The one problem holding desktop Linux over most of the last twenty years is that a bunch of idiots have simply failed to grasp that Gnome is just not a good enough desktop environment, particularly from a development point-of-view. It was, and still is, a mess along with all the faffing around with Mono that was supposed to solve all that. The politics surrounding that nonsense, and ironically this includes people exactly like Schaller, is where most of the wasted energy has gone.
Where Unix desktops like CDE were used before they have long since moved to Linux. Those developing server software for Linux as a platform many will be on a Linux desktop of some description, and this will have accounted for some of the increase in usage and interest, but a Linux desktop to replace Windows, the Mac or even Android? Nope.
Bitcoin is supposed to be money and the basis of a payment system.......but people measure it in the fiat currency they want it to replace and the frenzy over its price and exchange means it can never be the basis of a stable payments system. Weird.
Qt is an infinitely better toolkit - always was, still is. For some reason those in the Linux desktop world have never got with the programme that says you need good development tools for a desktop. If you've been around long enough this has been rinsed and repeated endlessly for the past twenty years or so. But, it's Linux Mint, so no one will care.
Alas, you need to make all that activity sustainable and profitable to have any future. Musk has burned through absolutely eye watering and unprecedented amounts of cash, but that's about it. His exceptionally creative accountancy doesn't inspire confidence either.
The jump from VHS to DVDs was noticeable and needed. The jump from DVDs to 720p is certainly the next big noticeable jump. Beyond that, even to 1080p, I can't see a big difference and certainly nothing that will warrant me forking out for equipment and content.
I'm afraid your argument, whatever it is, makes absolutely no sense. The F-35 has been in constant development for a quarter of a century and there is no sign whatsoever that it will ever be fully combat ready in any way shape or form. Certainly not in a way that meets its requirements. We're now into territory where you're looking at it being cancelled if some serious progress is not shown within a very short period of time.
Lockheed has desperately tried to get it combat ready with a list of caveats as long as your arm because the programme would otherwise be in serious jeopardy of getting cancelled. There are always software updates on the horizon so that the plane can complete this mission or that mission, at some point in the future. The planes are constantly flown with a whole load of capabilities turned off or severely restricted. But hey, it's flying so things must be fine!
I'll be astonished if Mazda have created a HCCI engine, commercialise it and make it reliable. Petrol is simply too volatile a fuel to control this with.
The only sad part is, if everyone here used all the energy they have to hate on SystemD, to actually fix those bugs, we wouldn't be having these discussions about how buggy it is.
Anyone who has tried has had issues waved away as someone else's problem. This also does not resolve the maintainer or responsibility, a notion which is just downright hilarious.
That is certainly *something*, but mainly because he's been forced into it. He just can't bring himself to fix things properly. It's always someone else's problem or he'll just shove it into the documentation and point to that.
Indeed so. You can never trust what kind of input you will get into your software. You need to sanitise and verify it, especially in an open source system. To wave that away as someone else's problem is absolutely hilarious, until you realise they're serious, but Poettering has ample amounts of form on that score.
On the contrary, a huge amount of innovation and development has happened with Linux because everyone knows where they stand. Take a look at the 'open source' competitors to Linux. They are nowhere to be seen.
FFS, we really have brought out the fuckwits today. Mind you, I'm not on Slashdot much these days so it could be a regular occurrence. 'Whinge'. Google is your friend.

You just know humans are never going to pay attention to that kind of rule.
Asking for a friend.

It never ends.

That's the problem. They don't seem to realise this.
They had Motorola. Did fuck all with it.
That's pretty much all there is to it. Ditto Android. All roads lead to WebOS.
I can't see any difference between 1440p and 4k, unless I look closely at monitor output on a computer.

I get the feeling the crusade against Kodi has come about because many don't like the competition.
Yep. Live your life, get on with it. Thankfully, most people, male or female, are doing just that.
I'll be astonished if Mazda have created a HCCI engine, commercialise it and make it reliable. Petrol is simply too volatile a fuel to control this with.
Yep. That's the response you usually get.
The project is structured in such a way as to making forking an impossibility.

sysvinit did need replaced and improved at some point, but what we've got is going to be a fucking nightmare to live with in comparison.

Why, so you can take other people's hard work like Grsecurity and force them to release their code publicly....
Errrrr, they've taken an entire fucking kernel that they didn't write to peddle their snakoil.
