Argh- I would gladly walk most days. As I said, I would rather have the extra 45 minutes a day with my family that driving gives me. Aside from that- I live in Ohio- It gets in the 90s in the summer, and I wear a suit to work most days, so walking can be sweaty work. Those of you who wear suits know you wear them a couple three times before getting them dry cleaned- walking would mean getting them cleaned more often. And dry cleaning isn't great for the enviro. And it would be more expensive than gas. In the winter, well, I don't mind the cold so much, but it is a 2 lane road in each direction, with a sunken median in the middle, and culverts on both sides. For you city folks, a culvert is a drainage ditch that runs alongside the road. Getting splashed with dirty slush is not my idea of a pleasant walk... If I could walk two miles on the sidewalk , I would likely change my mind... I'll just turn my heat down a little in the winter (I have nat gas heat) and we'll call it even. I don't usually feel the need to justify why I drive to work, or shower twice a day etc.... but since you commented politely...:)
Arrrgh- I guess I was tranferring my frustration to you- I get beat up about my truck all the time by people driving minivans. I guess I saw something in your post that wasn't there, after being coloured by my own conclusions. I have given up justifying all my behaviour to others- When someone bitched about my truck in the summer, I would tell them to look under the bumper and see the Boss plow mount. People don't get mad about work trucks. I don't apologize because I shower twice a day, I don't apologize that I wash my clothes every time I wear them.... I flush the toilet everytime anything is in it. (None of the "if its yellow, let it mellow, if it's brown, flush it down...").
I keep my house at 68 in the winter. I am not going to apologize for that either.
Exactly... Around here (Ohio) the job market is so bad, for both degreed and non degreed workers, that people seem happy just to keep their jobs, raise or not. Sometimes it seems that employers create an atmosphere where everyone thinks that they are an inch from unemployment, so they don't have to give raises...
Yes- I have a small penis because I plow snow as a second job, and as such have a 4 wheel drive truck! And plumbers and electricians have small penises because they need big vans and trucks to carry what they need to work! And landscapers have small penises because they need to carry equipment and pull trailers, so they have trucks!
You sir, have a better alarm clock than I do- walking would mean getting up half an hour earlier, and possibly death as there are no sidewalks and it is a 45 MPH road, and this time of year, it is dark at commuting time. I walk sometimes. Plus, walking would mean an hour less a day with my family- I won't give up an hour a day with my fam to save a couple gallons of gas a week.... You are however welcome to give me shit, since you actually walk... I get crap from someone at work because I drive a truck and don't walk, yet she drives almost 35 miles each way to work...
Please indulge me and let me be an ass: Minivans are about as bad as many SUVs as far as MPG- why they get a free pass, I'll never know.
Please- climb off your high horse- No one else needs a large vehicle, but you can justify yours... I am not trying to be a dick, but many who have big vehicles think they need one, but no one else does.... Many people with SUVs have kids...

Arggh- Jesus, I am sick of the "Fuel Efficient" car thing. We need to get away from the whole "I get 200 mpg so I am better than you" thing. It needs to be about total personal energy consumption. I drive a Ford F350 (I plow snow in the winter as a second job, but thats another story- get your fuel efficient car into the lot at your job when it has snowed 2 feet over night and it hasn't plowed... then tell me to get something more fuel efficient). I get about 12-15 mpg around town. But guess what? I live 2 (two) miles from my job!!! So at 15 miles per gallon, round trip my commute totals 10 miles a week, or 2/3 of a gallon used per week commuting! (Yes I know starting the vehicle takes a lot of gas, but I am going for a simplified argument) Someone who gets 40 miles per gallon, but commutes 40 miles each way to work, drives 400 miles commuting per week, and uses 10 gallons of gas commuting per week. So this asshole, using 10 gallons a week commuting, while I use 2/3 of a gallon, gets an incentive, because he drives a little "woman repellant?" All the while using more gas than I do?
What if I buy a Prius, but run my ac at full blast in my big old house in the summer, and have the heat at 85 all winter in my big old house, and commute 80 miles to work each way, and when I change the oil in my Prius, I let the old oil run right into the river, and when I don't want my Prius anymore, I throw the batteries in a landfill. Do I get an incentive then?
The MPG is the only indicataor of your green-ness argument is a simple argument for simple minds, and doesn't belong on Slashdot.
How about these actors who drive a Prius and preach, and then get in a private jet and air condition a 30,000 sq foot house that 2 people live in?
I'm sure I'm not the only one tired of paying $45 a month just for cable internet.
I envy you my brother, paying $45 for cable internet. My cable internet is also about $45, but you can't get it without cable TV... So my cable bill, for TV I rarely watch and internet is around $99 a month.... If they would unbundle the cable tv and net, I would get rid of the TV and keep the net.
(My other option is DSL, but I dont have a home phone- just a cell, which equals no telemarketers, plus, most of the people I call are in Cleveland, about 40 miles away, which is long distance, so the cell is much cheaper... So to get DSL, plus the required home phone, would be about $60 a month. At least for the extra money with the cable package, I get to watch Walker Texas Ranger occasionally)
Reminds me of the hooker- "the sex is free, but the talk will cost you..."
Living in a largely rural area of Ohio, I am not surprised that a rural area in oregon is leading the way. Outside if the the cities, there are many fewer layers of beurocracy- and as such, decision can be made more quickly. There is less political bickering, which leads to quicker decisions. Just my two cents. (Sorry for the spelling- it is 40 degrees here, and my heat isn't on yet, so my fingers are stiff...)
You should have invested in a missile defense system like we did here in the US. I imagine the missle defense will be useful to keep the migratory birds out of the continental US.
