I to had a Cyrix, 2 of em actually. I had an old Cyrix 100 then upgraded to a Cyrix PR200 and NEVER had a single problem with it. And I played games with the thing too, Quake2 ran without a problem. Yes, the FPU isnt so hot but I didnt do anything CPU intensive (well, except for RC5) with it and the price was right. Hell, how much CPU power does it take to do a lil perl or html work as it is. Which reminds me, didnt the Cyrix division get sold off to someone else? As far as I can remember they WERE testing a 1Ghz chip called the Jalapeno at the time it was dropped.
This is absolutely wonderful. I'm glad to see that Cx is doing what others wont. Perhaps a new net extension of.open or.source could be added and provided free of charge too. Hell, they wanna do.shop and many others, so why not one for us? The unsung heres of the *nix community! Might be nice to have a donation driven server which hosts open source and other non-profit sites on a donation basis only... Any takers?
If someones spinal cord was severed, we know the nerves cant be regrown. But if there where these implants which could effectively bridge this nerve gap, its possible to theorize that a person could regain some abilites. But theres the downfalls as well, terrorist acts are possible with such a device. Imagine, someone, say the president, (farfetched I know), gets kidnapped and made unconcious. Instead of ransom or anything one of these devices are implanted. What could be more perfect then making the president do what YOU want to do. Kinda scary aint it?
So it really does exist, damnit. I knew I shouldn't of emailed Saddam asking how to construct biological weapons... Hrmmm, next thing, yall will be telling my Microsoft is a monopoly
Few years back I used to work for GE TechTeam, under a project called Computer Support Plus. We covered extended warranties from varying manufacturoers and stores, and Circuit City was one of em. Just so happened CC used to push PB's hard, so we had ALOT of calls about em. Approx 80% of our buisness was dealing with broken PBs. We hated those computers too, almost anything wrong with it and you needed a new motherboard, because everything was soldered onto it. They also used that combo modem/soundcard , so if one went out either the other one went out right after it, or you had to replace the whole thing anyway. As much as we hated PB, they paid our checks in a sense, because without em we wouldnt of been as busy. BTW, as I tink about it, I got offered a job at Packard Bell about a year ago, very tempting offer, glad I didnt take it.
I didn't want to buy a DVD ROM for my computer, I thought "Hey, I dont wana see movies on my dinky lil 19" Monitor when I can watch em on my 35" TV". But seeing as we are starting to get some real use out of DVD besides just movies, I may have to splurge for one. I think Ill hold out awhile though before I buy my DVD player for the comp. I'd really like the DVD-RAM, but at 500-600$ for it and 20-40$ for each disks its a little out of my range. But kudos to SuSE for starting to make DVD's more useful. I always loved SuSE, now I know why. =]
Well, you do have a valid point, but i forgot to include a few things I suppose. the cpus all together are costing me 225, I have a power-user friend who constantly upgrades "No matter what the cost, I gotta be the best". The motherboards seem to have what I need, 100mhz bus, nothing built in, etc. Im essentially tired of paying 200+ for a motherboard that I really cant upgrade. As with my 225$ Tyan Titan Turbo AT-2.... Max cpu speed of 233 pentium.. Its ok for general use, but I was hoping theres some small manufacturor of boards out there, high quality and inexpensive. Im probably dreaming, but theres always that chance.
Aside from Asus, Abit, Tyan, etc... Im looking to build a low cost (read: CHEAP AS HELL) Linux box. Dual p3-500 or so. I was looking into motherboards made by Matsonic and Pine Technology. Couldnt really find any info about em online, so I was curious if anyone here ever used em. They only run in the 110$ or so, so should I say forget it and get a highquality mobo?
