You know, the flip side of that arguement is that the patent system is actually protecting the value of the drugs. If more people with AIDS are given the new and more effective drugs, the HIV virus will adapt more quickly, rendering the current drugs less effective.

Granted, that may seem offensive to some people because its basically saying that the value of human life isn't universal. I'm not actually taking this position, just playing devil's advocate here.

Really, AIDS drugs are a poor example because none of them actually cure the disease. (Although some may prevent the transmission to a child by a pregnant woman, that use should be promoted.)

And I definately agree about his background, his real problem was one of lack of exposure. He led a rich life, so he can never understand the problems of the poor (or even middle class). Too bad that he screwed up his health then ended up president.

Yet some people do think that BMI correlates with health, especially low BMI. This also promotes excessive dieting as people try to reach a "healthier" BMI/weight.

The irony is, the group that I know with the lowest BMIs are people that are too lazy to eat regular meals. Its not like they exercise either. They're the kind that have a "surprise" heart attack in their 50s. Oh well. At least they can apparently remember things better.

That isn't true at all. Animals do make conscious decisions that cause harm all the time. Monkeys, for instance, sometimes kill out of anger or revenge. And many species are known to gang-rape females. And throughout the animal kingdom, animals who are stronger often bully or kill those that are weaker. Those are just a few examples off the top of my head.

In the real world, might equals right. I'm not saying I like it, and I'm not saying people can't do better. But really, cats don't set things on fire? No shit! Cats can't start a fire, dumbass.

If you can't realize that hurting people is intrinsically different from hurting animals, something is seriously wrong with you. If you believe someone/something is innocent it is because you empathize with them, not because they wear a halo or have good karma or a "good soul". Innocence is a human label, and it is quite subjective. It is not a material fact.
