What's worse is that this will be justified... Americans just don't care.
What's worse, this isn't even happening and yet a bunch of people are getting hysterical anyway. I would hope most Americans don't care about the conspiracy theories running around in the imagination of certain people. Most likely those throwing out these crazy notions are just wanting attention. Everyone believing them are just unbalanced.

Is SETI Worth It?

I see you don't understand how government funding works. It isn't just private entities that send money to SETI, the US Government has a stake in it as well. That means Bob, Carol, Ted, Alice, AND Suzy all help to pay for SETI just to see if we can find an intergalactic version of Howard Stern.
Yes indeed! How dare game companies give parents the ability to actually keep an eye on their kids! This is the 21st century and we all know kids these days are smarter than their parents!
...which could be said of any and every advance in technology. But we must point it out this time because it is Microsoft and how dare anyone even hint that they might have done something cool!
I'm still waiting for the humor part. Being stupid isn't humor. Being stupid isn't satire. It's sad how often people these days confuse idiotic behavior with humor.
Your fingers slipped... I've corrected your post for you:
"I'll trade the life of some unknown human any day of the week, provided I can imagine it is nothing more than a mass of cells rather than a distinct human being in the early stages of development. Please exploit this unknown, innocent, defenseless life for my own benefit."
...since the only people we want to have using Open Source are people with the time and knowhow to dig through piles of source code? Most Slashdotters don't have that kind of time or knowledge to dig through any given open source project, even one like WordPress. Open source means code review is possible, it doesn't mean it's realistic to the general user. If you want to attract general users, the person putting out the code has to be trusted.
Dell resells PowerDVD, making a profit. Linux though has nothing to resell...
There is a problem here somewhere... Dell buys PowerDVD, resells it, and makes a profit in so doing. Dell uses Open Source products for free, sells them with Dell hardware and... Makes even more profit. If Dell does have to pay licensing fees for certain codecs, those fees could easily be reflected in the price of the computer. I don't know how codecs typically price, but it can't be much. Looking at some links posted above, an individual could purchase most of what they want for about $35. Bulk agreements are usually less. That kind of price increase would not be considered daunting.
Actually, not true. I'm not sure what the breakdown is for which versions can and which can't, but XP Home can't play DVD's out of the box. The versions of Vista I've played with all can play it out of the box, but they all come with Windows Media Center and I imagine the necessary decoder is part of WMC.
"Oh, and it wouldn't hurt to bundle Firefox, Thunderbird, and OpenOffice on those Windows machines you sell either, Mr. Dell."
What's the matter? Can't check a box? Really, it's that simple. Go into the package manager and check the boxes, then hit apply and wait for a bit. Woo! You're done!
Note the bolded section from the original quote. He's asking for a bundle of those items on Windows machine. There is no such package manager that comes with Windows.
I think you are undermining your own point... The subsidies exist because the market is flooded. Agriculture in the US is doing TOO well. We're producing so much food, many farmers are being paid NOT to grow crops. The excess of food means cheaper prices, which means farmers have to sell for really cheap just to be competitive. So cheap that they themselves are making next to nothing and require subsidies in order to pay the bills. Agriculture in America is doing quite well as far as volume of produce, and if we needed them to produce more, the capacity is there, ready and waiting.
Yet another rumor dissing AT&T and the iPhone. I'm just going to wait for this one to prove false like all the others, but I won't hold my breath for Slashdot to post a follow-up story saying, "Hey, that previous blog rumor was wrong! Just like all the others!"
Look at his user history, glance at a few of his other posts, then decide if this is someone being serious or a troll trying to get people mad at Christians.
What if you are a video game distributor or a video game producer and you decide you don't want to be associated with this game? What if you are part of a ratings board and you decide the violence in the game warrants a high rating? Do any of these have the power to say and do the things they say and do? Should the ratings board give the game a lower rating just because of a silly claim that the game is fine art? Should game distributors be forced to sell games they don't want to sell? Should stores be forced to sell games they don't want to sell or games that will make customers exercise a free choice to shop elsewhere?
Nothing in this instance has anything to do with censorship. It's all about organizations and companies making their own decisions in response to this game.
A day is 24 hours... What'd we do for the other 12? That's probably the gap in the last 4 minutes, the time when everyone started spending all their time reading about Britney and Paris while watching Idol and Survivor?
an interface doesn't have to be graphical, that's why it's called a command line interface:P But yes, I was referring more specifically to the gui's made available via KDE, Gnome, Fluxbox, etc etc.
What ads?
Alas, TA is not accurate. The government doesn't do direct funding but there are research projects and such that go to SETI via government grants.

Not that I don't think they do this

There, fixed. You can thank me later.
I always suspected that the guy maintaining the White House webserver was a war criminal...

"Vista SP1 means fresh material to pick on Microsoft for."
Slashdotters ending sentences with prepositions means more material for a grammar Nazi* like me to pounce on and attack.

Smithers is a fake name, used to help Mr. Smith hide. Mr. Smith knows all about you, Neo. The Matrix has you still.
while I can get this same quality news for free elsewhere.
Did you say quality? Slashdot is getting pathetic. Quality need not apply.
Look at his user history, glance at a few of his other posts, then decide if this is someone being serious or a troll trying to get people mad at Christians.
