While I understand your opinion (it's nice to at least have something to read while the game installs), I assume you're not someone who buys a lot of games. I mean ~20 a year. My flatmate got close to that last year and the number of game boxes in his room, even those "space-saving" DVD cases, is crazy. I am personally running out of space on my shelves for game boxes and once I buy the game I shelve the box and never think about it again. I bought HL2 through Steam and haven't had a single problem with it, though I know many have unfortunately. Once the industry adopts some sort of standard practice with online distribution I think people will have a lot less problem with the idea. And I can use my shelves for things like books again :D

The name escapes me but the "bad guy" in that book is a little guy with ginger hair who hates everyone else because he's so small. Good read too.

Ever since I read the last chapter of The Science of the Discworld I've been interested in Space Elevators and have watched /. for stories about them. I think the main reason people seem wary of really going for the idea (apart from the large technological research that would be required to make it work) is a feeling of "This is a little too sci-fi for real life", which is understandable considering Arthur C Clark wrote about space elevators in his novels decades ago. But this is a real concept that could make space exploration and travel a very accessible, and perhaps most importantly cheaper. Instead of spending gazzillions of dollars on blasting ships off our planet laden with expensive fuel we can launch them from a "platform" above the atmosphere where the energy required to escape the Earth's orbit is a fraction of that required to do it from the planet's surface, where we must first escape the strong gravity within the atmosphere. Apologies if I've rambled, I just think this is where NASA should be going.

This clearly isn't aimed at the kid who "wants something cool to play with", it's for people who know that this really is something cool to play with/work with/develop for. I have a friend who is really into the previous console and I believe has one of these pre-ordered, he makes them sound very cool and useful. However, personally I'd probably rather have a PSP. "Now they could be really slimey and just update the FMV sequences, since we all know the fanboys would gobble that right up." I'm a big fan of FFVII, but if they did that and I knew anyone who bought the remake having already bought the original I would be disgusted. I know the FFVI port for the PSX added FMV and little (nothing?) else, but that's a port and not a remake. If they *ported* FFVII to the PS3 and redid the FMVs that might be acceptable as long as they charged a significantly lower price than for a new FF game. Also, FFXII is IIRC using monster models from the online FFXI. Seems like a bit of a cop out but when it's so damn expensive to make game content these days I can't blame them.

What about all those people that bought and raved about Mario 64 DS? They added some mini games and I think some more stars to collect, I'm sure SE would add some similar stuff to any FFVII remake. Oh, and the Twin Snakes remake of Metal Gear Solid on the Gamecube is apparently very good, AFAIK they added a few things like giving Snake the moves he gained for MGS2. £50 for a remake of FFVII? Nah probably not. I'd find it somewhere at a decent price, or pay £50 for a collector's edition or the game with some other item with it. £30/35 though, definetely. FFVII is a very good game, whether it's "the best" or even "the best of the series" isn't much of an issue to me. When you're comparing great with great in a market so full of boring crap there's little need to argue in my opinion. While this sole game wouldn't make me buy a PS3 (no single game would), this show of support for Sony's console by SE would help my decision a lot.

I see the OS as even more important, it's the piece of software I use most often and after two years of using XP I can say I am satisfied with the product. Why people think that even if they are against piracy it's a-ok to use a copied version of Windows I have no idea, sure it's more expensive than a game but it's like arguing that all the parts of a car should cost the same. Some are more important and have bigger development times/costs, and so cost more for us the consumer to buy.
