  1. depends on how you measure improvements on Hard Drive Memory Lane · · Score: 3, Insightful

The capacity of harddrive has steadily improved over the years but the performance of harddrives has improved at an abysmally slow rate. Five years ago I would have not like to see the average desktop harddive at 7200 rpm with some into 10,000. I know better options are available, but those aren't in your average home computer either.

And with that said, the control systems to properly pressurize and disseminate the air would add complexity and energy requirements to the system. More complexity requires more maintenance, which implies more money. This in turn signifies it is not really a viable option.

Just because they had it in Windows NT 3.5/3.51 does not mean they didn't copy the concept then as well. In fact it was no more original for them to introduce it then as it is unoriginal to introduce this today.

With that said, most of the "bashing" towards MS won't be against them for doing this, since it is necessary and so obvious it had to be done it hurts, but rather against how they market these changes and their disregard for others ideas. Ironically, this is why they have the market share they do today too: marketing.

After looking over all the pretty graphs, it seems the 74gb Western Digital Raptor spanks the other drives in everything but platter density. And to push this farther I saw nothing about its reliability published. The 500gb hd isn't using the new platter technology and the 160gb drive is crippled compared to the larger brethren because of its smaller cache. The only thing I got from this review was that if I needed a drive that performs I should buy a Raptor.

It is akin to offering cigarettes to school children for free. You get them hooked early then they pay for the rest of their life (yes I borrowed this from Stallman, and poorly paraphrased too I might add). These guys firmly believe common software should be open source. Especially those wanting to find an opportunity with computers, open source offers them a free way to learn coding methods and such that they may not have access to in their schools. They get free upgrades t their machines if they wish, and do no have to fall behind in the newer software. It is a win-win situation for them.

Whether you believe in open source or not, it is hard to argue it will not benefit those who are receiving these laptops. In the future if they want to use MacOS they can pay for it themselves and leave Linux behind if they feel it will make them more productive or happy.
