Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs http://www.xilinx.com/) are increasingly being used in the classrooms for teaching digital electronics. You can get a good starter board with 500K gates for around 150 bucks and the design software is free from the FPGA vendors.

And it's a sad thing that we'd rather have a big stick to threaten the neighbours with Try being a country without nukes and missiles living next door to several that do have them and also the will to use them. Instead of everyone else fighting it out as to where Tibet belongs to, why not let the Tibetans decide it for themselves? Why cant PRC hold elections in Tibet and let the people decide if they should stay independent or join PRC? Oh yeah.. theres this thing about elections and communists!
Another form of isolation is the restricted mating pools formed by socio-religious groups and cults.
The caste system in India is an extreme example of this. The billion or so Indians fit themselves into nice little isolated breeding groups. I wonder how evolution will/has react to this situation.
