  1. Warn about email scams. on Safe Computing For the Elderly? · · Score: 1

No matter what kind of system you get her, don't forget to warn her about email scams.
It took me a long time to convince my parents that there is no child in Indonesia getting the money they DID send, that there is no one trying to escape to the United States needing their money and always check for the validity of charities asking for help.
Also, the identity thefts... well, you get the point. LOL

My dad is an educated man. He has a pharmacological degree and that took many years of college and he still fell for some of those scams. Even after my "lectures" I still worry that he may end up doing something stupid and losing his entire retirement or something.

I'm certain you've already thought of this... but if anyone has any ideas how to knock some sense into someone who is from "Father knows best" ... anyway, I guess that becomes a whole other topic....
    Sorry

What you are speaking of is opinion. Opinion is mostly protected by the freedom of speech, but not always. Especially when it comes to defamation...
"Opinion is a defense recognized in nearly every jurisdiction. If the person makes a statement of opinion rather than a statement of fact, defamation claims usually cannot be brought because opinions are inherently not falsifiable. Some jurisdictions have eliminated the distinction between fact and opinion, and allow any statements suggesting a factual basis to support a defamation claim."

It is also possible to write opinions about Public Figures, in which case the public figure in question must prove actual malice, which is quite difficult.

    And Yeah...
You are right, do NOT try it with non-public figures!!! ;)

Still, it would be an awesome experience...

to blindly go where one has not gone before... to experience such a dramatic and exciting story, not from the point where you are saying, "There is no way in hell Darth Vader is Luke's father" to knowing it all along because of following the story line.. (And ya know, I thought I was the only one who hated Jar Jar)

I will admit, the cynic in me says that a lot of this was BS cuz he knew a lot of star wars fans would be reading it, but at least some of it could (and probably is real).

I enjoyed the article.. and I especially enjoyed the thought of seeing it beginning to end without ever seeing a single one before...

Perhaps that will be how my grandchildren will experience it (okay, so my son is 6 but.. hey, someday there may be grandchildren!!)

Yes. I've always hated the "Because I said so" response.

It always does seem to work so much better to explain things, instead of just doing so (especially if it turns into do as I say, not as I do, type situations).

I've been laughed at for explaining to my 6 year old son why he should or should not do something. I've done it since he was born (yes, I know that babies don't "understand" but I've started from the beginning and I will continue to do so, prally until the day I die).

Ya know, my boy is a LOT more responsible and a LOT better behaved than many other kids his age. I'm quite proud of him and I'd like to think that it is because I have always taken the time to explain the "why's".

Good points. Sadly, I'm one of those weird ones who has never gotten my nails done and shopping can give me a headache... *veg* And I LOVE football!! *giggle* I guess I've been a tomboy most of my life and I suppose that helps...

I've always got along better with guys. They are easier to understand sometimes. But then, I grew up in a school that really WAS cliquish and it was ugly.. in fact, some of my teachers later said that my class was the worst they had ever seen.

But I appreciate you clarifying your words. I hadn't taken them as you saying that what I did was wrong, but I did want to explain myself a little further. It's a big world and there are so many different types of personalities and situations.. I just wanted to share a little more of my own personal experiences...

And as for the guys realizing.. I suspect that an education just by knowing me is enough.. I don't drill things down their throats cuz that has poor results. *grin* It is always better to learn from the experience than to be lectured or pounded on with a sledge hammer (although that HAS been tempting a few times) :)

In my defense, I don't wear mini-skirts, I wear jeans and t-shirt, and I come RIGHT out and say "If anything I say makes you uncomfortable, tell me and I'll stop." I've had a few speak to me, and I behaved myself around them.

I don't talk sultry and sexy, I make smart ass comments and make people smile. I am able to judge comfort levels.

The most impropriatary aspect about me, that I've noticed, is my habit to touch someone on the back when I am speaking to them over a computer (they sitting in front of the computer, me behind them).

And some of my best friends are gay!! (but I know what you meant by that).

Yeah. I have a dirty mind. Yeah, I speak openly, but I expect the same in return and I've never had a guy run screaming from me, although I will say I have had lots of wives and girlfriends glare at me from afar at functions and such. (That's why I always try to bring my son.. another story anyway)

It's who I am and I wouldn't want to work in an environment where I was not accepted for who I am. I have had a dirty mind since a teen and I've always spoken what I think. So, silly stuff sometimes comes across wrong and I comment on it. That's no reason to be frightened of me. Mostly people like how I think. (well, below the management level anyway)

My "sexual harassment" comment is generally made to break the ice.
naughty words are not naughty around me and I cuss at my computer A LOT! That's another big thing around IT. Guys hate to have to watch their language...

Just some thoughts in my denfense...
