A little research turned up the best option as Antec's Notebook Cooler.

It's definitely not as portable as the hot glue pads above, but it does its job well on my desk and keeps the heat away from my legs on the couch.

If you want more info, there's Antec's Website, a quick Google search turned up a good review, and they're all over eBay and Froogle.

  8. My suggestion, AMS VENUS DS-2316CBK on External Hard Drive Enclosures? · · Score: 3, Interesting
After losing a hard drive to a cheap enclosure (heat!) just over a year ago, I spent a little while looking around and found the AMS VENUS DS-2316CBK (the USB/Firewire one).

A few features I was looking for (and found):

    • Solid construction- a lot of metal with some plastic trim for looks (and it looks good)
    • Low temperature- a built-in fan (which is _whisper_ quiet) blowing on the circuit board of the HDD
    • Good engineering- haven't yet had a problem interfacing with my XPPro laptop (in either USB or Firewire); can run multiples through USB hubs or just daisy-chained with Firewire; movable power connector adjusts to fit your drive

If you want more info, I found:

My only complaint, it needs to be pretty exposed (i.e. to open air) to stay _cool_. I recently stuck mine in a cramped spot above a bunch of transformers, so I rigged up a case fan a few inches underneath (12V fan running off 5V to stay quiet) and it's cool to the touch again!

I recall hearing Charles Shults talk about this in depth last month on Coast to Coast AM.

He seemed to think that the cable's resonant frequency would be so low that Earth's weather patterns would not be able to break it.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, as anybody with Streamlink can listen to the show.
