I live in a suburban area just south of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Following the Great Ice Storm of 1998 (Vermont and northern New York were also affected), my home was without electrical power for 8 and a half days. No lights, no water (electrical pump in well), and no heat (oil-fired furnace in those days). But the copper-wire twisted-pair telephone worked fine almost all of the time. There were several outages of a few hours at a time but otherwise we could call friends and relatives, and 9-1-1 if we had needed to. It was very reassuring despite our other challenges. Today I have a small back-up generator, wood stove, and cell phone, but I doubt I will ever give up my twisted-pair telephone.
That's alright, Mozilla. You make your choice and I make mine. For a long time now, I have blocked ALL 3rd party cookies. Sure there are a handful of sites that I can't use, like my local city's newspaper site, but I don't really need them. I believe that no one should have to accept 3rd party cookies to use a website. If they insist on 3rd party cookies, then I won't use it.
Publishing your research on BBC television? Is that how it works now? Do the comments, questions and rebuttals have to appear on BBC TV also, or can they appear on someone else's TV show?
Not all electronic devices emit EMI. A crystal set (simple type of radio) is an electronic device but it will emit nothing unless a strong external RF signal is already present.
The Ford Motor Company has reprogrammed all recent model Ford cars and light trucks to prevent them from being refueled from Texaco gas pumps. Film at eleven.
Is there any other major country in the world that does not already use the metric (SI) system officially for everything they do? Think of it - all of your major trading partners have to convert their measurements to what is in effect the "american" system before they sell them to you. Maybe they could sell those products to you more cheaply if they didn't have to change all the labels etc before shipping them to the USA.
If they are setting up communications transmitters in a foreign country, shouldn't Google be asking that country's national telecommunications administration which channels are clear to use and which are not? It probably never occurred to Google that every country in the world has its own version of the U.S. FCC, and for the same reasons that the FCC exists, that is to regulate such things as frequency allocations, exact channel assignments, transmitter powers, emission bandwidths, etc etc. Many countries have different regulations than the U.S.
Exactly. To their great credit, the protons have never raised their debt ceiling. So while the universe around them inflates out of control, the protons stay the same and still prosper. (There's a lesson here somewhere but the type on my screen is now so small that I can't read it anymore.)
What the hell does one get out of just reading a book, especially one per day? Learning requires study, analysis, comparison, debate, experimentation, more analysis, more comparison, more debate. I'm not saying it is impossible to learn stuff on your own simply by being exposed to ideas, but a well presented and managed college or university course can accomplish a lot more than simple exposure to an idea. My country (Canada) is badly enough run now by people who think they know everything they need to, but don't.
I see lots of good advice on how to pack things and which things not to pack. But don't forget to allow for the change in polarity as your stuff crosses the equator. Everything will look different where you are going.
Let's see, is that the ethnic origin of my father' father, or of my father's mother, or of my mother's father, or of my mother's mother? Or of all four of them? Or of all eight of their parents? Or maybe it just tells the police what color my skin is?
Hmmm. Dizziness and nausea, eh? I'll bet those affected patients probably live too close to a wind turbine. According to many people (and most of the rural news media) here in eastern Ontario (Canada), dizziness and nausea are "known" side effects of industrial wind turbines. Not to mention other symptoms like sleep disturbance and anxiety. Who needs a placebo to explain their symptoms? Proof by popular opinion! But not in my backyard, they say.
I would suggest that the quality of a first microscope is very important. I have to tell you that my first microscope (at about age 8) was wonderful. It was ordered from the Eaton's catalog (we live in Canada) and it was *very simple* with a single magnification (60x, if I remember) but with very good optics. I and my brother learned so much from that little instrument! A few years later I was given a "better" one with three objective lenses on a turret for 100x-200x-300x magnification and a kit of accessories. Well, the optics were terrible and it was quite frankly a piece of junk. Having cut my teeth on a simple but very good one, I was so disappointed with the new one that I lost interest completely in microscopy. I suspect that lead to my discovery of electronics and a later degree in physics. Never took a course in biology and all I remember today about biology is what I learned as a young lad with that well-made 60x microscope.
Clearly they asked the wrong question. What they should have asked was :
Have you ever, in your entire life, ever, installed on your computer software which
you knew to have been pirated, whether or not you ever actually used said
software in any meaningful way? Ever?
Made a huge difference to RF interference to my ham shack. the number of "birdies" from crap in the home went down to nothing so I could pull in signals that were closer to the noise floor a lot easier.
Sounds like either all the sources of the birdies are in that now-shielded room or all of your ham antennas are in that room.
my country would prosecute me for communicating internationally with someone who lives under a repressive regime
AFAIK, there is no country that prosecutes licensed Amateur Radio Operators for communicating with Amateurs in any other country, regardless of their government. If a government permits the Amateur Radio Service as part of their telecommunications policy at all, then those Amateurs can communicate with any other Amateur anywhere, provided the other Amateur is duly licensed in his or her respective country. (I have been licensed as VE3OAT since 1983.)
Wow! Why are they even talking about this?? Do they want the enemy to discover their method before this new weapon has even been fired in anger? Folks at Tor need to take and pass the OPSEC 100 course again.

No one EXPECTS the DHS.
Our weapons are ... irrational fear and ...

Yeah, a poor analogy on my part.

Aren't we there yet?
And the choice of weapon is .... Polonium 210.
Tried and true. Works every time.

How about .icann?
