It's all relative. What's more likely to rot your brain, Firefly or Survivor/American Idol/"Reality Show VII - the really crap one"?
Personally I love Firefly, but I think before you say it's really bad tv you should take a look at what the average idiot is watching.
This isn't about the tv show, it's about the movie. And before someone says "oh how clever", there *is* a difference. Plenty of people will see this film and enjoy it without seeing the series, I was with 15 of them tonight when I saw the movie. They won't all decide to see the series after this, so it's the movie that made it for them.
Seen the movie yourself? You should, it's a great reminder that sci-fi doesn't have to be so....Star Wars-y I guess, though I quite like Star Wars and its ilk.
Hmmmmm...I'm almost certain it's NOT being released over Steam.
Didn't they announce a new online distribution app that would let you play DNF "instantly"? Probably by very quickly downloading the first level and then downloading the rest as you played.
I also didn't hear anything about it being made in the Source engine, and I've been following Valve/DNF news for a while.
But please, if I'm in fact wrong then give me the links so I'll know for next time:)
I think the parent's point was that often the people who fight against violent games etc which supposedly make children/adults violent are the same people who say America has lost it's 'good old fashioned Christian values'.
If the Christian God is setting an example to His followers he's awfully violent at times.
Indeed, it's the classic "they promised us flying cars" scenario. People watch Firefly and don't hear any mention of warp drives. Although I love Star Trek, I love the way Firefly shows the future. I'm not sure yet which one I'd prefer...
I think you might be right that a lot of fans (especially here on./) are just geeks jumping the bandwagon, but I'm not so sure about the figures myself. I for one heard a lot of about Firefly and Serenity, and living in the UK and never having seen the show decided "what the hell" and bought the DVD set this May. Now I didn't have any friends who had mentioned the show to me (later turned out I had a couple of classmates who had the DVDs too) and I was ready to be disappointed, but this thing to me was magic. I thought Buffy was ok (going to bad in later seasons), Angel much better and Firefly one of the best TV shows I've ever seen.
It's undoubtedly my favourite "serious" sci-fi show, and while I can understand some people not loving it as much as I do, I pity you. The joy I am feeling right now knowing I will be watching Serenity when it opens here in a week's time is amazing, even if the film isn't that "good" I know I will enjoy it, and in the end I think that's more important than anything else.
Hell yeah, if I ever meet someone who works at Fox I'll be sure to rub this in their faces. I really hope Universal make a mint from this movie, they deserve it for giving Joss the chance he deserved. Fox however have now cancelled two shows I've loved (Firefly and Futurama) and can go to hell, they've shown an utter disrespect for high quality TV that doesn't appeal to the lowest common denomonator.
I've been checking that page every few hours since yesterday morning. Nice to see the score slowly climbing up as the early bad reviews are shadowed by the many good ones:) As I'm in the UK I won't see the movie until it opens here in November so I'm hoping the Yanks give it a great first week a the box office and secure a future for Firefly.
What about selling used cars or selling houses? Should the original manufacturer/builder get a percentage of the sale? Of course not. Of course those License Agreements we accept might have some small print stuff in them...
Over here in the UK GAME and Gamestation stores have been selling used console games for years. My understanding was that used PC Games were much more legally ambiguous/completely illegal which is why GAME doesn't sell them. However, the Gamestation in my city does which would be pretty good except their whole PC range is about 1/12 of their stock.
That's interesting as I can't understand how someone would find tabbed browsing worse than untabbed. But I've been using it and loving it for over a year now, it's a huge part of my browsing experience.
I applaud you though, if everyone loved tabbed browsing nothing new would come along and there'd be no point in crafting the Next Big Thing in browsing.
I'd mod you up if I had points.
I'm getting a little sick of the stuff I've been hearing about Sony and Microsoft being scared of Nintendo's new controller. Just because it might be great and exciting doesn't mean it's some kind of beacon of justice that will strike down the nightmare creatures that run the two console giants. (Chances of this being the general plot of the new Zelda game?). A "friend" who is a huge Nintendo fanboy has been telling me that he's "heard" that Sony are redesigning the PS3 controller and copying the Revolution one. I call BS, if Sony change the design it will be because so many people hated the "boomerang" design when it was unveiled.
Just for the record, I have a gamecube as well as my PS2. I'm looking forward to seeing the Revolution in action but just think this idea that it's "good" and the other two consoles are "bad" is stupid and childish.
On topic: I agree about the "surprise". The fanboy in me says "FFVII remake as launch title" but more likely a big PR stunt with a demo of a hot franchise making its way to the PS3.
I'm not sure what you're trying to say...that switching to IE would be madness or that I am not in fact wise?
Regardless, I never said I was wise. Just great in bed.
You're right of course, and it's a conundrum. If I like IE 7 better than Firefox do I use the browser I find best or the nice open source one in the hopes that it keeps MS keep enhancing and updating their browser, which I won't actually use...
Of course I'll just be a Mozilla fanboy and say this won't matter as Firefox pwns all.
Ack, I meant the size of the downloads. Looks like I tried to be clever and used the wrong terminology.
Anyway, I'll set up the stocks so you guys can start throwing the cream pies and rotten fruit.
Tabbed browsing is IMO the best feature Firefox has for instantly grabbing a user's attention and showing them it has something great in 10 seconds. "You know how your taskbar gets crushed up once you have more than 3 or 4 IE windows open?* Firefox fixes that."- makes people listen.
*XP lets you stack windows from the same app (IE, MSN messenger). However, I'm using XP Pro and have never found out how to enable this feature, if it exists in Pro. Of course with my browser only ever taking up a single slot on the taskbar this is almost a non-issue for me.
IE 7 finally has tabbed browsing, no doubt to try and win back users who have dumped IE for Firefox and the other feature-superior browsers. I'm a big fan of Firefox, I love the small footprint and the fact that the menus etc take up very little screen space so I can see much more of a webpage than with IE. However, I'll be checking out IE 7 and if I like it more I'll switch to it.
As an aside, it's hard to recommend Firefox to some friends/family when they can't comprehend how useful tabbed browsing it. I've successfully converted a few people though and they all comment that they'd hate to surf the web without tabs now. Maybe they should rename them iTabs or something to make them trendy.
Civ II on PSX. It did quite well IIRC, I certainly know a few people who had it. I also like that you insulted the Sony fanboys while implying that all the games on Sony's consoles involve "killing hookers". If you believe that then you're an idiot, or just horribly uneducated.
Once he hit the PS2 he wasn't being developed by his creators, Naughty Dog, though. Go find reviews for the Crash games on this generation. They pretty much stink, and compared to games 1-3 + Crash Team Racing they stink a hell of a lot.
Please watch Firefly. It's nothing like Buffy, by which I mean both are good in their own ways but:
"It's like watching EverQuest, World of Warcraft, and EverQuest II on TV. A bunch of well endowed girls with doll-like figures capable of defeating creatures 10 times their size."
does NOT apply to Firefly.
Baldur's Gate II is still up there as one of my favourite games of all time. The fact that a huge proportion of the quests could be completed more than one way made it great fun to play through the game a second time as a different alignment. Loved telling the white dragon I'd help her and then stealing her eggs to feed to a demon:D

Of course, the game isn't actually out yet and won't be until next year. So no one is "quietly enjoying it" yet :P

Well thanks for letting me know! The date was originally November 5th, I'd assumed it hadn't changed. That's only a week away.....*wets pants*

Pretty sure it's the same here in the UK actually. But then I got a C in English.
