I had been using Apple MACs for quite a long time and a few months ago I suggested to my boss that we replace a few of our client machines with them just as an evaluation. After some persuasion he finally agreed to the idea - mainly due to the fact that our IT manager had been using an Apple MAC for quite some time.
It all was really good to start with. OSX was better than our expectations and my boss was happy with the switchover - I had even been nominated for a promotion at the end of the year. Unfortunately we encountered one problem. One employee lost a whole project due to not being able to right click on the program he was using at the time.
My boss wasn't happy with me at all. I was called into his office and given a stern reprimand. A few days later I was looking for another job from home. A word of advice: don't use Apple MACs as all they seem to do is cause problems.
The Japanese Government is helping OSS development too, and the m17n library funded by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan is probably, IMO the most exciting thing to come out of the whole process.
The m17n library allow you to view and type complex text languages like Indic, Arabic, Hebrew and other languages. While this is possible by using QT3.2+ & GTK2.0+pango, this restricted one to just 2 toolkits and to two heavyweight desktops(XFCE4 is the exception though). The library is also a good compromise between a toolkit dependent solution like pango/QT3.2 and Server based solutions like the doomed Indix and STSF.
The screenshots here show firefox and magicpoint, applications that use different toolkits displaying multilinugal texts. I have even seen but not used windowmaker rpms compiled with m17n support.
A very practical example would be something like Damn Small Linux, which is a pretty lightweight live CD in both disk size (~50 MB) and Memory usage (runs on 64 MB RAM). This was ideal for a school near my place that wanted to use it as a teaching resource but wanted it in their native language. I finally am settling for XFCE4 and GTK2 applications like OO.o, Firefox.
The keyboard solutions were too rudimentary, in the case of xkb for phonetic keymaps for indian languages or too buggy and complex, in the case of IIIMF. M17n was a joy to use from day one and rpms for Mandrake 10.1 & debs for Ubuntu/Debian unstable are available.
Worms are a two-sided problem. In order for them to happen, it takes a software writer (far too often that software writer being named "Microsoft"...) to create software that has a ready-to-exploit flaw in it, and then it just takes one evil-minded programmer to kick a worm through that hole and make a mess that makes all of us wearing white hats have to do some serious cleanup and deal with downtimes.
While I'm glad the kid is going to get taken to justice, I'm still a little troubled by the fact that all Microsoft did for their part of it was to release a "you shoulda run Windows Update" patch and kicking in a quarter-million US dollar reward... both of which they're doing out of the kindness of Bill Gates' heart because there's no law requiring either of them.
I know small time programmers need liability protection from the abuse of their software... but shouldn't a large company like Microsoft be liable for the cleanup costs associated with their own security bugs?
It would be interesting to see some statistics as to what people used instead of google during the outage. MSN? Yahoo? Maybe netcraft can confirm it...