Sure, AOL pulled of amazing success with the same sort of deal, but then to install it all you had to do was D:\install.exe and punch in your credit card info. Although I've never used Corel (r) Linux (r), Im going to assume its similar to many other flavors out there, and isnt as simple to install as D:\gimmelinux.exe, even RedHat requires some tweaking and general knowledge of whats in your PC. The market they are pushing this to, though, is good. Your more likely to get some converts if you push it at the hardware putter-togethers(r). If I had never used Linux, got this Motherboard to build a computer and it came with Linux, Id be thinking to myself "Hrmmm, I've heard an awful lot about this OS, maybe Ill give it a try. Besides, this is a new system, if I dont like it Ill just format and install good ole Windows." But, on the other hand, I feel that you need more then a little taste of linux, and right out of the box it isnt that appealing to the windows clan. I personally installed RedHat 4.0 way back before I had even used any form of Linux, and quickly got rid of it. After I started playing with shell accounts, etc, I really began to love it and made a somewhat slow transistion over. Firs the shells, then a partition on my system for it, then I converted an older box to it, then I built a Dual p2 300 with Linux in mind. So overall, while it really seems like a good idea, sending out all those CD-ROMs propably wont convert near as many people as one might thin; it may even turn them off to the idea. Unless they get introduced gradually, or had access to a fully configured system with all the goodies. Sincerely, Good Ole Judg3!
I know this question has been stated several times, but I want to get more technical and ask specifics. Why not use OpenBSD instead? Right out of the box, its one of the most stable Unices out there. Every line of code is audited before its released. Many a tale of someone installing OpenBSD on a highly vulnerable system and never having one successful crack made, years after. And theres also the bugtraq proof, many times I see "So and so exploit on X linux system" only with a reply, "Oh, OpenBSD solved that problem several months ago". Granted, the hardware support on other BSD platforms as well as all linux platforms is huge compared to BSD. And the Linux SMP support is wonderful. But for just a secure Web Server, email, etc. OpenBSD is the way to go, at least as far as Im concerned. In my mind, leave the Linux to the kiddies, OpenBSD is the only choice for a secure, dedicated server.
Id rather have a dreamcast INSIDE the ball, best of both worlds. Gimme some of that microwave inet access in there too, why not. Oh yeah, add a TV too. Best of all worlds, I could live in that thing. *******
ha! Count me in too, Ive been digging the idea of that lego kit and now I know I need one. Luckily my birthday is in 12 days, I know what to tell the wife to get me. But I hope she doesnt kick my butt, heh, I have more toys then our children now.
Basically it comes down to capitolism. They make XXX amount of money from the people that pay to advertise. THat was all fine and dandy a year ago when there were only a few places out. Now, it seems, EVERYONE is trying to do these banner ads, so they feel threatened by it and attempt to stop this all with a patent. Granted, Im sure it will be re-examined and thrown out, but you do have to look at it from their view. Also, like someone else said, this may lead to a decrease in banner ads on the net. Its possible, though unlikely. Just how do you prove they werent using their strategy/code/etc? Change a few lines in it, add a few bytes here, voila.. New code. Companies do this type of stuff all the time. Beanie babies became HUGEEEEEEEEE, what happened? All of a suddent these little mom&pop shops began making similar products and selling them too. So, while possible, its unlikely that any of this will lead to less ads on the net. Face it, the power of the almighty buck follows the masses, and right now the masses are following the net. Does this make any sense to anyone? I need sleep. Nite. Judg3 *******
We always take the hard way into things. The metric system is a good example, here laid out in front of us was this wonderful system of measurement based on the number 10. Us? Bahhh, screw it, we will just make it more difficult. Then theres that whoel Celsiuis/Fahrenheit thing. I get Celsius, 0 is when water freezes, but Fahrenheit? Whats that? water freezes at 32 degrees ABOVE 0? huh? Oh well, enough ranting. I know I wouldnt be too keen bout switching now as it is, been using the good ole US system for to many years. But that article has a point, it appears out digital signals really ARENT as hardy as the european ones. But it does look like we might be switching, so Ill be looking for that first handheld all in one in my local over-priced CompUSA soon I hope. Well, enough complaining form me. Judg3 *******
Weird how this almost backs up George Orwells "1984". If this really does go through a parallel net will almost definetly ensue, at least IMHO. Websites being whizzed around secretly, as if they are on some type of techno-black market. THe thing that really bothers me is the possibility for National Filters. Think of it this way; A war ensues between the USA and some foreign nation, and we are getting out butts kicked. Thousands of US soldiers dying on the frontlines everyday.
