This morning, while driving to work, I had my shades on, and looked at the sky and said "Wow, that's a big moon", until I realized that was the sun.
No, I'm not making this up. It really happened. This morning. Blame it on too much caffeine, too little sleep and not seeing the sun in more than 2 weeks
The Linux job was for a marketing person who would guide their strategy to respond to the competitor, Linux.
This job is for a support engineer for Hotmail.
Stop trying to read anything further into this. No, they are not porting Office applications to FreeBSD. No, they are not coming up with a Linux distro of their own. Just the simple fact that they'd require 100s of people, not just 1, should be a clue. Also, maybe actually reading the job descriptions might tip you off. *sigh*
You forgot to add: ...and the US government is colluding with the United Nations to rob Americans of their lives and liberty. We should all hoard guns and live in log cabins in Montana so we can defeat them when they come after us.

I don't mind losing a random planet here or there. I mean that whole Mars thing - if it went away people would no longer be scared of Martians coming in and doing nasty stuff.
We have to maintain focus and keep our priorities right while doing this. We only keep the stuff that's really important to us and reevaluate everything else.

However, all of number theory relies on the fact that 1 is not prime. The Fundamental Theory of Arithmetic (that every number has a unique prime factorization) would fall flat on its face if you could stick in as many 1's as you wanted.
That would be fun to do. We should get together and vote to declare 1 a prime number. Then all Arithmetic will fall flat on its face. While we are at it we should redo all Mathematics too
We should be careful, though, not to mess it up too much because we need all the basic algebra that keeps the moon from flying away or the Earth from crashing into the Sun in place.
But just think about all the cool stuff we could do. We could make Nuclear weapons impossible and if we did it well, reverse the Greenhouse effect, etc.

An independent board should carefully control all changes made to the API. Benefits and consequences should be weighed and voted on before any change is published.
How is that supposed to help anyone if a bunch of suits is supposed to "approve" any changes? Jeez, it would be a nightmare to work in that kind of environment and the result would be a crappy product. (unless you believe that crippling a product so other products can compete helps). Remember that the intent is to allow and ensure better competing products not worse existing products
The gaming companies are not concerned with what the software religion of their customers is. They are concerned with what sells.
So if they sold 153,893 windows versions and 53,000 people turned in their coupons for the linux version they are more likely to conclude that they sold 153,893 windows versions and that 50,000 of those people were willing to download the linux version for free.
The only real way for a gaming company to discern interest is if they sell a windows-only and a linux-only version and then compare the two. Needless to say, this is also an excellent way for them to screw people who have both kinds, thus forcing them to pay for both versions or choose between them.
Old rule of usenet arguments: If you get down to comparing your opponent to Hitler or the Nazis, it means you're run out of stuff to say and have lost the argument.
The comment from Gore that the Whitehouse would be involved in any settlement arguments came in the context of him being asked if he would do anything to change anti-trust law or abolish the case. He was essentially hedging on the subject (Translation: He thinks MS is guilty but didn't want to say it).
It's the Republicans who are pro-Microsoft. Gore is quite definitely against it.
Right. My worry is simply with the fact that it is "_very_ rare" for an appeals court to disagree with a FoF and it doesn't pertain necessarily to this case.
Normally when you get to the appeallate level, you are arguing law, not facts
So a single judge can effectively determine what the "facts" are and most appeals courts will refuse to disagree with him on the issue?
Is the FoF really unappealable? What's the legal precedent for this? Is it common for judges to issue "FoF"s and thereby effectively thwart any attempts to appeal.
I hate to sound paranoid but I can foresee a scenario where a corrupt or biased judge issues a FoF completely lopsided. Does this really present as high a barrier to challenge as most articles on the subject would have me believe?
Judge Jackson seems to think that if you give something away which you have spent money developing, essentially to compete with a competitors product which they are making money off of, that's anti-competitive. I can point you to the specific line in the FoF which states this.
So since Sun is developing a product, investing money in it and giving it away for free to hurt Microsoft Office (just like IE with Netscape) does that become anti-competitive?
That is the part that worries me. So a district judge can release a "Finding of Facts" and it becomes fact, essentially undisputable? Stop to think that what if this judge was, for whatever reason, totally biased towards Microsoft and had issued a FoF which said "Microsoft is not a monopoly and did not indulge in negative practices". Would we have so many people cheering the fact that that cannot be contested?
I am honestly quite worried about a justice system which seems to place so much power in the hands of a single judge - at a lower-level court too.
So what am I missing? Someone please point out some flaw in the argument I made so I can rest easier.
That post wasn't directed at you, SoftwareJanitor. It was directed at a bunch of posts I saw. Regardless of the subject of the conversation or my personal position on it, when I see random epithets strewn about, I think "stupid person -> ignore".
You're in the wrong forum. The majority of readers on Slashdot are so blinded by their opinions they are incapable of balanced thought. The other posts in response to yours bear out my point.
Ok, I've heard several references to "fat Microsoft shareholders". I hold Microsoft stock and am not fat. Also, the reference is used in a derogatory manner. Are you implying that being "fat" means you are evil or less of a human being or something? I've also heard several references to "this can only be done by monopolistic resources". Things can be done by resources - whether or not those are obtained through monopolies is immaterial. Are most of you people so blinded by your hatred that you will fling any epithet that comes to mind randomly in a sentence to make a point? Ditto with Judge Jackson's "Finding of Facts". While I don't argue any of the "facts", the language he used suggests a person as un-opinionated and unbaised as Ken Starr
Are you serious?! You obviously have no idea how it is to have to scramble over the mess of stuff on your nightstand to reach for your glasses just so you can see what time it is, or to have your glasses fog up while you're performing a sporting activity, or to have them slip off your nose when you get all sweaty at a dance club or.. bleh, nevermind. I'm going to get Laser Surgery done as soon as I collect the money, my prescription stabilizes and I am reasonably convinced there are no seriously negative long-term consequences.
Unlike DCOM, Corba was developed using input from many companies. Therefore it is simply better
I differ. CORBA was developed by a ton of companies who each wanted their "very important features" to be in there. It is therefore an unnecessarily bulky and complicated standard. DCOM has the advantage of being developed by one company and didn't have that problem. Of course, CORBA has the advantage of working with multiple vendors, but it is certainly not better because it was developed by many companies.
