  1. People Don't Understand the Internet on Will World Cup Streaming Cause Internet Meltdown? · · Score: 1

Its so unlikely at a "single" provider can cause an internet meltdown. However, the STREAMING sites may not be able to handle the client traffic, or companies LAN could fall under the weight, due to employees watching. But a world or national (US) Internet melt down is probably very hard to create, and the FIFA World Cup won't do it.

The colo that is doing the streaming is much more likely to have issues, than the "Internet" as a whole. And I figure there is more than 1 server, in more than 1 colo doing this. Yes, for some, it could be slow, or they can't connect ... but that is just for that site, not the "Internet".

  2. Still Have to Engineer it on Infrastructure for One Million Email Accounts? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I'm not sure that there is any commerical solution that can support 1 million emails well. Hence why Yahoo and Google have built there own custom systems. Some engineering may need to be required.

    For pop3 & imap4rev1, look at:
    http://www.dbmail.org/index.php?page=overview

Still need an MTA, I think qmail is the fastest, best, but I'd used exim, as its easier.

Database - not sure if MySQL and PostgreSQL will scale with dbmail.

I'd say use FreeBSD, because of the ports collection (Don't linux Flame me). However, something like Solaris 10 x86 (or Solaris+Sun Hardware) might provide a bit better scaling, and HA hardware, SAN support, support in general, etc. Though, a bit tougher on the OSS software installs (In My Experience)

  3. Lack of DR/BCP on DirectNIC Crisis Manager Braves the Chaos of New Orleans · · Score: 1

I tried to get a job at this company a few years back. They kind of dropped the ball, with poor communication, and didn't work out. Dispite that, I still have my domains registered their (at the time, they were the cheapest). And my father has put some of his clients on their hosting packages.

After working at SBC, and now at Yahoo, BCP - Business Continuity Plan and DR Disaster Recovery have been driving forces for the companies, especially post 9-11.

My point is, (especially if I would have been there) is that BCP/DR would have been a point I harped on. New Orleans is below sea level, and over the last 5 years, there has been many reports and specials about what would happen if a category 5 hurricane hit New Orleans. At the price of colocation and hosting, its a commodity these days, renting a rack a few hundred miles away, and then failing over to the data center remotely sounds good to me.

Maybe this is financially unfeasible for this small company. But I think anyone in IT right now knows exactly what I'm talking about. Regardless of how big or small your company is, Nerds (and hopefully the business people too) - take notice. Talk about, plan, and be ready to implement your DR/BCP plan.

What would you do if your city, Somecity, USA is evacuated ?

  4. Quality, Cost and Innovation on Piracy Not To Blame In Decline of Moviegoers · · Score: 1

Cost is the major factor for not going. I'd pay $5 to see a bad movie, but not $10.

Quality Movies - If there is a moive I want to see, I see it. Though, I wont see just any random movie anymore, because of cost.

Innovation. Back in High School, (92-96) theaters changed. Stadium Seating, THX and other sound systems were big draws for the youth crowd for the latest James Bond and Star Trek movies. Should movies move from standard definition to High Def just like TV ? Where are the 48 FPS, HD digital movies ?

  5. AT&T and SBC Merger Not Complete on AT&T Plans CNN-style Security Channel · · Score: 2, Informative

For the lastest merger news. I believe is the public site for merger info.

AT&T and SBC Merger is not yet complete, so the companies are suppose to proceed as still two companies.

However, the time frame for this is after the merger SHOULD be complete - End of 05 or early 06. Though, this would seemly play very nicely with SBC IPTV plans for Project Lightspeed. Lightspeed PR

All information in this post is based on public information released by SBC.

  6. Think Tank Formally know as Xerox PARC on Who Will Google Buy Next? · · Score: 1

Xerox PARC was already bought and sold, and not owned by Xerox anymore ... This think tanks seems good fit with Google.

  7. Challenge-Response / Token Passwords on Write Down Your Passwords · · Score: 1

Not a huge fan of RSA or their product SecurID (R), however, there are other brands and what not. With some many dang passwords, I'd be up for a Challenge-Response or Token Passwords a la SecurID ... and just build it into my cell phone. ... add bluetooth, and add RSA/DSA key exchanges (ssh-style, for various uses) ... and one has a really nice password tracker. (I hate paper.)