You make a better point than I my friend. The thing that makes me so mad though, is that in so many groups of young people, success (Academic) is considered not cool. It is cooler to listen to fitty cents and say "ain't" even though your parents both have graduate degrees and you live in the suburbs, than it is to get good grades/be good at science/be good at drama or art etc etc etc.
Arrgh- Intelligent design has a place, in my opinion, as a mention. In my high school, we studied hard science and evolution, but the teacher said "some people believe such and such" and spoke for 5 minutes about The Blind Watchmaker. Then it was right back to science. Whatever your opinion of intelligent design or creationism, it deserves a mention because so many people believe it- Why? Because even if you are mentioning ID or creationism just to disprove it, kids need to learn about what others think. Sort of like, in a democracy class, you would teach a bit about other forms of government, even if only to strengthen the case for democracy. Teaching a little about ID, in my opinion, will teach kids to find their own answers, teach them how people thought for thousands of years before science. Sort of like, "here in this automotive engineering class, I am going to mention that there is a large segement of the population who believes in human pawered rickshaws, you can read more about that on your own time, now on to our fuel injection unit...." Does that make any sense, or should I not post on Saturday night after having a few drinks?
You are coorect my friend. "several US states?" Keep in mind Germany would fit in Texas twice, area wise. America is a big place with diverse ideas- and besides, anywhere you visit you are likely to come away with an impression of fanaticism. Why? Fanatics, by their nature, are the loudest and most visible.
When I have traveled to Europe, I could easily have come away with an impression that Europeans were crazy fanatics- Why? Because upon hearing that i was an American, the 2 fanatics out of a crowd of hundreds immediately desended upon me. It would be easy to remember only the fanatics, and forget the many other normal people I met. Also, take France for example. While in Paris, I got a lot of shit. Out in the countryside, people were extremly kind to me. (Many in Paris were also nice to me- But it is hard to tell in touristy places, because locals, whether in Paris or Branson MO. tend to dislike tourists, while of course liking their money...)
Arrghhh- The thing is, most of the kids I knew in high school who were good at science and math and applied themselves now have comfortable lifestyles and attractive wives/families... (Sorry to burst the bubble on the whole slashdotters live in the parents basement and never get laid- woman like smart men, and I imagine most of us on slashdot have gf's or wives...)
The kids who wore baggy pants and beat up the nerds tend to have jobs where their names are embroidered on the breast of their shirts... if they have jobs.
In all seriousness, I have always thought it would be a good idea to have people come back to high schools and give presentations on their lives and careers, while a high school year book photo is displayed behind them. Show the nerdy guy from high school, show his attractive wife and nice house. Then show the "cool" kid from high school, and have him talk about his crappy life....
Hmmm- a lot of small town "journalists" who work for small newspapers work only part time, a few hours a week. They have other full time jobs. I believe that the way to explain the shield law, is that it will protect corporate journalists. Even many small free alternative papers are owned by big corporations now.... If you are an independent journalist, i.e. blogger, you have no rights. If you want rights, go work for a big company like GE (NBC) etc.... This scares the shit out of me- abridging our freedom of speech scares the shit out of me, sorry for the language.
Shoot- the problem is figuring out what I paid for mine, as far a getting a refund. I got my v710 "free" under the new every two plan w/ verizon. Although I didn't actually pay for the phone, I am paying for it by being locked into my contract......
Gun crime went down steadily in the 8 years before they banned firearms. (Not just guns, rifles are banned too) In the couple years after the ban, they reached the point of being the murder capital of the US... States with concealed carry tend to be the states with the lowest crime rates. Would you try and mug someone in Texas?
Okay- I am sure I will get modded flamebait or offtopic by a mod who doesn't agree with me, but here goes-
I think this is similar to gun "control" laws- two of the places with the biggest restrictions on guns have the highest crime rates- California and Wash. D.C.
Passes crazy laws against video games is reactive- not proactive. There are a million ways to lower california's crime rate- banning video games isn't one of them.
This is just more of the left wing nannie state bullshit. The gov't needs to stay out of our business.
Uh- Bad naming. Seriously, how many people are going to do a search and leave out the M due to a typo. Search for Sybian. Seriously. It is a sex machine... Don't they test these names?
Thank goodness 99% of the Americans I know are fantastic people and don't live up to this stereotype.
I am assuming that the majority of Americans you know are not from internet message boards....:)
Not to be an ass- But on a board that is viewed and commented on by people from many countries, one should not throw around the term "illegal" with out a very clear explanation of what law is being violated. Something can't be illegal if there is no law against it. For example, it is illegal to drive 100mph. That statement is true here in Ohio in the US, but may not be true in certain European countries.
Speech that is legal here, would be illegal in China. I have a belt buckle with a swastika on it- my grandfather took it off a dead Nazi during WWII. I could sell it here legally, but in France, it would be illegal to sell...
It is easy to throw around terms like "illegal."
Of course the US isn't going to invade Europe. The US gets along with all the countries in Europe well, even France. (And not to be an ass- but no one "invades" France- they just take it with no shots fired...)
Brits and Americans wouldn't shoot each other. (I am talking about soldiers, not the lefties who claim they would kill so and so, even though they have never fired a gun...)
Europe having a say in the Internet doesn't scare me at all- Coutries like Iran and China and the African dictators having a say scares the shit out of me. Keep in mind the UN has despots who torture citizens on its human rights board....
Has no one mentioned this- I have about 10K songs on my itunes, but only about 400 that I bought from iTunes. The rest are from CDs that I loaded in. I like the iTunes interface because it is a great way to make mixes on CD with new stuff and old stuff from my CDs.
