  1. Re:There is no such thing as the neanderthal ape m on Neanderthal Genome to be Sequenced · · Score: 1

There is no mention of neanderthals in the bible. Well in Genesis 6:4, this statement is made "There were giants in the earth in those days". sounds like it could be reference to neanderthals. Also some Deuteronomy 2:20 "A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead" Hmmm

Have you any idea how really really small humans are compared to the solar system or the galaxy? What your really advocating is that we should just stay in our cold dank cave because we wouldn't want to distrub anything. I personally feel it is our destiny to expand beyond this womb we call earth. By all accounts self-aware self-directed life is rare and unique in the universe and has some purpose we cannot even imagine at our present state of knowledge and evelutionary development.

  10. variable scope issues on How to Do Everything with PHP and MySQL · · Score: 1
It has been a awhile since I have used php but something that bothered me at the time was the enforcing of variable scope. Does php have a similar concept of a Perl "package"? Which creates partitioned name spaces or private variables. Also a couple of other questions:

Can you overload methods or operators to provide custom extended functionality?

Can you inspect a namespace by easily printing out all members and values of a namespace at any point - great debug facility?

Does php have a safe eval mode?

  18. Re:Stupid software patents on Winelib Hobbled by Exception-Handling Patent · · Score: 1

"source code is speech, and hence not patentable." there is a certain truth to that. For example, if I dreamed up a really good arguement or thought experiment to prove or disprove some part of quantum theory, can I patent the idea. No but I can copyright my paper.

Also software is different because it is adaptable and exists to solve problems by combination of a series of statements. Can I buy a big tub of legos and create "inventions" from combining the little plastic blocks in a certain way and apply for a patent.

Also, software is fundamental in creating the emerging information age. It is a target rich environment. Imagine if god on the eight day created the patent office. Could adam and eve spend the next decade running around "inventing" and patenting stuff like sex?
